The clouds brewed ominously in the distance as a gentle breeze swayed the cherry blossom trees. Today was the last day of club activities before graduation so the Fukurodani volleyball club was meeting for the last time to properly say farewell to their third years.
He hadn’t realized how much this would hurt until quite some time after they had first met. That first encounter had been so bright for Akaashi, this dark feeling he felt now hadn’t even crossed his mind. The first time Akaashi saw Bokuto he was playing volleyball, Akaashi was enthralled by Bokuto’s charisma on the court. In Akaashi’s eyes, Bokuto was the sun. He brought warmth to every room he entered and his smile would melt Akaashi’s worries away.
But today, Bokuto’s smile would only increase the ache in Akaashi’s heart, “This is it,” Akaashi thought, “This is the last time i'll see his smile.”
Akaashi was lost in his thoughts the whole night as the team reminisced about their time together. He felt slightly guilty that he wasn’t spending much time with the other third years that would be leaving. In his defense, he wasn't sure his calm composure would stay intact if he had to listen to his teammates remind him of the looming future.
Akaashi managed to avoid most of his teammates for the night and more importantly, Bokuto. He thought about what he’d say to Bokuto a million times in his head, would he confess or would he keep his feelings a secret? He knew this would most likely be his last chance with Bokuto, but his fears of being rejected held him back from vomiting his feelings up in front of Bokuto.
“He shines so brightly, there’s no way he would settle for someone as dull as me,” Akaashi thought. He was brought out of his thoughts when he realized how little people were still in the gym, many had been putting their coats on and walking through the doors, others only lingering around to say their final goodbyes. Akaashi’s eyes trailed around the room till they found a pair of golden eyes looking back at him.
“Shit,” he thought, “It’s now or never.”
Bokuto made his way towards Akaashi and gave him a smile, “I know some of the guys are leaving but would you stay and toss me a few?” Bokuto gave Akaashi his puppy dog eyes and Akaashi felt all his retorts die on the tip of his tongue. There was no way he could say no when Bokuto was looking at him like that.
“I guess that is fine Bokuto-san, but we can’t stay late a storm is coming in,” Akaashi replied quickly.
More and more people left the gym not wanting to be dragged into Bokuto’s impromptu practice. Not that Akaashi minded though, if he was going to have a melt down he’d rather it just be him and Bokuto there. All that could be heard for the next half hour was the sound of volleyballs being slammed into the ground and the rain picking up outside.
Occasionally Bokuto would exclaim, “Did you see that Agaashiii?” to which Akaashi would calmly reply, “Yes Bokuto-san, you did very well.” All Akaashi could do was stroke Bokuto’s ego so hopefully things would end on a semi-good note.
“The storm is getting bad Bokuto-san, perhaps it's time we get home before it gets worse” Bokuto let out a dejected sigh and looked to Akaashi with sad eyes, “I guess you're right, Mom’s gonna be upset if im soaked when I get home.”
They both looked at each other for a moment, not daring to say anything. It was Akaashi who moved first grabbing a few stray volleyballs to put away. The gym was silent as they cleaned up and as Akaashi grabbed his things to leave he felt a tug at his sleeve. Bokuto was standing there staring at him with waiting eyes. Finally the silence broke as Bokutp said, “Thank you for these last two years, I know I'm not the easiest to deal with. I don’t think I'll ever find a better setter, so thank you.”
Akaashi was at a loss for words, the future he had been dreading was now upon him. He realized Bokuto was still awaiting his reply so he quickly responded, “No, thank you Bokuto-san, I’m honored to be your teammate, I know you're going to be a star one day.”
“Do you really mean that Akaashi?” Bokuto looked at him with gleaming eyes.
“Yes Bokuto-san, you’re a very talented volleyball player. I don't doubt you’ll make it big.”
Bokuto suddenly surged forward and embraced Akaashi. It took a moment for Akaashi’s initial shock to wear off before he slowly moved his arms upwards to return the hug. They stayed like that for a moment, until they pulled away. Both were at a loss for what to say next. Bokuto took the initiative and nodded towards the door.
“I guess it’s getting last i gotta get home,”
“You're right the rains getting quite bad, goodbye Bokuto-san”
“Goodbye Akaasi,” Bokuto said with a sad smile. He looked back one last time before walking out of the gym door.
Akaahi felt an immense pressure on his chest suddenly, “Was that it? Is that the last time I see him?” Akaashi’s brain was racing, it was such a lackluster goodbye that couldn’t be what two years of pinning would amount to.
For once Akaashi didn’t think, he flung the gym door open and embraced the cold air. In the distance he could see Bokuto’s silhouette getting smaller and smaller. It pained Akaashi to see him leave, it was like the light was dimming the farther away he got.
Akaashi burst into a sprint to catch up with him, the cold air was burning his lungs and he could feel his clothes get heavier the more wet they got from the rain. He had to slow down before he came crashing into Bokuto. Bokuto turned around and looked at him with wondering eyes. “Akaashi? Are you ok, you're out of breath?” Akaashi took a moment to catch his breath before saying, “Bokuto-san I don’t want this to be goodbye, I don’t want to admit that this may be the last time I see you.”
“Akaashi what do you mean?”
Akasshi took a breath before spitting out, “Bokuto-san I’m in love with you.”
He didn't dare look back up, he didn’t want to see Bokuto’s warm eyes filled with pity or worse, to see them turn dark with disgust. He didn't have to wait long until his chin was pulled upwards and another pair of lips was clashing with his. It took him all of two seconds to realize Bokuto was kissing him. Warmth spread across his body as he kissed Bokuto back, the cold rain was long forgotten. He felt sparks tickle across his skin when Bokuto grabbed his cheek and deepened the kiss. “This is really happening.”
Akaashi began to smile into the kiss before he and Bokuto separated . Bokuto looked down at Akaashi with a big ass smile as he said, “Akaashi i've waited so long for you to say that,” Bokutp grabbed Akaasi’s hand before continuing, “I’ve loved you for so long I just wasn't sure someone as beautiful as you would want to be with me, I know my mood swings can be annoying and you might get tired of me, so I never thought you would love me too.”
“Bokuto-san I don’t think I could ever get tired of you, it's the opposite actually you give me so much energy and bring light into my world.”
Bokuto smiled once more and captured Akaashi’s lips in another kiss, this time when they seperated Bokuto stayed closed and whispered against Akaashi’s lips, “ Koutarou, call me Koutarou.” “Ok Koutarou, only if you call me Keiji.”
They kissed again and Keji felt his whole body warm up, the cold rain didn't matter when Koutaro was with him, he could swear that each time their lips met that night he saw sparks fly.
