Work Text:
Kuroo has finally got his driver's license and makes it well known to everyone.
It is all Kenma has heard about from him for the past five days and he swears the next time Kuroo mentions it, he is gonna smack him. Although there is a part of him that is proud, he thought that Kuroo was gonna be licenseless forever speaking from the fact he failed the test at least two times (that he knows of). Every day though, Kuroo has shown up at Kenmas house just to take him somewhere. So it's no surprise when he receives a text.

Text from Tetsurou: Kenma
Tetsurou: I'm in your driveway
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The buzz of Kenma’s phone interrupts the game he's playing. After some annoyed grumbling, he taps on it to see who the message was from. As Kenma read he peeked through his window curtains to where he could see Kuroo sitting in his driveway in his black truck bobbing his head to a song that was way too loud. This is the sixth time this week.
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kozume: I am aware
Tetsurou: Let's go for a drive
—-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Damn it, Kenma huffs as he grabs a plain black hoodie and grabs his torn shoes (that definitely need to be retired). He glances out the window again, where he is met with Kuroo looking back this time. Kuroo nods his head and flashes his stupid smirk. He flips him off as he throws the hoodie over his head and slips his shoes on. Grabbing his switch and he headed out of his room and to the front door.
“Mom, I'm heading out with Kuroo,” he shouts toward the kitchen where his mother is.
“Alright hun, be back before dark!”
He nods as he opens the front door and walks to the truck in his driveway that's playing the bass-boosted music that he swears you could hear from a mile away. He opens up the passenger door and hops in as Kuroo turns the music down ever so slightly.
“Where are we going this time?” Kenma asks as he turns the music down himself, knowing good and well Kuroo wasn't going to.
“You’ll see Kozume,” with a slight smile as he pulls out of the driveway.
“You know, you could at least give a warning. At least five minutes to prepare me to deal with your bullshit.”
“Ah but where's the fun in that and it's not bullshit, you know you love hanging out with me,” Kuroo says and eyes Kenma with that stupid smirk again.
Kenma glares at him, even though he knows he's right. He would never fully admit that though, he didn't need Kuroo’s ego to grow three times in size. He would never live that down.
“You and I have different views on fun. My idea of fun is playing video games in my room without being bothered, your idea of fun is bothering me with your loud ass music in my driveway.” Kenma started hoping to wipe that smirk off his face, however, it just grew larger.
“Avoiding my statement I see.”
“Oh whatever Kuro,” he says, looking away from Kuroo to peer out the open window, covering his slight smile with his hand.
And just like that, the conversation is over and Kuroo turns up the radio that's connected to his phone, playing an English pop song, one of Kuroo’s favorites. The wind flows through the windows and blows Kenma’s hair back as he watches the buildings pass by. The feeling is somewhat calming, even though Kenma knows that if it were anyone else he would hate this but because it's Kuroo, it feels perfect.
He listens to the soft hum of Kuroo quietly singing along to the song. Kenma glances over and Kuroo is slightly bobbing his head to the tune with the sun coming through the window and shining an orange hue on his side profile.
It's kind of beautiful, Kenma thinks. He looks beautiful.
He quickly turns his head back to the buildings passing by, humming along with Kuroo. He takes this calming moment to take it all in, the wind blowing through his hair, the surge of buildings passing by, the soft humming from Kuroo, and the somewhat comforting glow from the late-night summer sun. God, it can't get much better than this.
After some time passes, Kuroo turns down the music and slightly turns his head towards Kenma.
“You know,” he says “I remember when we were little, we talked about having a moment like this.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, where I just pick you up once I got my license and we could go anywhere we wanted. Just me and you.”
Kenma now remembered. It was when they were in middle school and Kuroo was complaining about how he couldn't just come over whenever he wanted. In middle school, a common problem is that all you want to do is hang out with your friends all day long every day, but you have to be able to have someone take you because you were not “mature” enough. This was the problem for them, so Kuroo would talk about how when he got his license they would hang out every day.
“It will be amazing Kenma, we could be with each other all summer long. We wouldn't have to worry about anyone else. It would just be you, me, and my super awesome truck,” he beamed.
“I would rather be caught dead than be seen in a truck,” Kenma deadpanned, ignoring everything else that the boy had just said.
“Well my truck is gonna be amazing, you just wait and see. Plus I think you will be just as happy as me when I get my license, no matter the kind of car.”
“Hm, I guess we’ll have to wait and see then.”
“Yeah, I remember that. I'm glad it finally happened. Little Kuro would have had a riot if he didn't get his amazing black truck,” Kenma said as he glanced toward Kuroo, with a slight smile.
“I'm glad it happened too because I got to prove that I was right all along. I knew you didn't care about what car it is cause you just wanna spend time with me.”
“I don't know Kuro, I think I still would rather be dead than be noticed in this damn truck.”
“And yet you are still here.” Kuroo retorted with that damn smirk.
Kenma didn’t reply to that, he just turned his head toward the sun that was setting and let comfortable silence fall over them.
“We’re here”
Kenma glanced around. They were parked near a surfboard rental building and in front of them, there was a nearly empty beach.
“The beach?” Kenma said unenthusiastically.
"Yes, the beach Kenma,” Kuroo speaks as he stops the engine, opens the door, and hops out of the car.
Kenma exits the car while Kuroo grabs a blanket from the back seat. Kenma leans his head against the car door while Kuroo opens up the bed of the truck. It's getting darker as Kuroo arranges the blanket in the back of the car.
“Ok, all set up” Kuroo huffs as he puts his hand on his hips. Kenma walks to the back of the truck and flops back on the blanket.
“What's this all for Kuro?”
“Stargazing obviously. I know you love stargazing and I looked it up prior and google said tonight is the best night for it.” Kuroo rolls his eyes and flops right next to Kenma. He is a little too close for Kenma’s comfort.
Kenma lays there for a moment just processing the words his friend had said.
”Well, that makes sense but I wasn't referring to that. I meant, like, all week we've hung out, and as much as I don't mind it, what's it about?”
Kenma looks over to Kuroo, who looks like he's trying to come up with something in response.
“Well, I am just very happy about getting my license,” he pauses, “there also is something I've been trying to tell you.”
“Oh, well what is it?”
“I like you and I have for a while. I don't want to mess up our friendship and all of that shit, so I have been holding off but I feel like it was finally time to let you know.” Kuroo said this, probably thinking he sounded cool and collected, but Kenma could tell that he was nervous.
Kenma stares at Kuroo who is just staring at the stars, examining them with an expression that says he has thousands of thoughts running through his head.
“You like me? Like really like me?”
“Yes, if it hasn't been obvious enough already.” “You have not been obvious. I've liked you for so long and I could never tell if you felt the same,” Kenma smiles and breathes out “But even if that is the case it's nice to hear you say it out loud.”
Kuroo finally looks over to Kenma and smiles.
"You’re so handsome, you know.”
Kenma moves closer to Kuroo and then asks “Can I kiss you?”
“I thought you would never ask,” Kuroo says with that stupid smirk on his face.
