Work Text:
Rhett was impressed that Link had stayed up so late. Despite how he portrayed himself as the ultimate creature of habit, Rhett was aware that Link did in fact have an extra gear that he could kick into for weekends and vacations.
So it wasn’t that Rhett had expected Link to head to bed by 9PM on the weekend that they were sharing an Airbnb with their college friends. But he was surprised that he had made it into the AMs.
It was almost 2AM, and everyone else had retired to their beds, leaving Rhett and Link out alone by the firepit.
“We’re outta beer,” Rhett observed.
“Probably for the best,” Link said, squinting as the wind yet again shifted the smoke from the fire pit in his direction. “I’m already gonna be regretting goin’ to bed so late. No reason to give myself something else to regret on top of that.”
Rhett snorted. He didn’t particularly wanna risk inviting a hangover either; or having to deal with a hungover Link.
“I think your compulsive hydration will serve you well,” Rhett grinned.
Link swatted at the smoke like a swarm of mosquitoes.
“That ain’t gonna do nothin’, bo,” Rhett told him.
“I’ve moved to every empty seat around this freakin’ fire pit! It just.. Follows me wherever I go!”
“I can’t say much, having been observed to do the same thing m’self.”
Now Rhett was glad that they’d run out of beers, or inclination to fetch more from the house. He was feeling a little loose lipped. If he kept at it, Link might actually be bothered to notice his subtle flirting.
“Why isn’t it botherin’ you? This is some bull, man!”
“Well then you haven’t tried sittin’ everywhere, have ya?”
“What? You wanna.. Switch seats?”
“Why would I give up my seat if it’s proven to be the only smoke-free zone?”
“What am I supposed to do?” Link smirked. “Sit in your lap?”
“How bad do you want it?”
Link’s eyes went wide. “Want.. What?”
“To get away from the smoke?”
“I..”
Now Rhett’s smirk mirrored Link as an unspoken challenge.
“You.. Think we’re alone out here?” Link asked quietly.
Rhett leaned back in his chair a little, and turned his gaze to the clear night sky and the endless open sky above them.
“Alone out here? Like.. in the universe?”
In the firelight, Rhett could just make out Link rolling his eyes as he stood up and walked around to Rhett’s side of the fire.
“Waiting for an invitation?” Rhett teased.
“Yeah, I’m an awkward vampire, waiting for an invitation to come inside your.. Personal space.”
“There’s no space that I occupy that’s too personal for you to be.. Co-occupying.”
Link shifted nervously.
“Open invitation,” Rhett clarified.
Link sat slowly down onto Rhett’s lap; Rhett’s hands guided his hips into place and Link leaned his back against Rhett’s chest and leaned his head back onto Rhett’s shoulder.
Such a good fit for something that happened so infrequently.. Rhett silently lamented, as he wrapped his arms around Link’s frame, feeling Link’s huge happy sigh - expand.. contract..
“I live for moments like these..” Link said, barely audible.
“When the smoke clears?”
“Smoke, fire.. You think I’d notice now?”
In a matter of minutes Rhett could feel the weight of Link’s body against his deepen, and his breathing changed, suggesting Link had finally lost his battle to fight his nature and allowed himself to sleep.
Rhett would obviously have to wake him, so they could both make their way back to their respective beds.
But not quite yet..
