Work Text:
You can have a friend get their heart broke
Terra's death hit Beast Boy the hardest.
And you can be there when they need it the most, but
He saw the shattered heart he'd hurled across the room through the remainder of his tears.
You won't be the one falling off the deep end
A few stray tears rolled down his cheeks still.
You can have a friend lose somebody close
He opened his door and left his room for the first time in weeks.
And you can be there when they need it the most, but
Robin looked up when he walked in the room and greeted him.
You won't be the one having trouble sleeping
The four were in the kitchen, three of them were eating dinner, Cyborg was finishing up some tofu for Beast Boy.
Somebody loses their somebody every day
Raven used her magic to pull out a chair for him, silently inviting him to join them.
But you'll never really know what it's like
"We missed you grass stain. How're you holding up?" Cyborg asked softly
'Til you wake up to some real bad news
Beast Boy shrugged, sliding into the offered chair.
You'll never really know how it feels
"What happened to your hand? And can we bandage it?" Robin questioned
'Til it happens to you
Beast Boy looked at his hand. He'd forgotten he'd sliced it.
No, you'll never really know what it's like
"Can we-" he stopped, unsure. "Can we stay in here...together? It feels nice," He looked down.
Even if you think you do
"Of course we can,"
You'll never really know how it feels
He and Cyborg settled on the couch for video games, Raven and Robin to read, while Starfire played with Silkie.
'Til it happens to you
They stayed that way until Beast Boy started falling asleep, and the rest followed not long after.
You can say you're sorry a million times
Raven shook him awake, and he realized he'd been crying in his sleep.
But even if you try, try to sympathize
She silently handed him a hot cup of tea.
You won't be the one picking up the pieces
He thanked her quietly.
You can do your best, call 'em every night
"You can always talk to us, any of us, and we'll listen"
Listen to 'em say, say they're alright
He just looked into his tea and didn't respond.
But you know there's a chance they don't really mean it
He sipped on the herbal tea, appreciating its warmth.
Somebody loses their somebody every day
Raven went back to her book she was reading by candlelight, in order to not wake them up.
But you'll never really know what it's like
"What're you doing awake Raven?"
'Til you wake up to some real bad news
"I woke up. ... I was dreaming of when Terra tried to drown me in mud, I remember the panicky feeling of being unable to breathe and it haunts me."
You'll never really know how it feels
"I didn't know, I'm sorry."
'Til it happens to you
"We all dream about her still, Beast Boy,"
No, you'll never really know what it's like
"I still have nightmares from when Slade put the nanotechnology in you guys,"
Even if you think you do
"Its normal to experience flashbacks after something traumatic, especially when it just happened," Robin explained
You'll never really know how it feels
"Sometimes I have the dreams of when the future was all wrong," Starfire had woken
'Til it happens to you
"Just because we're superheroes, and some of us aren't human, doesn't mean we can't be hurt, mentally, I have dreams about the accident that made me into a part robot, even after all this time,"
You
"I dream of telling her goodbye, and our first date, when I found out she betrayed us,"
'Til it happens to you
Beast Boy smiled for the first time in weeks, feeling better knowing he wasn't alone.
You'll never really know what it's like
"We should watch a movie, we're all already awake,"
'Til you wake up to some real bad news
"Oh goody! Should we watch one of the fear or the funny or the romance or-"
You'll never really know how it feels
A comedy was slid into the DVD player.
'Til it happens to you
About halfway through the movie, Beast Boy started nodding off to the laugh track.
No, you'll never really know what it's like
The volume was turned down slightly.
Even if you think you do
"Thanks guys..." Beast Boy trailed off, succumbing to sleep.
You'll never really know how it feels
They were all asleep by the end of the movie, except Raven.
'Til it happens to you
Their gentle snores filled the room as the end credits played.
'Til it happens to you
She turned the volume down and turned the TV off.
Somebody loses their somebody
She smiled slightly, looking at her friends, asleep.
'Til it happens to you
Then Raven, too, slept.
Somebody loses their somebody every day
They were still hurting, but they'd figure it out together this time.
Somebody loses their somebody
Outside, the sun began to rise.
