Work Text:
“I left him for my life,
He left me for my life,
we may not meet for our life,
we sacrificed our love for our life,
we can't live apart in this life,
we can't hold us close in this life,
our growth mean to us in this life,
our partners are with us in this life,
we got very short time in this life,
but promise me you will be mine in next life....”
― Eagles
Sometimes the most beautiful love stories are those of which we are witnesses, not those of which we are authors. But also, sometimes we do not witness that happiness, but a bittersweet mixture, because life is not perfect, but it is at times.
Many years ago I met two boys, we were young, foolish dreamers who wanted to take on the world, so confident, so innocent. At some point, those two boys fell in love, they fell in love when they weren't supposed and of course, they ended up separating then. They fought, of course, they did. They fought to be together, but sometimes, not even the greatest sacrifice is enough to succeed. I heard sometime later, that those high school students became adults, graduated from college, both married good women, and sought to start a family and have a good job. They never saw each other again.
But fate is not stupid, it does not keep soul mates away forever and just as one day their families separated them, a subway car brought them together again.
It was a winter morning, one of those many where the world moves very fast both boarded the same car. Years had passed since the last time they saw each other, it was no longer the same city, nor did they look the same, but they recognized each other. At some point, in one that neither of them can explain, their eyes met... And the days began to pass, from Monday to Friday, looks, sighs, desires, and memories; a dance without a compass, a waking dream of two lost lovers.
They sit opposite each other and they don't even imagine that they are wearing the most beautiful clothes for each other. Maybe they think, that if they were brave and a little smarter. If they were special, they might have the courage to cross the wagon and wonder if they still love each other. Perhaps, it is the fear of time that has passed, their skin is no longer smooth, their hair is full of white strips... They are no longer those young people in love, they barely know each other.
Suddenly they look at each other, and they sigh. They close their eyes and look away. They barely breathe. From station to station, in front of you and me. Silence comes and goes, time goes on, nothing stops it, and the moment comes when one of them gets off the wagon and the spell is broken. Their lives continue as usual as if they didn't connect. One of them knows that he has taken the same metro line for the last 30 years, and the other that he started taking it when his usual line went into maintenance.
They learn anew from each other through those little encounters, the older of the two always wears a suit... probably he is an important lawyer, and the other always brings art supplies maybe he did follow his true dream to become an artist. The first, always wears colored socks, his little fight against the system, and the youngest limps, as a result of his struggle... One day dimples is accompanied by a young woman, maybe 30 years old, she calls him dad, and he cares for her with a face full of sweetness and pride. The other watches the scene with a crushed heart, he has no children, they were once in his plans, but after a failed arranged marriage, he turned to fleeting one-night stands and eternal loneliness.
Months go by, 1, 2, 3, 4... The other subway line is fixed. Dimples retire from his job, and there are no real excuses to take the subway anymore; But the two of them, every day, at 7:30 in the morning, get on the same subway on the same wagon number 5.
And then it happens, they wake up their lips. They pronounce their names stammering. I guess they think: what silly guys. But time stops, their bodies move on their own, and they get closer.
" I've missed you"
And they are already arriving, their lives have changed, a special day this March eleventh. They hold hands, they reach a tunnel that turns off the light.
They meet each other's faces thanks to their hands. They become brave and kiss each other on the lips.

In a commuter train, in the middle of a huge city, 48 years later, two lost lovers, separated by those who do not understand true love and united by destiny for a brief moment, give each other the last breath of their hearts before losing themselves forever again in time.
