Each harsh word shook him to the bone.
Each angry shout hurt his ears.
He felt his body curling into himself.
He didn’t like this. This happens every time.
He didn’t dare look up to meet her angry yellow gaze. Her sharp eyes and slited over pupils.
The carpet that was usually so soft felt rugged against his knees. His hands were pressing so hard against his ears he would have thought that they would meld into his head.
He wanted to see his sister. She wouldn’t yell at him. He wanted to see her gentle blue gray eyes, he wanted to see her smile. He wanted to be with her, because then he wasn’t alone. He wasn’t sad.
He wanted to be with his dad. He would care. His sister always spoke so happily about him. He sounded so nice compared to their mom.
He flinched violently when the door slammed shut.
Then the room was quiet.
He could only hear the pitter patter of the rain outside his window.
Slowly chancing a glance up, he found his room was empty.
Standing up on shaky legs, he stumbled over to his door. Looking out he found the hallways leading to his room were empty, no signs of his enraged mother anywhere.
Closing the door quietly, he wandered over to his window. He knew he should be studying. He was so far behind his sister. She was so skilled in pretty much everything, yet here was, struggling to even come into contact with his birthright. Something that he was guaranteed to be able to do. Something he was supposed to do. Something he needed to do. Yet he couldn’t do it. He felt like a failure.
Yet, despite this, even looking at his desk in the far corner of the room exhausted him.
He focused his gaze on the water running down the glass of the window. He watched as they slowly slid down, picking up speed each time they ate another, more unfortunate, one. It was soothing.
He felt as if he could go to sleep like this. He would like to.
As his eyes drooped shut, he watched stars fill the sky. One by one, they lit up the sky.
In the seconds before his eyes finally closed, a streak of light shot by. A shooting star , he had thought to himself. A wish .
What would he want? He wasn’t sure. But it would be a waste to let the star go by on its own.
Yet…
It wasn’t alone. There were so many other stars that filled the sky. It would never have to be alone. Unlike him.
He found his wish.
Someone special .
