Chapter 1: prologue

Chapter Text

"Leafpool I love you." Ashfur said awkwardly as he shuffled his paws.
Leafpool could hardly believe what the handsome gray tom just told her. She never thought that she would be in this situation again. She never thought that she would love another cat. Especially after her affair with Crowfeather and how that ended up affecting her. Yet here she is.
Leafpool is the thunderclan medicine cat and she has broken the code once or twice already. She is a great medicine cat, almost as skilled as the legendary Spottedleaf. But the issue is that she fell in love with a cat from another clan while being a medicine cat at the same time.
It is against the warrior code for a medicine cat to fall in love. Leafpool finds that rule stupid and she doesn't understand it. Nobody can control love. But apparently, it came from the first ever medicine cat Mothflight who realized the struggles of parenthood would merge with the struggles of being a medicine cat. Although Leafpool secretly just thinks that Mothflight must have been a bad mom.
However, Leafpool's first love was a tom named Crowfeather. He has handsome dark-gray fur and glittering blue eyes. At first, he was kind of mean and he had a temper. But once he started to get close to Leafpool he softened a little bit.
The brown and white she-cat tried to control her feelings for Crowfeather since she knew that loving him would put her in a lot of trouble. Maybe more trouble than it was worth. But no matter what Leafpool did she couldn't push away her feelings. She tried her best yet they still remained.
In the end, Crowfeather returned Leafpool's feelings and he begged Leafpool to go and run away with him. Leafpool was hesitant to do that at first because she didn't want to leave her kin and friends behind. But in the end that is exactly what Leafpool did. She left thunderclan and ran off to be with Crowfeather.
They were on their own for a few days and Leafpool and Crowfeather were happy. But then Midnight the badger came to them and told them that badgers were attacking the thunderclan camp.
They ran back to help and Cinderpelt, the current thunderclan medicine cat, was killed. Leafpool then broke up with Crowfeather and had to remain as the thunderclan medicine so thunderclan wouldn't be without one.
Their breakup was very messy, to say the least. Crowfeather was pissed and he told Leafpool that he was never going to love her again and that she is now meaningless in his mind.
It took Leafpool a lot to recover but she wasn't the only cat in the clan recovering from a break-up. Another cat named Ashfur was as well.
Ashfur used to date Leafpool's sister named Squirrelflight but they broke up on good terms when Squirrelflight realized that her true love is Brambleclaw.
Since Ashfur and Leafpool were both depressed they started to bond because of that. Now they both have a crush on each other and it seems they can't hide their feelings.
"Ashfur I love you too... But I'm a medicine cat. We can't be together." Leafpool swore that she said that exact same thing to Crowfeather and it changed nothing.
"So? The medicine cat code is stupid! We just won't tell any cat about our relationship and they won't find anything out. I'm really good at keeping secrets! I won't tell a soul anything." Ashfur promised.
"It's not that I don't believe you Ashfur. I do believe you and I am sure that you won't tell. It's just that one of us could say something and let it accidentally slip. Or somebody could see us. The possibilities are endless." Leafpool pointed out.
"Are you sure that you love me?" Ashfur demanded.
"Of course!" Leafpool said, shocked by that question. "I love you more than anything Ashfur!"
"Yeah right." Ashfur snorted. "If that was true then you would have agreed to be my mate already." Leafpool tried to speak again but Ashfur raised his tail for her to be silent and she closed her mouth. "Maybe you don't want to be with me because your scared of what your sister will think. I am her ex after all."
"No! I love you Ashfur I really do. I don't care what Squirrelflight thinks. I'm just scared that we would get caught." Leafpool said quickly, trying to get her point across.
"If you truly love me then you have to become my mate."
Leafpool sighed. She does love Ashfur and she is sure that her feelings aren't just going to go away. She might as well agree to become his mate.
"Fine I'll be your mate. Just tell nobody." Leafpool pleaded.
Ashfur's tone softened as he spoke and nuzzled his new mate.
"I knew that you would see things my way! Nobody will find out about our relationship and we will always be happy together."
As Leafpool listened to Ashfur she could only hope that he would be right.
~~~timeskip~~~
"Leafpool I do not love you." Ashfur spat as he glared down at his paws.
Leafpool stared at Ashfur, shock gleaming in her amber eyes. She felt her blood go cold as she listened to the grey tom's harsh words.
Ashfur and Leafpool have been dating for moons at this point and their relationship has slowly been decreasing. Like a ball of dirt rolling down a Hill.
Ashfur acted like he loved Leafpool but he really didn't. He only used her and pretended that she was Squirrelflight. Ashfur is also really possessive, Clingy, and straight-up morbid. One time Ashfur got mad and told Leafpool that if she truly loved him then she would hurt herself for him. Which Leafpool of course didn't do.
At this point, Leafpool does kind of want to leave him but there is just one tiny problem. Leafpool is pregnant.
Now there could be a small chance that the father of her kits could be Crowfeather but Leafpool is sure that it's not him. She and Crowfeather never did anything and if she was pregnant with Crowfeather's kits then she would have ended up giving birth already.
She really regrets her choice. Leafpool has no idea what she can do. She knows that Ashfur will be a horrible father and she knows that she can't be a proper mother to these kits because of her role as a medicine cat.
Leafpool brought Ashfur out into the forest so she could talk to him but he suddenly broke up with her. Now Leafpool is even more confused and hurt.
"What do you mean you don't love me?" Leafpool demanded.
"I never did." The way Ashfur spoke brought shivers down Leafpool's spine. He doesn't care about her at all. He doesn't even value her as a cat. In his mind, she was simply a toy. A toy that he got sick of and is now going to throw away. "I got with you because I was bored and wanted to be with Squirrelflight but she left me. I figured being with you would make me feel better. But it didn't and now I'm bored once more. So I'm breaking up with you."
"B-but what about everything you told me? You told me almost every day how much you loved me!"
"Those were just lies I told you to make you get attached to me." Ashfur laughed. "It was really funny to watch you believe every lie I told you. You must have bees for brains. Your useless now and Squirrelflight is ten times hotter than you anyway."
"But what about our-" Leafpool paused. She was going to tell Ashfur about her kits. But she decided against that. He doesn't care about her at all and he's beyond morbid. He doesn't deserve to know about his family.
"Our what Leafpool? Our undying love?" Ashfur scoffed. "The only thing dying in our relationship is me since I'm currently dying of boredom."
"Never mind." Leafpool spat. "You aren't the cat I thought you were. I hope you die in a fire. I never want to see you again."
"Fire..." Ashfur muttered to himself. "How Charming."
Leafpool ignored him and stormed off. She doesn't know what she's going to do but she can think of one cat who can maybe help her and that is Squirrelflight.
Leafpool spotted her sister in the forest searching for prey. She was most likely out on a hunting patrol. But right now prey isn't what matters.
"Squirrelflight we need to talk," Leafpool said urgently. "Do you know a place where we could be alone?"
"The abandoned two-leg place," Squirrelflight said instantly. She didn't even ask Leafpool what they needed to talk about. That is how close the sister's bond is.
The two siblings padded alongside each other silently until they reached their destination.
"I'm pregnant." Leafpool blurted once she was sure that she and Squirrelflight were alone.
Shocked glimmered in Squirrelflight's green eyes and for a few moments, she was speechless. It took her a while to finally get the courage to speak.
"Are you pregnant with Crowfeather's kits?" Squirrelflight asked hesitantly.
Leafpool shook her head. "Not Crowfeather's. Ashfur's."
Squirrelflight was silent and Leafpool couldn't blame her. She did date her ex-mate.
"Ashfur made me think he loved me," Leafpool said, feeling that she needed to explain herself. "He didn't actually love me and he used me just to relieve his boredom and get back at you."
"That mouse-heart!" Squirrelflight spat. "Does he know about the kits?"
"No, and I don't want him to know. I don't know what to do!"
"Don't worry Leafpool. I can help you. Once you give birth I'll pretend the kits are mine." Squirrelflight said, giving her sister an lick.
Leafpool nodded weakly. "Alright..."
Little did they know the pain this choice was going to cause them.
