Work Text:
Kise and Momoi had been waiting at the entrance of Seirin High for quite a bit now. Honestly, as much as a lovely helper Momoi was, they’d run out of conversation topics on the way to school and he didn’t think polite small talk would help with the situation. “Right!” The sudden exclamation from Momoi startled Kise a bit. “Ki-chan, what kind of chocolates do you want to make?” Right. It’s not like Kise had forgotten, he just got distracted, is all.
They were at Seirin waiting for Kagami to leave basketball practice so they could go to his place and make chocolate for the fastly approaching Valentine’s day. But, unlike both his friends, Kise wasn’t in an established relationship. His situation was complicated, to say the least. No matter how many times Momoi had tried to reassure him that his feelings most likely were not unrequited, he still wasn’t quite so sure.
See, Kise was hopelessly in love with one of his best friends, Aomine Daiki. But the issue at hand is that he was at least 99% sure that Aomine Daiki is a totally heterosexual man with no interest in men whatsoever. With all those Mai-chan magazines and that love for breasts, there was no way in hell that Aomine had any interest in men. No way!
Kise was snapped out of his thoughts by another “Ki-chan?” from Momoi. “Ah, yes, sorry Momoicchi! I was thinking of something not too cutesy and not too bitter, maybe?” Just as he finished, he heard steps from behind him and turned to see Kagami had finally finished practice and was ready to take them to his house. He was attempting to carry himself in his usual, carefree manner but if Kise looked deep enough, he could sense a bit of nervousness in his gestures.
“Kagamicchi! Long time no see!” Kise threw an arm over his friend’s shoulder. “Is Kurokocchi not with you?” He teased, knowing exactly why those two were not together that day.
“Did you forget why we got together today, idiot!? ‘Sides, it’s not like Tetsuya and I are together all of the time…” Kagami trailed off, pouting slightly.
“Sorry, sorry, I couldn’t help myself! You look so lonely without him! You two truly are each other’s missing half, huh.” Kise looked almost reminiscent.
“ Anyways , shall we get going?” Momoi intervened in their little chat, almost bouncing with anticipation for what was to come. Kise felt a shiver go through his spine at both her tone and her enthusiasm.
…
They arrived at Kagami’s place with little to no distractions. Kagami had already done the ingredients shopping before (which both Momoi and Kise had paid their corresponding third for, thank you very much ), so all they really needed to do was wash their hands and get to work. After a silent moment in Kagami's kitchen, Momoi was the one who decided to break the ice.
“So…where do we start?” She asked, turning her head to the side slightly like a stereotypical anime girl.
“Well, most of the ingredients are in the fridge so maybe you could start getting those out? Also, Kise, there’s aprons in the drawer on your left. Don’t ask about the animal print one. It was a gift from Alex.” There was a slight blush on Kagami’s face when he finished.
“Why would we need aprons? Aren’t we just, y’know, melting and refreezing chocolate?” Momoi asked again, innocently thinking her clothes would not get dirty.
“Chocolate is traitorous, Momoicchi!” Kise exclaimed, suddenly not so down about the whole ordeal.
“Well, yes and no. We’re going to temper some chocolate.” Kagami put on a serious face, like he totally knew what he was doing and had done it a thousand times.
“We’re going to what now? ” Kise and Momoi said in unison.
“Tempering the chocolate is just a weird process that makes it shinier and not melt when it’s been out of the freezer for a while. I thought you had researched this stuff!” Kagami explained, not going into too much detail as to not melt their mortal brains.
“Well, it doesn’t matter now. You’re going to teach us, right, Kagami-kun?” Momoi looked at Kise as if she was asking for help. He got the hint, and gave Kagami his best puppy eyes with Momoi in tow.
“Fine, fine! I’ll help. But it’s only because I want to see Kise finally get his shit together and confess.” Said Kagami, blatantly looking away from two pairs of doe eyes directed at him.
“What’s that supposed to mean, Kagamicchi!?”
…
Things were oddly calm in the kitchen for a while. They seemed to work together surprisingly well, considering their dynamics. Although Momoi and Kise had gotten close through the past few months (they both had a lot of complaining to do about Aomine, and while they weren’t doing that, they had a lot of other topics in common they loved to discuss), Kagami was someone totally new to their now-trio.
“Kagamicchi, can you pass me the knife again?”
“Sure. Oh, Momoi, here’s some of that pink edible dust you wanted.”
“Thank you so much, Kagami-kun! This is starting to look good! Riko-chan is going to love these, for sure!”
“Oi, Kise, why don’t you try the heart-shaped molds?”
“As if Aominecchi would like those!”
…
Time passed, and even after Kagami and Momoi were done with their chocolates, Kise still wasn’t too sure on what to make himself. Sure, he knew what he would want, but as to what Aomine would want…that was still a mystery. As close as they were, and as well as they knew each other, Kise still wasn’t sure what kind of chocolates would make for the best gift.
“Hey, Kagamicchi, what kind of chocolates would you hate to receive on Valentine’s day?” He tentatively asked his friend, knowing that he and Aomine were total opposites.
“Well, probably something that is made wrong on purpose. Why?” Kagami replied, not quite understanding where Kise was getting at with his question.
“It’s nothing, nevermind.” Kise looked dejected. There was no way he couldn’t think of anything at all! There must be something he could do.
“You don’t seem too well, Ki-chan. Are you sure you don’t want to brainstorm for a bit?” Asked Momoi ever-so-gently.
“Yeah, I think that’s a good idea. Please help a guy out, Momoicchi, Kagamicchi!” Kise put his hands together in a pleading manner.
…
Kise walked to school like he normally would, except there was nothing normal about that day. He sighed for what felt like the thousandth time that hour. He had made sure he looked his best, and he carried his lucky item for the day (a shonen manga, courtesy of Midorima, who may or may not care a lot about those two idiots).
The chocolates had turned out great, actually, with Kagami’s masterful handiwork and Momoi’s expert input. Although Kise felt nervous, he was confident that, at the very least, Aomine would still enjoy the sweet treat, even if his confession went downhill.
School at Kaijou carried out without any inconveniences, and Kise was surprised at the amount of chocolates he received from girls left and right throughout the day. Even though most of them made sure to clarify that they were girichoko for ‘that one time Kise-kun helped with…’ it was blatantly obvious they were all lying through their teeth for a chance to give the Kise Ryouta chocolate for Valentine’s day.
By the end of the day, he felt grateful to past-Kise for carrying another bag for the chocolates he’d received throughout the day because oh God were there a lot of chocolates. He’d agreed to meet with Aomine after class had ended for the day and he was also grateful to whatever gods were up there for canceling basketball practice for the day. Though, if he wanted to make it in time, he’d have to hurry and stop overthinking so much.
…
He made it closer to the usual street basketball court and, out of habit, he fixed his hair. He checked the time and, by sheer luck, he’d made it there early. Although, he could make out a familiar head of blue hair. The closer he got to the court, the surer he became that this was his Aominecchi. He was playing basketball with such fervor, the ball never missing the hoop. Kise almost felt bad for interrupting this moment.
“Aominecchi! Over here!” Kise called out, waving cheerfully as he greeted his friend.
Aomine was in the middle of a shot, and he almost missed. Almost.
“Kise! Took you long enough. You’ve got guts, telling me to come meet you here and then being late yourself. You’re lucky I know how to entertain myself.” Aomine faked being upset, but Kise could see a smile on his face.
“You’re so mean, Aominecchi! You know it’s Valentine’s day, right? I had to stop home to leave all the chocolates I got! Also, you're here early so do you really have the right to complain?” Kise put on his usual cheerful persona, but he was extremely nervous. What if Aomine didn’t like him back? What if he was disgusted by him? What if he never wanted to see him again after this?
Aomine frowned. “Well, we’re both here now. What is it you wanted to talk about?” He asked, almost as if he was trying not to sound too interested.
“Oh, yeah, about that. This, uh, this is for you.” Kise reached into his bag and pulled out the box of chocolates he had prepared with Momoi and Kagami earlier. His hands were shaking slightly and sweating profusely. A stark contrast to Aomine, who was as calm as could be, the only emotion really showing itself on his face being confusion.
“For me? Isn’t this supposed to be something girls do for their crushes?” Aomine inquired, ignorant as to what Kise’s intentions were. He still took the chocolates in his hands.
“Ahahaha, well, yes, but you see…” Kise stammered, blushing like crazy, “IjustwantedtoconfesstoyoueventhoughIknowyou’restraightbecauseI’velikedyouforatleastthreeyearsandeveryonearoundmeisgoinginsane!” he blurted out. As soon as he realized what he said, he covered his own mouth and blushed even deeper, if that was possible.
“Hah?” Now Aomine was confused. If he were to be perfectly honest, he’d only heard the words ‘you’re straight’ and ‘I’ve liked you’, which confused him greatly. “Kise, what-”
“It’s ok, I know you don’t like me back. I just wanted to…get that off my chest, I guess. You deserve to know, too.” Kise looked deflated, while all Aomine could do was freeze up. He’d never been in a situation like this.
“And I know you’re probably dis… disgusted by me but everyone around me was pushing me to fess up. From…from Momoicchi to Murasakibaracchi, they all wanted me to do something about this stupid crush of mine.” Kise was trembling, his eyes glassy. “And yet, I seem to be the only one to know that you have no interest in me, or men in general for that matter. But that’s ok. I can live with that. Just please, Aominecchi, please don’t hate me. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if you did, I-”
“Kise, who told you I was straight?” Aomine interrupted his ramblings with a straight face, now getting the bigger picture.
“Eh? Isn’t it obvious?” Kise asked, confused. He still looked depressed, but he was mostly surprised. “You did. All your life. Throughout middle school and even after that.”
“Who’s to say I can’t like both men and women?” Questioned Aomine. “And it’s not like I was that horny through middle school!”
“Wait.” Kise stopped him. “You’re not straight? You’re not straight? Is today my lucky day?” He laughed as if he were going crazy, his eyes still watery and his voice sounding nasally.
“Oi, it’s not that big of a deal! Now you’re making me self conscious!” And I’m not even the one who confessed , he’d wanted to add, but he didn’t want to put too much pressure into Kise after he’d almost broken into tears in front of him.
“Sorry for forgetting bisexuality was a thing, Aominecchi.” Said Kise, who was now much calmer than before. Now that he knew Aomine wasn’t a homophobe, he could sleep in peace. But, still, he had yet to answer his confession.
“Don’t worry about it. Anyways, about the…thing. I’m guessing that this is not a prank just to get me to come out, is it?”
“I wouldn’t dream of it, Aominecchi!”
“Then…I don’t have chocolates for you, but maybe you could settle for something else?” Aomine asked. Kise had a hopeful glint in his eyes.
“Something else? Like what?”
Aomine hugged Kise by his waist and slowly pulled in. Kise felt the famous butterflies in his stomach, and it felt as if time had stopped once their lips connected. It was far from the best kiss, as they were both inexperienced, but they still felt the passion behind each movement. Kise swung his arms over Aomine’s shoulders and slightly angled his head to deepen their kiss. He tasted like nothing in particular, and his slightly chapped lips didn’t make for the softest sensation but Kise felt as if it was the best thing he’d ever experienced. Their lips eventually parted, as they were both left panting for air.
“Should I try out the chocolates you’ve made for me, Ryouta ?” Kise felt as if he could melt in Aomine's embrace.
“Yes, please.”
Omake, one day later
Operation: Make chocolate!!
Kagami: so? how’d it go? @Kise
Kise: great! he loooved the chocolates ヾ( ˃ᴗ˂ )◞ • *✰
Momoi: What’d we tell you? Of course, I know Dai-chan best ᕙ( •̀ ᗜ •́ )ᕗ
Kise: well, I’m with him right now and my boyfriend has some choice words for you momoicchi
Momoi: Tell him not to be mean.
Kise: yes ma’am
Kise: anyways how did things go for kagamicchi we haven’t heard from him and kurokocchi at all
Kagami: things went great, i think. tetsuya also made something for me, he said they were girichoko but i think it was that deadpan humor of his. how about you, momoi?
Momoi: Things went super good here too! Riko-chan loved the chocolates and she made stuff for me too o( ˶^▾^˶ )o
Kagami: OH
Kagami: so how’re you holding up after having consumed that.
Kise: wow. mean
Momoi: It was surprisingly normal! As expected of my Riko-chan, with just a bit of help she improved her cooking a lot ヾ(。✪ω✪。)シ
Kagami: yeah right
Kise smiled as he turned off his phone, his friends’ antics never failing to lift his mood. It’s not like it needed lifting though, as he heard a very familiar voice over his shoulder.
“Ryouta, what’re you smiling at?” His boyfriend (he still felt like a schoolgirl with a crush every time he remembered Aomine was his boyfriend) called his given name, something he’d only started doing a day before. Aomine swung an arm over Kise’s waist, pulling him closer so they could cuddle. Kise buried his head in Aomine’s shoulder. Aomine smelled nice.
“Mm, nothing much. Just Kagamicchi and Momoicchi telling me about their conquests.” He figured he might as well be honest.
“Conquests?” Aomine raised an eyebrow. “Since when are you and Bakagami on such good terms?”
“Eh, long story.” He dismissed Aomine’s noise of protest as he pulled him in for a kiss.
