Kazuki stepped back in the living room to find Anzu sleeping on the floor, leaning at the couch. How was she able to fall asleep so quick? He kneeled beside her on the floor and tried to wake her up. “Hey, go sleep in your room!” He even pinched Anzu in her cheek, but no response. He gave up, covered her with the blanket and sat beside her. He thought about his evening with this weird girl. “I hadn’t that much fun in a long time”, he mumbled to himself.
Everything started when he found her on the rainy playground at his way home. It was the fourth time he run into her and every time she tried to escape quickly from him. That was new and refreshing. Normally girls starred at him, followed him or whispered in his back about him – all this made Kazuki feel very uncomfortable and a panic always creeped up inside of him, if he couldn’t escape those stares. But Anzu didn’t gave him this feeling, not one single moment.
He turned his head towards Anzu, looked at her relaxed sleeping face. Nothing reminded of that girl with fiery temper; how she tackled him, when she thought the bug was beneath the living room table. She would be great in football or rugby, he thought and chuckled. Also how she was bold about her gaming skills and had a disastrous loss at the cardboard game.
Also fiery were her red wavy hair. There aren’t many Japanese with curly hair so he took his time to study how the waves frame her. Than he realized that sleeping with glasses must be uncomfortable, so he reached out to take them away. When he tried to put the glasses away, Anzu grabbed his one hand and hold it tight to her face. “Momohiki, I got you now!”, she mumbled. “What?” Kazuki was trying to get his hand back, but her hold was very tight. He blushed. Seems like his hand was trapped.
He was sitting a while like that beside her, felt the warmth of her face and hands in his hand. Even that this was a little bit weird, he thought about if the two of them could become friends. The only real friend he had and felt comfortable around was Makoto. A second friend couldn’t hurt.
Anzu was moving a little bit and finally he could free his hand from her grip. With his new found freedom he thought about what he should do. Probably it would be best if he carried Anzu to her bed. Or would it be too awkward? On the other hand Anzu created far more awkward situations tonight - tackling him to the ground, tucking her shirt in, grabbing his hand - so he decided to risk it and lifted her up. Feeling her body in his hands, her head fell against his chest, made him blush again. He shook his head and moved towards the stair. While climbing the stairs, he asks himself how to find out which room belonged to Anzu. The answer was simple when he reached the top – one door showed a sign with Anzu’s name. It was a little bit difficult to open the door with his elbow, but when the door finally opened up he found himself in a room full of cat belongs and cat pictures. He was stunned for a second, but realized that it explained Anzu’s cat shirt, cat bento box, cat smartphone cover and also her dad’s cat sweater she handed him earlier.
Kazuki carried Anzu to her bed. He was relieved that she didn’t wake up in his arms, that would have been very embarrassing. He looked down on the sleeping girl and realized that she was snuggled up in the blanket that originally was planned for him. If he didn’t want to sleep without a blanket, there was only one solution… He sighed and picked up Anzu’s folded blanket. It would be awkward to sleep with the blanket she uses every night, but still better than sleeping without any blanket at all. He walked the stairs down and finally got ready for the night on the couch with Anzu’s blanket and a couch pillow. After all the events, he fell asleep soon.
In the morning, an electronic cat sound woke Kazuki up. It took a moment till he realized where he was. He sat up on the couch and reached for Anzu’s smartphone on the table to turn off the alarm. He stretched and thought about that he should go home and get ready for school when it crossed his mind that nothing would wake Anzu up, since her alarm was downstairs with him. He had the urge to facepalm. Did he really have to wake her up? How many awkward interactions can you have in 24 hours?
Upstairs, he knocked at her door. “Anzu, wake up!”
No response.
He knocked again, louder. “Anzu! Wake up! Time for school!”
Again, no response.
He knocked again and with a warning he opened the door, only to find her sleeping like a stone. He groaned. This girl was unbelievable. He walked beside her bed and started shaking her shoulder. “Anzu! Can you please wake up!”
Slowly her eyelids open up and she starred in his face, blinked.
With a jump she tried to stand up, but the sudden energetic movement resulted in knocking her head against his head. Also her feet were tangled in the blanket and she stumbled in Kazukis arms and knocked him over completely, since he already lost his balance. Again both of them laid on the ground, Anzu on top and Kazuki bottom. “You’re one of a kind”, he mumbled while she jumped up again, this time successfully. “I’m so sorry! Ah! So sorry!” Also she jumped some feet away from him with a panicking expression. Slowly Kazuki also stood up. “It’s time to get ready for school. I thought to wake you up, since your alarm was downstairs with me. And you ignored me knocking at the door”, he explained. She asked, still with panic in her voice: “Why did I leave my smartphone downstairs?!” Kazuki was unsure if it was a question for him or if she asked it herself, but he answered anyway. “Cause you felt asleep on the floor beside the couch. I had to carry you upstairs to your bed.” He skipped the part were she hold his hand, because she already seemed embarrassed enough. Anzu’s blushed nearly as red as her hair color and apologized several times.
“Nevermind, but I really gotta go home and get ready for school”, Kazuki replied and headed out of the room. Anzu followed him downstairs.
“Thanks for letting me stay here”, he said while putting his shoes on.
“No worries, I’m sorry for everything!”, Anzu replied.
He opened the door. “See ya.” He walked away and didn’t have a clue that this wouldn’t be his last night at Hoshino’s house.
