Summary:

Part 6 of the Rowvember 2022 series. The Boss watches over her sleeping friend.

Work Text:

Velvet watched as the bedsheets slowly rose and fell on repeat. It was a relaxing sight. The room’s temperature was very comfortable, not too stuffy, not too chilly. She wasn’t tired, and she had nothing to do at the moment. Even her seemingly insatiable hunger was sated, thus there were no souls to snatch.

With nothing else to occupy herself with, the demoness decided to visit her close human friend in the middle of the night. So now she sat there, next to the bed, watching Viola sleep. She didn’t mean to appear creepy, she simply had a curiosity for human habits, and this was just one of them. It calmed her down seeing her friend at rest, the gentle breathing soothed her mind.

The room was pitch black thanks to the high-tech windows the former Morningstar had installed in her home. The photochromic smart glass could turn dark at the push of a button, blocking out Steelport’s busy nightlife and bright downtown. Yet, the Boss could still see perfectly fine.
It was also peacefully quiet in the bedroom, due to the modern sound dampening measures that were used in the building.

This was Velvet’s number one place in the city. Complete darkness and silence, a warm and cozy indoor climate, and with her favorite human to top it all off; qualities the demoness deeply appreciated.

She tilted her head as she watched Viola roll over, sighing in her sleep. Vivi couldn’t help but smile at the sight. She wondered what the other woman could be dreaming about; maybe of a loved one, or perhaps she was working overtime even in her sleep. Regardless of what it was, the Boss was happy as long as it wasn’t another nightmare, one that plagued the black haired woman every once in a while.

It was good being here. Viola had some of the most advanced security systems in the city, yet Vivi preferred to check on her friend personally and make sure she was alright. She liked this place, it felt like a true home to her; something she hadn’t had for a while. It was safe.

“Are you just going to sit there all night again, or will you actually join me tonight?” Viola’s sudden voice snapped Velvet out of her thoughts, breaking the silence.

Caught again.

“Sorry if I woke you, V,” the demoness was embarrassed. She knew it was weird to watch someone sleep.

“You didn’t, I woke up by myself,” she eased her worries, much to the Boss' relief. The last thing she wanted was to disturb her friend during her well deserved rest.

All Viola saw were Velvet’s glowing, amber eyes floating in the darkness. The first time she had woken up to this sight, she got understandably frightened. But at this point, she was very much used to it. The yellow, cat-like eyes hovering over her, watching her, were no longer scary, instead they felt protective and offered comfort.

“Now come here, it’s much more comfortable in the bed than next to it,” she reached out her hand towards the other woman, who accepted the gesture.

Viola scooted over, her bed big enough to easily accommodate two people, and allowed her friend to slide under the sheets alongside her. Despite her shorter size, Velvet wrapped her toned arms around the former Morningstar, acting as the big spoon, and taking in the warmth of the latter’s body. Viola melted into her protector’s hug, welcoming the firm embrace. The sensation of Velvet’s warm breath against her neck felt reassuring, washing away any sorrows or negative emotions that might lurk in the back of her head. Now it was only them. Safe.
