Work Text:

She speaks and is more a divinity than a human being but with the tone tinged with a something that only mortality can give.

She speaks and Cale listens, a little because she does and a little because it's important. It's something about a wish, his? But he doesn't remember ever wishing for anything of that sort before. There's something very familiar about the way she talks that brings it hanging over him in a way he doesn't like but can't get rid of.

Cale never liked gods, being Kim Rok Soo he never believed in them, not after spending so much time begging for help that never came. Now he believes in them, not out of devotion but because they have proven to him that they do indeed exist... and they are just as miserable as he remembered them.

Though he listens, it's been a while since he's understood the words that come out of her mouth, distant and far away like an old childhood dream that's ashes in the faded corners of his memory of acquiring Instant. His eyes feel heavy, his lungs compress before an invisible force that prevents them from expanding at ease, he feels a weight on his shoulders trying to drag him to the ground. He doesn't move, he doesn't respond, he can't.

And she smiles, pleased, before saying one last sentence. He can't hear her voice at all. He understands every last syllable of what she says.

You're safe now.

When he wakes up, in the middle of the dust and wreckage of an abandoned building, feeling something sliding down his forehead, with pain coursing through him to the farthest corner of his body, he feels the tears finally appear after an eternity locked away.
