tell me how you danced the snezhnayan waltz.
tell me of your footsteps in the snow,
how it bounced off your boots,
your laughter eclipsing the sun’s glow.
tell me how you loved your sister,
and your little home by the lakeside,
how your parents loved folk songs to death;
their melodies so deep you could hear them across the tides.
tell me about your first kill.
how the hare’s body went limp;
the light in its eyes cracked along with its spine.
did you stare into its bottomless abyss?
did you refuse to dine?
tell me of the boy who lingers by the docks,
whose fingers wrote as much as they tore.
tell me how he grinds his teeth
against his blade, across my skin.
tell me how he wakes,
how he talks,
how he walks me along the shores.
this boy i adore.
when the sunlight hits the floor,
when dawn breaks, our hearts ache,
i shall lay by your core, lips cold as i swore
to love you more than death could take.
