Work Text:
It was a late spring afternoon when Rui and Mizuki were on the rooftop for the last time together in middle school. They knew that they were supposed to be in class. But to be honest, they would much rather be together, enjoying each other's company before summer came around and they wouldn’t see each other.
After all, Rui was going into high school next year, a fact that the pair hadn’t even talked about. And they didn’t really want to, it made them both upset just thinking about it, especially Mizuki.
But now, the coming year was far from the duo’s minds as they sat on the rooftop. Mizuki was resting their head in Rui’s lap, eyes closed as he played with their hair. He smiled as he carefully ran his fingers through their soft hair. All of their worries drifted away as Rui hummed a pleasant tune.
“I have a present for you,” He whispered.
Mizuki opened their eyes eagerly, not trying to hide their excitement. “Really?”
“Yep, sit up.”
Mizuki shuffled up to sit on their knees and Rui dug through his pocket, looking for his surprise for them.
“Bingo!” He said as he took out something that Mizuki couldn’t see.
“What is it?” They asked.
Rui playfully giggled. “Give me your hand.”
Mizuki extended their hand and Rui carefully placed the object in their palm. They looked down and saw a beautiful magenta colored hair ribbon. Mizuki stared at the ribbon, taken aback by Rui’s small kindness.
“You didn’t have to-”
“I know,” Rui turned pink, “But I wanted to. I noticed your hair was getting long enough to tie back now and I thought you might want some cute accessories to go with it.”
“It’s beautiful, thank you.” Mizuki said quietly, left flustered by Rui’s attention to that little detail. They reached up to touch their hair, “Is it really that long now?”
Rui nodded, “Here, turn around.”
Mizuki grinned as they happily turned around. Rui gently started gathering their hair in his hands. They felt a gentle tug of their hair as Rui tied it back with the ribbon.
“One more thing, turn around again.”
Mizuki complied and when they moved, they saw Rui beaming.
“How do I look?” They asked.
Rui pondered their question for a few seconds before reaching up to brush some of Mizuki’s hair out of their eyes, tucking it behind their ear. “You look lovely, Mizuki.”
Mizuki flushed again, “Thank you Rui. Again, you really didn’t have to.”
The two sat there quietly for a while until Rui muttered something under his breath.
“What was that?”
“Can I kiss you, Mizuki?” He asked, slightly louder.
Mizuki’s heart skipped a beat, stunned by his request, “yeah,” They whispered.
Rui shifted to lean in towards Mizuki. He moved to kiss them, but instead ended up awkwardly bumping his lips into Mizuki’s.
“Crap, I’m sorry.” He apologized.
Mizuki laughed, “It’s okay, let’s try that again.”
Rui gently took their hands in his and leaned in once again. The kiss worked this time and their lips molded to each other. Mizuki counted the time in their head, and after seven seconds, they both pulled away. The two stared into each other’s eyes, smiling goofily. Mizuki beamed and gave Rui’s hands a gentle squeeze. Rui leaned down to give Mizuki one last kiss on their forehead.
They stayed there for a while, holding hands and smiling at each other and just being together on the rooftop. Rui was Mizuki’s, even if it was for just a little bit.
