The Hardest Thing

Work Text:

“You deserve better.” The smooth, velvet-like voice spoke from behind you.

Timothee kissed you bare shoulder before rolling out of bed and beginning to dress. You follow, pulling a shirt over your head. You knew he was right. You did deserve better than an every once in a while hook up. Problem was, you loved him.

“I know.” You agreed. “But I’ll take what I can get.” You stand and finish dressing in the extravagant hotel room. You see him in the mirror watching you closely, his eyes giving away his thoughts. “You have to go.” You tell him knowing what he was about to say.

“I have to go to this dinner. We are meeting up with her parents.”

“Sounds nice.”

“Y/N,” Timothee starts but you stop him.

“It’s okay. I know you have to go.” You puckle your jeans and pull your hair from the back of your shirt. “I-”

Timothee stops you from speaking. “I need you to listen to me.”

“Okay.” You sit on the bed next to him. “What do we have to reschedule next weekend?”

He brings his hand to your cheek. “This would be so much easier if I didn’t have feelings for you.” You nod looking down. “But I do have feelings for you, deep ones and-” He sees a tear fall from your cheek. “Baby,” You move away from his touch. “Please don’t be this way. We both knew-”

“I know, I know.” You stood and wiped your face. “Knowing it’s coming doesn’t make it hurt any less though.”

“I know.” He stands before you. “You have to understand, she has stood by me through a lot. I can’t just walk away now.”

“I know. You don;t have to defend yourself. Not to me anyway. I was the one that overstepped.”

“No, you didn’t. I started this.”

“And now you're ending it.” You tell him. “I understand, Timmy.”

“Do you. I mean yeah what you and I do it great but with her-”

“What we’ve been doing is fun but you love her. You’re in love with her.”

“Yeah. I’m in love with her. I just don;t feel that way about you.”

You both finish dressing in silence and you gather your things. Timothee steals glances at you every now and then as you move about the room. When he walks you to the door he looks you in the eye.

“See you around.” You tell him with a kiss to his cheek.

Timothee remains stoic as tears escape down your cheeks. You walk out and down the hall without so much as a glance back. He shuts the door, leaning against it, sliding to the floor as tears begin to pour from his eyes.He was a better actor than you thought. He just let you walk away not knowing how in love with you he was.

He was dumb enough to get married at 19. He’d truly thought he had found the love of his life. He knew without a shadow of a doubt that he had found the woman he was gonna spend the rest of his life with. To bear his children to grow old with.

Until he saw you. Then he knew he made a mistake.

You had a few mutual friends and during a party one night he saw you, sitting on top the picnic table in a flowing brown dress and biker boots. The second he saw you he felt every ounce of breath leave his lungs. When he shook your hand and looked into your eyes he knew it was you, be damned the wedding band on his finger.

That was three years ago. His wife didn’t deserve the pain and heartbreak of his stupidity. You told him all the time how lucky he was to have her. You always spoke highly of her and he secretly hated how well you got along with her. You were too good. You deserved better than a man who couldn’t make you more than a secret.

He sent you away knowing you took his heart with you. That was his burden to bear.
