Work Text:

City lights broke up the inky blues, blacks, and purples that painted the night sky. Nero watched them go by as he gazed out the window. Fortunately, this line bypasses by Ul'dah- it'll be a quiet ride on the way home. He'd rarely seen the city at night, even from a distance. The odd rattle of the train cars was as white noise, the only other noise was the soft breaths of his girlfriend.

She was sitting in the window seat, resting against him. She'd fallen asleep before they even left the Gold Saucer station, his red jacket served as a blanket. In her arms, she clung to a very large plush red chocobo, snuggling her face against it. Truth be told, he was jealous of the thing. The car jumped a little, and she mumbled something as she nuzzled further into the toy.

A pity she's missing the view, she's not like to see it again for some time. He looked around to the back of the car to check the toilet door. Open. He made a mental note of the other occupants in the car: a man reading the paper, facing the other way, a businesswoman texting furiously on her phone, and a teenage boy listening to music. There were no other passengers in front.

He leaned down and kissed the top of D'rena's head, noting that her hair still smelled of that lavender-scented shampoo sample she's made last for a week. He scratched behind her ear and looked back outside. If his sense of direction was as good as he thought, the distant lights of the Gold Saucer were long gone. They had mostly enjoyed each other's company, sampling a few things at the food court every few bells or so.

And of course, they played a few games, winning only a single prize. Even with D'rena's sharp aim, she lost by a second at the water gun game. With the last of their spare money, Nero tried his hand at the strongman game. With a mighty strike, he rung the bell and won a prize. He thought to take the sole model airship on the shelf, but thought better of it and chose a chocobo. Of course, he would not negotiate the color.

Soon, they'll arrive at Black Brush Station. And that means the train may get a bit louder. His fears were unfounded- a few more mutters boarded in the end. Nothing that'd disturb D'rena's sleep. It was still another stop or two before arriving at Revenant's Toll. Nero looked back to watch the darkness roll by outside the window. He hoped they could do this again soon. And next time, D'rena will win him a prize.

Notes:

I feel cheated for not writing the day at Gold Saucer, but I will certainly throw that on the pile for later.

And, yes, next time, D'rena wins a matching purple chocobo plush for Nero.
