Chapter 1: The Cleaning of Gems

Chapter Text

Morgan trudged through the unlocked door to their apartment, not paying attention as their mostly empty duffle knocked over the umbrella stand. They groaned loudly as they collapsed onto the sofa, and buried their face into a pillow that was embroidered to say “Live. Laugh. Steal”.

Alex snickered from the nearby recliner, putting down their cup of tea. “Saw your failed heist on the news. Good job evading Barnaby and the police, though. They all looked really annoyed in their interviews.”

Morgan replied by groaning even louder into the pillow.

Alex sighed. “Look man, I’m sure you’ll manage to steal those gems on your next attempt. You never give up this easily.”

Morgan’s reply was muffled through the pillow. “Foday was fe last day for fe exhibit. And now if’s crawling wiff police.”

“Oh.” Alex stared at the heap of despair that was their best friend. Why were they so adorable even in this state of misery? Alright, Alex, they thought to themself, time to comfort Morgan in their time of need. “You smell like sweat and failure, why don’t you go clean yourself up?”

At this, Morgan actually lifted their head from the pillow to glare at Alex.

“What? It’s true. No need to get your sad stench all over the living room.”

Morgan flopped their head back onto the pillow, sniffed, then hopped up angrily and stomped into the bathroom. Alex snickered again behind them.

Slamming the door behind them, Morgan turned around and blinked in surprise. The apartment tub was already filled with scalding water and had candles set up all around the border. Morgan’s favorite soft rock radio station was playing atop the toilet, and the room smelled of jasmine incense. After undressing and easing themself into the steaming tub, Morgan also noticed a pamphlet and a journal set delicately on the window sill next to them. The pamphlet was an informational brochure on the gem exhibit’s full tour, with handwritten notes on the flight times between locations. Morgan grinned, and set to work planning a new heist in the provided journal, memories of their recent chase slipping away in the steam.

In the other room, Alex smiled smugly to themself, pleased to cheer up their best friend. Although a henchman did help Alex find the flight times, Alex wrote everything in the brochure themself, and of course set up the hot bath. Resisting the urge to use x-ray vision, Alex still imagined the scene vividly as Morgan’s muscled shoulders hunched over the tub edge to write in the journal. Alex sheepishly wished Morgan would ask Alex to join them the bath, or, better yet, teleport them directly into the tub. At this thought, Alex blushed deeply into their tea, and quickly turned back on the TV for a distraction.
