Boil the Ocean; Stricken

Summary:

Straight hair, straight A's, straight forward. That's what Seafoam always told herself. Well, not the hair part, but whatever. But when Seafoam was thrust into a chase after her brother, she meets a rainwing who treats her like a real person. Now, she's fallen head over heels for this lovely person, and hopes she can't tell.

Civet was always good at telling other dragon's emotions. Her parents, her brothers, and even herself. But Seafoam was just a tough banana to peel.

Notes:

My back is officially destroyed.

10/10, would write more soon.
also idk why but this feels like my favorite rom cliche, and i can't shake that feeling.

seafoam having voices in her head of her dead vindictive mom and of her very lesbian romance is a very big head cannon of mine, fight me.

Work Text:

“God, I’m stupid.” Seafoam remarked under her breath, hoping she couldn’t hear her.
Civet snorted, something Seafoam years or even months ago would have thought to be one of the lowest forms of laughter, but when it came to Civet, it was sweet and endearing.
“Wrong again, Foamy. You’re pretty bad at this.” Civet smiled, a pure smile, which Seafoam thought was sweeter than honey and sugar.
“Oh, darn. I’m so salty about this.” Seafoam spoke loudly, in a sarcastic fashion. She started to smile, trying to reciprocate Civet’s beautiful smile, aiming to replicate that joy that just extruded out of Civet in everything she said or did.
Civet laughed at Seafoam’s comment, in a way only she could. Her voice was so pretty, like sugar drowned in honey. The sounds of her joyful raucous laughter echoing across the abysmally gray cave, lighting up the melancholy of the surroundings they were staying in together, into something that felt something like home.

Home.

Seafoam really didn’t want to think about home. Of course, home was where her only child resides, and most everything she cared about here, but home is where her responsibility lives, where she’s stuck with her thoughts, her feelings, herself. And besides, Seafoam has found something new to care about other than her royal life.

Right before the sun started to dim, Civet started to get up, dusting herself off of all the dust that had been on the cave floor.
“Where are you going?” Seafoam questioned Civet. As she was speaking, she started to get up, just in case she was needed.
“Well, I assumed we’d want actual light to see,” She smiled. “So, I decided that I’ll get some sticks.”
Seafoam debated whether she should ask if she could come with. She wanted to, but had no energy left in her.
“Well, see you. CeeVee.” Seafoam spoke softly. Civet stared right at Seafoam for a few seconds and then just chuckled softly, as to match the tone of Seafoam’s voice.
“Bye.” Civet smiled warmly.

The moment Civet left for wood to make fire; Seafoam sighed. Before she had left the Sea Kingdom for Mako, she had been very reserved around other dragons, save for a small few. Even then, she’d rather be quiet and listen than speak out and contribute. This got even worse when Permafrost was murdered by her own mother. After that, not a single person could see how she felt, because it’s much safer that way. But when she left as queen, and met Civet, the commoner rainwing who wouldn’t even know the pressure of ruling, she wanted to understand. She treated Seafoam like an actual dragon, for the first time in far too many years. They were so different from each other, and yet it felt so amazingly magical any time they talked to each other.
“Three moons, am I sappy.” Seafoam thought to herself.
Civet was breaking down the turtle shell around Seafoam’s heart and it was scary.

After some time, Civet had gotten back with enough sticks to light far too many fires. As she lugged around the arm-fulls of sticks and kindle for fire making, she moved over by the middle of the dusty cave to make a nice fire that should last them till morning.
“Now that’s a lot of wood.” Seafoam commented.
“Well, I didn’t know how much we’d actually need, and I’d rather stay here with you. So yeah, a lot of wood.” At this comment, Seafoam couldn’t control a fast-approaching smile.
“Me too.”

As Seafoam and Civet started to build the, at this point, bonfire, Seafoam couldn’t help but idly wonder whether Civet could tell Seafoam was deeply in love with her. She really hoped she wasn’t that bad at hiding her emotions as she had done for years, but it was possible. After they were done making the bonfire, Seafoam spoke softly out loud,
“I’m going to sleep. Good night.” Even though Seafoam hadn’t done much on that day, she was still exhausted, so it was possible that good sleep would help. As Seafoam got up and started to lay down by the fire to try to get good sleep for once in her life. As she started to get comfortable, Civet, being her extroverted self, decided that right next to Seafoam was as good a spot as any to hit the hay. Seafoam’s face instantly turned bright cherry red, so to try to be discreet about her obvious fact that she was very love stricken with Civet, she turned away from the flame of the fire, and from Civet.
“So,” Civet started, staring into the night skies that the moons above illuminated. “Sure are a lot of stars out tonight.
“That there is.” Seafoam replied, seriously wondering if she knew or not. At this point, it was pretty blatant, right?
“Yep,” Civet spoke with a yawn, obviously tired just like Seafoam.
“We should probably actually sleep, Civet,” Seafoam said, gazing up into the midnight sky above.
“Goodnight, Foamy. Sleep tight.” Civet spoke, as she patted Seafoam on the shoulder in a way that was supposed to come off as a goodnight gesture, but to Seafoam came off as something different. Seafoam paused for a moment, trying to think about the connotations that the patting gesture may have, but quickly enough wrote it off as Civet being tired and trying to be nice.
“Goodnight, Civet.” Seafoam stuttered a little.

Goodnight, Foamy. Sleep Tight.

That night, she did not sleep very tight.

The weight she felt was unbearable as Seafoam watched in horror as her dead fiancé fell to the ground, as life drained from his face in front of her eyes, over and over. While tears welled up in Seafoam’s eyes, her mother, Azure, laughed right in front of her face, repeating the phrase,
“If you are going to be the future queen, running off with an IceWing is not an option.” Azure struck her usual sickening smile.
This was one of Seafoam’s most common nightmares. Her mother. Stuck in a loop of watching his death, listening to her mother's sick reasons why she did it, and sobbing uncontrollably. She hated every single second of it. She hadn’t had it in some time, starting soon after she met Civet. Like in nearly all of Seafoam’s dreams and emotions, she ran. Ran from her mother and ran from the loop of Permafrost’s unforgettable demise. As she ran, the surroundings changed from the bloody beach where she last saw her fiancé, turned into the palace where she spent her most lonely years, to the bustling town of Possibility, transformed into the dull colors of the cave she temporarily resided in. Finally, somewhere where she felt safe, in any amount. Civet sat next to her, smiling as usual.
“Come on,” She elongated the last word. “Wake up.”

As Seafoam woke up, still warmed by the embers of the once large fire now turned into a pile of ash and hot wood, she looked around her surroundings, making sure she wasn’t still asleep. Seafoam sighed in relief, now finding that she was still in a cave with Civet, and not on a beach with her mother and dead fiancé or stuck in the hustle and bustle of a town. The bright colors of the sunrise were nearly blinding but somehow beautiful. As she watched the rising sun, she spoke out loud to speak to Civet about the beauty of the sunrise,
“Hey, Ceevee. This sunrise is kinda pretty, isn’t it?” Seafoam only received an echo reverberated from the jagged cave.
“Wait,” Seafoam thought to herself, looking around the damp hole of a cave, devoid of all life and joyful light that she slept in.
“Where’s Civet?”

—----------------------------------------------

Before the sun shone into the small-ish cave she had slept in, Civet got up, and stared at the dying fire that they had made last night, and then at Seafoam.
Sigh.
Civet had always been the person to fall for somebody faster than a banana fell from the trees, much unlike her brother Macaw. But even for her, she just opened up like a banana to Seafoam, and she prayed to the moons that she wasn’t as obvious as she had been in the past. But just because she had been too open in the past, that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be in the present, right? As she walked out of the cave into the open air, and the comfortable darkness of the early morning. As she strolled through the path and had followed while collecting firewood from the night before. Civet had picked this path the day before and now because it didn’t truly have a destination. It gave her time to think, and be by herself, which unbeknownst to most people, she did enjoy from time to time.
As she stared into the trees along her path, and the roses by her side, she started to think. Civet thought about where she came from, and life she had known. She thought about the people she knew before she left to find her brother. She thought of the people she loved. She thought about Seafoam.
Civet had always been pretty decent when it came to emotions. She cared about her family, had joy with her friends, and even loved other people. She knew lots about her emotions, and other people’s emotions. But with Seafoam, it was hard to tell. She was quiet, and obviously was uncomfortable around other people. Seafoam was a new total opposite of Civet. But even so, Civet could tell she had fallen in love with her, and she knew she couldn’t stop that. Civet continued on her path through the woods, gazing at the life that was in it. As she glanced through the forest, two butterflies caught her eye. Their blue and green colors were like no other.
—---

As Seafoam stepped out of the dank cave and into the blinding light of day, she stood, wondering where Civet would’ve even gone at this time in the morning. It wasn’t even noon. Seafoam looked around, the tree line stretching for what looked like it could be miles. She hopped down the rocky outcropping, which was more of a difficult task than she expected. As she hopped from jagged rock to jagged rock, she pondered why Civet would even leave,

Did she just need a walk?

Did she just need to eat?

Or was it her?
That last thought made Seafoam’s eyes start to water, blinding her in a fit of tears.
“I thought you were stronger than this. She probably doesn’t even care about you. She probably left because you were so obnoxious. Shape up.” a voice sickeningly similar to Azure whispered into her ears. “Give up. You are weak.”

Seafoam sighed and finally got off of the blasted rocks, and fell to the ground, with all the dirt flying into the air and clumping to her scales. The voice in her head was right. She should leave. She should have left ages ago.

“Hey, dummy. Don’t give up, she’s so close and she does care. Go.” A voice that sounded like a pile of sweet sugar drowned in honey.

As Seafoam got up, she dusted herself off, and smiled. She tried to at least. She started to walk along the path that Seafoam assumed Civet walked on the night before. Soon, she started to jog. Soon after, she ran.

After running for some ten minutes, she decided to just slow down. Civet could be anywhere at this point. Maybe in the nearby Possibility, or maybe she decided to just stay on the path. As she walked the path, she started to gaze into the forest. She suddenly stopped, struck into place, staring at the beautiful blue and green flowers.

—---------------

Civet sat laid back on the ground, staring into the sky, the clouds forming shapes she couldn’t make out as objects, but rather feelings. She couldn’t describe it. The clouds didn’t conform to anything. Civet couldn’t tell what feelings she felt, but she felt them.
At about noon, Civet soon started to think about Seafoam. She thought about her absolutely enchanting eyes. Her wonderful words. Her kissable lips.

“God. I am such a basic sap.” Civet smiled. Seafoam just made her a sap. She had such a way with words. She was unlike anyone she had ever met.

Civet then had to contain her screams when somebody tripped over her, a sharp pain in her side and stomach became the only thing she could process at the moment.

“Hey! Watch it, bozo!” Civet hollered out at the person who dared interrupt her gay fantasy.

The unknown person stumbled on their words,
“I’m sorry ma’am! Don’t- Wait, Civet, is that you?” Seafoam asked.

“Seafoam?” Civet rebuked. Her eyes widened, upon realizing she just yelled at her favorite person. “I am so sorry, Seafoam. I-I didn’t mean to yell at you.”
“It’s fine! Don’t worry!” Seafoam looked down and stared at the fact that she was still on Civet. She gazed into Civet’s eyes as Seafoam’s face went as red as a tomato. Civet could feel her blood start to rush to her face.
Seafoam made a couple noises that sounded like they were vying to resemble words but gave up halfway through, and just got off of Civet. She laid right next to Civet, and stared into the clouds, her face still cherry red. Civet turned to face Seafoam.
“Seafoam, I’m sorry I just left like that, without even telling you-” Civet started, before being interrupted by Seafoam,
“It’s ok, Civet.” She stared right into Civet’s eyes, and Civet stared back. Seafoam’s deep blue eyes were just enchanting.
“Were you looking for me? I didn’t mean to give you a scare.” Civet turned her head away in embarrassment.
Seafoam broke her trance-like state. She laughed, a sound which made Civet’s heart melt. Maybe Seafoam wasn’t some royal overlord or whatever, but instead a sweet fruit, a real person. Somebody Civet really fell for.
Seafoam rubbed her neck.
“Yeah, I was. I woke up and couldn’t find you.” she smiled and looked back up at the sky, her eyes darting to look at the still shapeless clouds. Civet laid back to join her. After some time of comfortable silence, Seafoam spoke up,
“These clouds make me feel something. I can’t really tell what exactly, but it sure is something.” Seafoam said softly, trying not to disturb Civet. She moved her hands in the air that was supposed to represent a shape, but ended up conveying a blobby feeling. Civet laughed, her mouth widening to the point of cracking.
“I felt the exact same thing.” Civet spoke softly, to match Seafoam’s tone of voice.

Civet turned to Seafoam, and was able to glance at Seafoam’s growing smile before drifting into sleep.

—------------

“Oh my God, is she- is she asleep?” Seafoam thought to herself as she got closer to Civet’s face. After poking Civet in the nose several times, she confirmed her theory.
“Yup, definitely asleep.”

After waiting some while for Civet to wake up naturally, switching from staring at the clouds and at Civet’s gorgeous face, she decided that it would be safer for both her and herself if she got both of them to their temporary home. But first, they would probably want a fire at said temporary home. So, before Seafoam collapsed, she set out to get some firewood.

After getting as many twigs and kindling that she could find in the coming darkness, she went back to where Civet was to wake her up. As she plopped down all the burnable materials, she bent down to poke Civet awake. After a few dozen pokes, Civet dragged herself up, rubbed her eyes, and stretched.
“Yeah, Foamy?” Civet asked, yawning profusely.
“We, uh, need to go home, and I’d rather not carry you there.” Seafoam smiled, and helped her up.
Civet groaned, but chuckled a bit at the thought of being carried home.
“Fine, but only because I don’t want you to over-exert yourself.” Civet smiled, and hugged Seafoam, which only lasted for a few seconds but Seafoam wished it would last forever.
Seafoam picked up the firestarter, and with Civet, started walking home.

The walk home sure was like a dream.

Civet and Seafoam walked down the road they had both gone on. The twinkly light of the stars shone onto the two people, illuminating their path like a broadway musical. It felt as if the stars and the moons were there just for the two.
As the two stared up at the sky while walking, Seafoam pointed out a shooting star, falling from the sky, and tapped Civet on the shoulder.
“Civet, look. It’s beautiful.” Seafoam stared up into the sky at her first sight of a shooting star.
“Just like you.” Civet slurred. She was clearly tired.
Seafoam’s face went so red, she felt like it could be a source of light.
“You too.”

When they finally reached their cave of a home, Civet basically fell onto the dusty floor, sending a cloud of dust towards Seafoam. After building as much of a fire as her twigs would allow, she walked around the cave, around the fire and Seafoam decided that next to Civet was as good a place as any.
“Goodnight, CeeVee.” Seafoam pat Civet on the shoulders.
Civet turned to face the ceiling.
“Night, Foamy.” Civet spoke softly, before the both of them drifted generally to sleep.
