Safe space

Summary:

Wyynde struggles to open up to Kaldur about his haunting past.

Work Text:

Kaldur could tell Wyynde hated the surface world. He always told him it the fact he had to actually put effort into breathing and other “activities” but Kaldur felt like it went deeper then that. Wyynde would shudder if he heard yelling, or would avoid going near churches. So Kaldur booked an appointment with Black Canary, and kinda forgot to tell Wyynde.

”Where are we going Kaldur? Wyynde asked slipping his hand into his boyfriend’s.

”Just going to see someone so we can talk” Kaldur replied walking faster. He knew Wyynde would not react well to that.

”So your sending us both to a therapist?” Wyynde responded, releasing his hand from Kaldur’s and crossing his arms. Kaldur could tell by his frown he was questioning if he was going to turn back around and go home.

There was a long groan before he stated “Fine let us make this quick then!”

They walked down to the end of the hall and Kaldur knocked. The door was wandered in about half a second after Kaldur stopped knocking.

Black Canary stood at the side of the door as they walked in. Her blonde hair flipped around almost hitting Wyynde in the face.

”What is it that brings you here Wyynde?” Black Canary asked, staring intensely like she usually did.

“I actually don’t know, her how about we ask my boyfriend?” Wyynde said passing on the intense state to Kaldur.

Kaldur took a deep breath trying to analyze what he would say to Wyynde could make or break the foundation of a relationship.

”Why do you not like the surface world?”

Wyynde opened his mouth but shut it before any words could come out.

“It is ok, you don’t need to know anything, I don’t want to put more stress on you then I already do.”

”You can tell me anything” Kaldur said grabbing Wyynde’s hand and stroking it.

”Ok but brace yourself, this story is quite fast paced.”

“My earliest memory was going to church that my local community held every day. I remember my dad would never attend and my mother who was a religious woman would always scold him and the conversation would usually end with my mon telling me to go to hell. My dad hated anything related to the church but tried to hide it. He also hated the surface world. He said evil people with beaked hoods would punish him. My mom also hated the surface world because it was sinful and unholy place. People would kidnap children and take them from their families so she wanted to make our rightful land our holy space. My childhood was a blur all I can remember is church and asking my father questions which he would never answer he would just stare. I had a sister who was three years older than me who I was really close with. She and I were inseparable. I never properly went to school until my mom decided to send me to military school al of a sudden. I was shocked since my mom was against boarding schools but she wanted me to have a use in life and needed money. My father was unwell and nobody knew what was wrong so he got fired from his job. I remember getting mad at him. He would start speaking in a weird language, one which no one could understand. He would speak and call out these words and write down shapes and symbols which no one could read.I eventually got made and ran away from home three months before my departure to military school. I made my way to Posidenos and I am starting to blank”

“That’s it?” Black Canary asked raising and eyebrow.

”No it is not” Wyynde snapped back “I just need a breather.”

Wyynde inhaled deeply making sure he was sucking in all the tears that were starting to form.

“I went to military school which made a rift between my mother and my father but not my sister. She sent me letters weekly telling me about home. After my graduation from military school I headed home before starting the second part of military school which I knew would take three years. I had stop receiving letters from my sister for a month but I put some trust in the process. When I got home I was met with tears and sorrow from my neighbour. I went around asking what happened but no one told me. I ran up to my mom and begged to ask her what happened. She looked away and I remember the words that came out of her mouth.”

”She didn’t make it, she gave in”

“I couldn’t believe it. My sister had been happy and content as she had been took her own life. It threw me out proportion and by the time my vacation was up I was thinking in the same distorted ways as my parents. When I went back to school I began taking the Purist moment seriously, even accusing people who looked like Kaldur in my mind that they killed my sister, that they were the reason that everything in my life was wrong. I took it out on some people and I regret doing that to this day.”

Kaldur grabbed Wyynde’s hand as he took a break for a second to process all that he had done.

”We don’t have to go into detail if you don’t want, Wyynde” Kaldur said placing kiss on his hand. “Trust me, it is painful for both sides.”

Wyynde took a deep breath, opening his eyes to smile at his partner.

“After the Purist movement was debunked half way through the year, I started having thoughts questioning life, my mothers faith, and my sexuality. I had a teacher who was also a mental heath advocate. Under his advice for my remaining five months at the school I kept on journaling. My topics changed into the answers of my questions. I also became good friends with my professors, as they saw a brightness in my future. Sadly, after I graduated I returned back home to find my whole city was in shatters. Half the city I had once called home was suffering from crime, suicide, and oppression. My father had gotten a lot more ill than the time before, staring lifeless at a wall for 12 hours a day and my mom was more paranoid than I had ever seen. I was scared about how controlling she was, going through my things everyday once I returned home from work, constantly questioning to check for sins, and constantly checking my room. I, a 18 year old man had become terrified of my mother and even father to some extent. I went along with it though, tolerating the things my parents said and did, fearing that if I leaves them I would die full of sin and go straight to hell.”

“I mean do you guys think he’ll is that bad, cause I really don’t fully still unde-“

“Wyynde” Kaldur said sternly looking at Wyynde.

”Sorry, let me get back on track” He said closing his eyes to think “Where were we? Oh yes,”

“After a year of living with my mom life got worse. Half the population of the city had at least attempted suicide once and everyone was at least thinking about it. My mom discovered my scattered pages of writing finding out my thoughts. She thankfully had only discovered the ones about my thoughts about other men and not the things I wa a writing about her. She took my pen and paper away and told me I could stay but to prepare of a world of hurt. That is what it was a world of hurt. I was forced to drop from my job, cut all contact with anyone who was female except my mom. I thought it was working and that there was hope for me and myself but I ended up falling in love with some guy, I don’t even remember who he was but he was new in town, he looked at me once and all my fears went away. I ended up falling fast and my mom caught me yet again acting upon my sexuality. Things turned violent and I packed my pen and notebook and I left. I left my home, my town, and my past. I felt ashamed for so long, still kinda do when I tell this story.”

Kaldur grabbed Wyynde’s hand to look him in the eye.

“You have nothing to be ashamed of, remember what I first said after the first time  you kissed me?” Kaldur asked cuddling him more.

”Well you didn’t say anything, you walked away so fast that I almost forgot you existed.” Wyynde said rolling his eyes to the back of his head. “But what what did you say after?”.

”I told you,” Kaldur said letting go of Wyynde “I was scared, scared of my reputation on the surface, scared of people’s thoughts and scared of myself. You told me that the more you acknowledge the fear within you, the more you learn to love you”.

”Why is this relevant now?” Wyynde asked crossing his arms.

”Cause I can tell your afraid of reliving the past,” Kaldur said inching closer. “And I understand the fear within you, but you came here today and told me how you hade to make your own path to be the wonderful man you are today. You are true to yourself and not ever shy of that. You may have not always been that confident but what matters is that you are now.”

”And?” Wyynde asked leaning in closer to Kaldur than he was before.

”That’s why I fell in love with you,” Kaldur said. “I think that speaks for itself.”.

Kaldur leaned in kissing Wyynde softly on the lips causing a Wyynde to kiss back. Neither wanted to let go realizing truly how amazing it was to fall in love not so accidentally.

“Ahem” Black Canary cleared her voice smiling at the two. “Before I have to relive the things you and Raquel did back in 2011, let me just add a few notes.”.

”Oh shoot, forgot you were here still.” Wyynde said looking strangely at her.

”Welcome to therapy,” she snapped back. “First off, thanks for the story telling and second, are you of Native American heritage?”.

”I am part Gwi’ch’in and Haida, from Yukon.” Wyynde stated after thinking for a bit.

”Wait, your technically Canadian?” Kaldur asked with a shocked face. “Maybe that is why you say sorry so funny!”.

”I only found out six weeks ago after a DNA test,” Wyynde clapped back. “Didn’t think it was that relevant to the relationship.”

“My point is,” Black Canary interrupted. “Your parents may have been victims of the residential school system and you could qualify for group therapy for descendants and/of survivors of residential schools.”

”I’ll look into to it.” Wyynde said without hesitating “Now let’s head home, I want dinner.”.

”What kind?” Kaldur asked winking at his partner.

”Everything…” Wyynde said staring at his boyfriend whilst putting on Kaldur’s jacket. “But you know what I mean.”.

”Goodnight Canary,” Kaldur said holding Wyynde’s hand.

”Night” Black Canary said sighing.

Kaldur and Wyynde walked out the door, attached to the hip looking at maybe the next step to their relationship.

Black Canary smiled so hard after they left hand in hand. She had always rooted to see Kaldur happy whether it was through achievements or anything else, she wanted to make sure he got the most love he could ever.

”I never thought I’d say this out loud, but I kind of ship them!”.
