Work Text:
To say the night sky at Gibraltar was stunning on its own was an understatement. Not much light pollution was around, so the sky bloomed with stars, a wondrous array of blues and purples, lit with white. It wasn’t unusual to find agents working at all hours of the night, however, there were times which were notably quieter. The hours before dawn specifically.
It was at this time if you listened closely, you could hear old music playing on a speaker. If you tracked down the sound, a certain sniper could be found on the cliffs surrounding the base. It was her spot, and it was well known around that she was not to be disturbed. However, there were a small few who could come up and not get an ear lashing from the woman.
Footsteps can be heard coming up behind her, and it wasn’t hard to figure out whose they were. Steps that heavy belong to only one person on base. “It is late, Ana. I have been looking for you.”
Turning around enough to look over her shoulder, Ana craned her neck up to see the man’s face. “Well, you’ve found me.” A small smile offered to him. “Come sit with me, Reinhardt.”
She didn’t bother watching to see if he would. For a short moment, there was only the music playing off the radio that was next to her before it was interrupted with German grumbling, then, “You know my knees will fight it.” A glimpse of him letting his wall down around her. Yet as he speaks, she can also hear him moving and out of the corner of her eye, he sits next to her, giant in comparison.
“What is on your mind? You are never up here this long without a reason plaguing you.” His words are devastatingly gentle, a tone he often reserved for her and her alone.
Ana was quiet for a long while. Her voice was calm, although she was frowning. "It's Fareeha. I worry about her being here. She has no one her age no matter what base we are at."
Reinhardt made a noise of recognition at her words. "Do not fret too much. She has a village to raise her." He reached over, taking her hand in his. "Is there anything I can do to help you at this moment?"
She sighed softly, a faint smile crossing her face as she looked over at him. Placing her other hand on top of his, she nodded. "Distract me."
A smile of his own comes over the crusader's face. "You should've asked me sooner." Letting go over her hand briefly, he got himself off the ground without too much trouble before holding a hand down for her. Ana took it, easily being pulled up by her companion.
Grabbing the radio and switching it off, she stuffed it back into her coat pocket.
"Now come with me," Reinhardt said.
He led Ana on the short walk to the location he had in mind. Neither spoke, for the silence was comfortable between them. There was no pressure to fill the air with empty words.
It wasn't long until they got to their destination. He had taken them to the command center that overlooked the base. For what reason, Ana wasn't quite sure, but she trusted him. Letting go of her hand once more, he reached into her pocket and pulled out the radio she had put away. Without a word, he turned it on and set it down onto the desk.
He extended a hand to her and said, "May I have this dance, Lady Amari?"
She scoffed lightly at the title, but took his hand regardless. "I am hardly a lady anymore."
Reinhardt grinned, peering down at her as they slowly began to dance to the music. "You will always be a fine lady in my eyes."
Conversation trailed off as they moved in time together to the music. They simply danced. They danced, and danced some more.
Little words were exchanged between them as the night went on. Even as the sun began to rise over the water next to the base, they danced. If one were to look on, they would see two founding members, swaying to an old song from the 1940's.
Only once the sun was over the horizon did they stop. They just remained, holding each other.
"My sun and stars." She reached up, cupping his cheek tenderly.
He leaned into it. "The moon of my life."
