The pub was teeming with people. They were all workers, of course, mainly from the local mines or factories, with nothing better to do on a Friday night than drink their sorrows away. Remus was able to blend in perfectly with the crowd. No need for names here, as long as you pay and keep quiet. He would have to change his name now, thank the lord. “Remus lupin” was too… odd. It was 1894, and everyone had names like ‘Thomas’ or ‘William’ or ‘George’. Honestly, Remus had no idea what his mum was thinking when she decided on his name. Still, changing it would be perfect. Maybe he would leave the country, or go to London. Probably the Latter – it was cheaper.
He would get a job working in a big house. That was it. Many people wanted staff, and he knew how valets worked. His father was not a total waste of space. Plus, he knew someone very good at faking documents who still owed Remus a favour.
He just needed to get to London first. From Portsmouth. Without the army, or the Navy, knowing. Easy. Or, it would be, if he had enough money.
Ah, well. What’s life without a little risk.
