Work Text:

“What the fuck are we doing here House?” Foreman asked as they looked around at all the people dressed in medieval clothing.

”Team bonding, apparently every department has to have a day out together to increase positive attitudes among peers,” House explained, “according to Cuddy it’s what the board wants and we can’t get out of it.”

”How come we’re doing this though instead of going bowling or something?” Chase asked.

”Because I thought it would be hilarious seeing you all in fancy dress,” House told them, turning to look at them all and pretending to admire their costumes, “pretty sure we wouldn’t have seen Foreman around in those times though,” Foreman rolled his eyes but otherwise ignored the comment.

”If it’s a department thing then why is Wilson here?” Cameron asked.

”Cuddy asked me to babysit House,” he replied.

”Apparently I can’t be trusted to look after the kids on my own so mommy had to come with us,” House said, “now you each get a dollar, go spend it wisely,” he joked. The three younger doctors walked off, knowing that they weren’t getting any money from House.

“This is so dumb,” Chase complained as they walked around.

”I dunno, some of this stuff is actually pretty cool,” Foreman commented as he marvelled the collection of swords that were on display.

”According to this, there’s going to be a dual in an hour,” Cameron said, showing them the leaflet she had picked up.

”Great so we get to watch nerds that are dressed up as knights pretend to hit each other,” Chase grumbled.

”Hey we’re here now, we may as well try to enjoy ourselves,” Cameron told him.

”Oh my!” They heard someone say behind them, they turned and saw a young man looking at Cameron, “you are the fairest maiden I have ever seen,” he said, he looked around and saw some wild flowers growing nearby. He picked one and handed it to her, “For you, my lady,” he got down on one knee and held it out to her.

”Thank you,” she said as she took the flower. Foreman snickered next to her and Chase glared at the man.

”She’s already taken,” Chase told him, putting an arm around Cameron’s shoulders.

”I’m not surprised, such a beautiful lady could have any man she pleases, are you sure this is the man you want?” The man asked. Chase took a step towards him and Cameron put a hand out and stopped him.

”Don’t Robert,” she warned.

”Stay away from her,” Chase said to him before the three doctors turned away.

”I challenge thee to a dual, the victor wins the maidens heart,” the man said. They all turned back around to face him.

”Really?” Chase questioned, “I’m not going to fight you for the woman I’m dating, because I’m already dating her.”

”Are you saying you wouldn’t fight for me Robert?” Cameron teased. Chase looked at her before looking at the stranger again.

”Fine,” he said.

“Do they serve any normal food here?” Wilson complained as he and House wandered around, “seriously, why can’t they serve burgers or hotdogs or something?”

”Because they didn’t have burgers or hotdogs in those times,” House responded, “have you seen these maces? I wonder how much they’re selling them for.”

”You are not getting a mace, the sword in the apartment is bad enough,” Wilson said.

”But that’s why we need the mace as well, if there is a burglar then only one of us would have a weapon, which means you’d have to cower behind me as I protect us,” House told him.

”Yes I’m sure any burglar would be terrified at the sight of a cripple with a sword,” Wilson replied.

”Well every time I get it out you seem worried,” House said, “and the sword too,” he winked. Wilson rolled his eyes.

”You seem to be mistaken, it’s not big enough to worry me,” the oncologist told him, “oh, and the sword too,” House tried not to smile at Wilson’s joke.

”Well played,” he said, “but for your hurtful comment I think you should buy me a mace.”

”Fine we can get the mace but I get to pick something out as well to go on display since I know you’re going to want this on one of our bedroom walls,” Wilson replied.

”Deal,” House said quickly, picking up one of the maces, “I want this one,” he swung it around slightly and Wilson stepped back.

”I can tell I’m going to regret this,” he mumbled. He watched for a little while longer as House limped around looking at everything in excitement before checking his watch, “House, there’s a dual starting in a five minutes, we should head over if you want to get there before it starts!” He called out.

”Coming honey!” House replied, they headed over to the stands and sat down. They spotted Foreman and Cameron at the front on the opposite side but couldn’t see Chase.

”Looks like we’ve lost one of the kids,” Wilson said.

”He’s probably in the bathroom,” House replied, “if not then great, it was started to get over crowded in the office,” Wilson was about to say something when two men walked into the middle of the makeshift stadium.

“I’d that Chase?” He questioned, looking at the blond who was now wearing armour and wielding a sword.

”Holy crap, it is,” House replied, “oh this is gonna be good.”

Chase breathed heavily as the man he was fighting lunged forward again, trying to knock him off his feet. He didn’t realise just how difficult it was to have a sword fight in full armour, it was heavy and he found himself tiring quickly. He brought his sword up to block the oncoming attack and tried to get a blow in himself but missed. He fell to the ground when he felt metal hit the side of his helmet, knocking him off balance. He laid there for a moment, trying to catch his breath and when he looked around he saw his opponent walking over to Cameron. The stranger got down on one knee in front of her and took a hand in his.

He didn’t stay there for long though as Chase got up from the ground, he stumbled over to where the man was on his knees and swung his sword into the man’s side. The man fell to the ground, dramatically holding his side.

”I yield!” The man called out and the crowd cheered. Chase stuck his arms in the air in celebration before dropping to the ground and laying on his back, panting heavily. He felt his helmet being pulled off and looked up into Cameron’s eyes. She pulled him into a kiss and the crowd cheered louder. When they broke apart he saw Foreman standing behind her.

”Well done,” he said, helping the younger man to his feet.

”Thanks,” Chase replied, Cameron began to help him remove the armour when House and Wilson came over.

”Do we even want to know how you ended up in a duel?” Wilson asked.

”Honestly, I’m still not entirely sure,” Chase replied.

”Well, you did us proud,” House said, smacking him on the back, “seemed a little cowardly though to hit a man when his back is turned.”

”Do you know how hard it is to fight with armour on?” Chase asked him, “seriously, grab some armour and find out.”

”So now you want to fight the disabled guy,” House commented and Chase gave him an unamused look.

”C’mon, let’s go grab some dinner,” Cameron said, “then you can let Cuddy know that we have successfully bonded as a team,” they all chuckled at this before leaving to find food.
