Game of the Heart

Summary:

So here they were. Standing in the water, just an inch away from each other. Shinya’s fingers wandered over his cheek and down to his chin. Anytime Guren could have backed away now. But Shinya’s touch gave him chills. His smell was pleasant. It was addicting. Just like his laugh.

-------

Guren is invited by his ex to his first student party after starting his studies in Tokyo. He isn’t very fond of the idea of attending a party at the mansion of the highly influential Hiiragi. At least until he meets a handsome stranger he immediately clicks with.

But never had Guren thought that he would end up making out with a stranger, nor that he would find himself in the midst of the Hiiragi rivalry games and a bet that will set his feelings to a test.

Chapter 1: An unexpected Encounter

Chapter Text

So this was the place she had told him to come this afternoon. And the building looked exactly how Guren had imagined it.

The description “house” party seemed to have been an understatement. This was a full-fledged mansion with two stories and a wing to the right. Two pillars framed the entryway which was made of dark wood. This housing was worthy of the offspring of the rich Hiiragi family who was universally known to be one of the most influential families in the whole Tokyo region.

From outside Guren could already hear the bass vibrations of the music. The big windows were illuminated in colorful lights that stood out against the approaching darkness of the night. This really wasn’t the typical student party. How privileged the Hiiragi must be to have an event in a mansion like this and on top on a Thursday night.

Guren tried not to think too much about the lectures he will be having tomorrow. He would try not to stay too long. But since Mahiru, the Hiiragi daughter herself, asked him to come here, he hadn’t been able to decline.

Who would have thought that he would run into her after just being back to Tokyo for about four weeks. Ever since he left after middle school and went back to Aichi their ways parted. Probably for the better as her family was never fond of the idea of them dating anyways and Guren always had always suspected she just had hit on him to piss off her father by choosing the grandson of the man that owed him a bunch of money for wrong business decisions.

Probably that was also half of the reason Guren was now here. His family was still paying off the debt his grandfather made with the Hiiragi. The amount was so high that Guren himself might work his whole life and be never able to return everything. And as long as the full amount of the money wasn’t returned it felt like he himself owed the Hiiragi. So coming to their party was the least thing he could do.

The front door wasn’t locked, so Guren just went inside and the full blast of loud electronic music collapsed on him. Already in the hallway there were several people standing in the corners chatting and drinking. From here he could also see what seemed to be the living room which was so crowded that he couldn’t even tell what the room was usually used for. At least this was where the music was coming from.

Guren decided that he might first get himself a drink. So he tried to find his way into the kitchen, wriggling through some groups of people. He wasn’t fond of the idea of chatting with some drunk folk over meaningless stuff or their studies. Especially if he couldn’t hear what they were saying anyways due to the way too loud music.

The fridge was brim filled with beer and bottles of booze. Guren took one bottle of beer and wondered how he could survive this student party with all the people he didn’t know and didn’t want to get to know. On top he had no idea where Mahiru was to prove he followed her invitation and came here. So where should he go now?

While Guren was looking around, his gaze stopped at the view outside the kitchen window. Behind the mansion was a small outside area with a pool and a garden behind. There weren’t many people outside probably due to the cloudy and windy weather and the cold temperatures that were rather unusual for April. At least it looked quiet out there.

After some looking around, Guren found a way outside. He walked down the stairs that lead down into the outside area. Though it was a lot less crowded here, there were still some guys sitting on the stairs, smoking and talking and laughing loudly. This was still too busy for Gurens favor, so he walked around the pool and found a bench surrounded by a hedge.

Due to the greenery, the music was a lot quieter and as all the people stuck close to the mansion, there was nobody else around. This seemed like the right place to sit down and drink his beer, so Guren did.

He closed his eyes and listened to the muffled beats, while he took a sip from his beer. So this was a student’s life, huh? He should have known what he was getting himself into when he decided to sign up for university.

Initially he hadn’t intended to leave Aichi again, but after one year after High School supporting his father at their family business, his mother had persuaded Guren to go studying. Simply because studying might get him a better job and thereby his family would be able to pay back the debt his family made.

And now he was back in Tokyo, knowing nobody here apart from his somewhat-ex that he wasn’t even sure he wanted to see today. They had just dated for a few weeks. Probably he shouldn’t have come to the party in the first place.

“That’s my hiding spot!”

A voice pulled Guren out of his thoughts and he looked up. In front of him stood a light haired man with a grin on his face and a bottle of beer in his hands. He was quite handsome, tall and slender. And he was looking right at Guren so he must be talking to him.

“Huh?” Guren let out a sound of confusion, “Yours?”

“Yeah, that’s where I’m usually hiding from the party.”

“And?”

“I assume you are hiding too, right? To be honest, I can relate. Not really a fan of those Hiiragi parties myself…”

“Then why are you here?”

“Well, I was invited and who says no to a Hiiragi, hm?”

“Huh… You’re a friend of one of the Hiiragi?” Guren had no idea who that man was. The only thing he knew was that it irritated him how informal he was with him when they had just met.

“Okay, you know what? We can share. Move over” the man said and without even waiting for Guren to move over, he sat down next to him.

“Hey!”

“There’s enough room for both of us, isn’t there?”

“Who says I want to share my hiding spot with you?” Guren grumbled. He had no idea what this guy was up to. But he won’t start being chummy with him just because he was.

But the man just laughed, “You’re funny. I’m Shinya by the way. What’s your name?”

“Ichinose Guren…”

“Guren, huh?” There was something about the way he pronounced his name that made him shiver. But Guren would not show that to him,

“Are we already that informal that you call me by my first name?”

“It’s a student party, isn’t it? You don’t seem like you’ve been to one before.”

“What makes you think that?”

“The way you looked at me when I called you Guren.” The smile on Shinya’s face got even wider, “You’re probably only used to family and friends calling you that, am I right?”

Guren didn’t reply. But indeed it felt strange for him that someone in Tokyo would call him by his first name. In the last four weeks he had only been called by his first name whenever he had had a call with his family at home. And when he had met Mahiru she had also called him by his last name even though they had dated in Middle School.

And now this strange guy came along, just calling him straight by his first name and acted as if they already knew each other. What was that guy even thinking?

Shinya grinned as he noticed he was right but he went over it and just continued, “You just started your studies this semester?”

“Mhm.” Guren wasn’t up for a conversation but somehow it didn’t bother him as much that Shinya was doing the talking. It didn’t make sense. He felt annoyed and at the same time he enjoyed his company.

“What are you studying?” Shinya asked, leaning back a bit and sipping on his beer.

“Education.”

“So you’re going to be a teacher? Don’t you think all the kids will be scared of you if you enter the room with that frown on your face?”

“You can leave if you want.”

“I’m just teasing,” Shinya slightly bit his lip and his voice suddenly went a lot more serious, “I think it’s great wanting to become a teacher. Doing something useful, you know? Did you always want to become a teacher?”

“Not particularly.”

“Then why did you decide to study?”

“It’s complicated.” Guren tried to avoid his gaze but Shinya fixed him with his eyes.

“Complicated, huh? Well, I think life is always complicated. So what’s your reason?”

Guren didn’t think it was smart to tell a random guy at a Hiiragi party that his own family was in debt to the Hiiragi. But at the same time Shinya’s question was so honest that Guren wanted to tell him the truth. So he settled for an answer that was at least half true,

“My family is in debt and I want to make money to return it.”

“That’s honorable of you. But don’t you think other jobs are way better paid?”

“I at least want to have a job I might enjoy.”

“So you like kids?”

“I never said that.”

Shinya chuckled. It was like he was looking right through Guren. Whatever he said or even if he didn’t say anything, Shinya seemed to know what he wanted to say.

The longer they were talking the more comfortable Guren got with Shinya’s way of being too frank with him. The uncomfortable feeling that Guren initially had when Shinya had showed up was already gone. It didn’t even annoy him anymore that Shinya was teasing him from time to time. Surprisingly it was so easy to talk to him. It almost felt like he already knew that guy for a long time and didn’t just meet a few minutes ago.

Shinya was studying at the economic faculty. Something with math, at least this was what Guren remembered. He liked a lot of serieses Guren thought nobody else had watched and he seemed to be into video games too. They talked a lot about a series they both watched and about some new games that Shinya lately enjoyed.

The way Shinya was smiling and laughing was addicting. Whenever he was talking, it never disappeared from his lips. His smile was giving Guren a good feeling and he caught himself from time to time returning the smile as well.

At some point Shinya stopped for a second and looked up.

“What is it?” Guren asked.

“I think I was just hit by a raindrop.”

“You think it’s going to rain?”

“Probably” Shinya shrugged his shoulders, “Do you mind? I’m not going back inside anyways. Don’t care for that dumb party.”

“Well, me neither.” Their eyes met for a second. It wasn’t until now that Guren didn’t notice how blue Shinya’s eyes were. But then Shinya smiled and put his hand on top of the opening of his bottle.

“...as long as it doesn’t rain into my beer.” Shinya joked.

“Then you’ll better drink it.”

“Now that you say it. I totally forgot to drink my beer! Seems like I got very distracted by you.”

“Yea” Guren chuckled and lifted up the bottle he had been holding in his hands all the time. It was in fact still half full. Almost as full as it was the moment Shinya had arrived.

“See! We really have to drink that before it’s only water from the rain.”

“That’s a dumb excuse...”

“But a logical one” Shinya smiled and lifted his bottle, “Cheers, Guren! To a good evening and an even better evening to come!”

“Cheers.”

They both emptied their bottles. Guren initially only wanted to drink a big sip. But as Shinya started emptying his in one go, Guren felt challenged to do the same. He would not lose against that guy.

After they drank up, Shinya giggled but then became quiet, letting his gaze wander. It was the first moment of silence between them since they started talking. And now they were both just sitting next to each other, holding their beer in their hands and looking at the pool in front of them, while the rain slowly got heavier. Raindrops were falling all around them and into the pool and Guren didn’t even mind his clothes getting wet.
In the silence, Guren listened to the regular calm sound of the raindrops. Only now Guren noticed how turbulent his body felt. He was heated up from all the talking and coming to rest made him realize how tense his muscles were. His heart was beating a bit faster and his mouth felt dry from all the talking. He hadn’t talked that much in a long time.

And yet, at the same time, he felt relaxed and content. Guren had never expected the evening to be any fun. Or that he would even enjoy it. But this didn’t turn out as bad as expected. Who would have guessed that Guren would find someone here that was fun to talk to? That he would enjoy teasing and laughing with?

Guren would have expected that the party was full of followers of the Hiiragi. People that want to increase their own reputation and would only talk about superficial stuff. Yet Shinya was different. He didn’t seem to care much about the Hiiragi or status and was interested in very similar stuff as Guren. He was a strange guy though. He could talk endlessly. But Guren somehow still enjoyed his company.

However Guren had no idea why Shinya was at a party of the Hiiragi in the first place. If he didn’t like to be here, why did he come? Was he invited as well? As far as Guren remembered he didn’t answer that question yet.

“Hey, Shinya? I was wondering, why have you been invi- ”

But Guren couldn’t finish his sentence, as Shinya turned his head and interrupted him,
“On a scale from 1 to 10, how crazy are you?” The smile on Shinya’s lips widened.

“Huh? Where did this come from?”

“I have an idea…!”

Guren puffed, “You’re a 10…”

“Hahaha. I was asking about you. I just thought… now that I’m wet from the rain anyways, we could also go for a swim in the pool, couldn’t we?”

“It’s still spring?!”

“And? Come on, Guren! Don’t tell me you are afraid of some cold water? ”

“I’m not!”

“Then, what are you waiting for?”

With the wide grin still on his face Shinya stood up, took Guren’s hand and pulled him with him. Somehow Guren didn’t resist and let himself get pulled the two meters towards the pool.

Quickly Shinya took off his hoodie, pants, shoes and socks, took a running start and jumped into the pool with a big splash. When he came up his hair was now completely wet. Shinya shoved the strands of hair back and laughed loudly. Then he turned around and looked up to Guren.

“You’re coming?' It’s not cold at all!”

“You’re definitely a 10…” Guren muttered.

“And? Are you coming into the pool with a 10?”

“Hn…” If there was one thing, it was that Guren couldn’t let that guy mock him for not being spontaneous enough to do such a crazy thing. With a short look Guren checked the stairs up to the mansion. They were empty by now. All the people that had gone inside because of the rain. So at least nobody would see him doing something stupid like this.

Growlingly Guren unbuttoned his shirt and left the t-shirt underneath on. Next the shoes and socks. Guren felt that Shinya was watching him and somehow this made him nervous. But he would not let him notice that. When Guren took off his pants, he caught Shinya’s glance. He was smiling at him and Guren smiled back. If that guy wanted a challenge, he should get it.

Guren sat down on the edge of the pool and dipped his legs into it. Then he pushed himself off the edge and dived into the water. The water was hip-height here. And fucking cold. Guren gasped for air. Whatever Shinya had been thinking, he had no idea why one would enjoy this.

“You have to dive fully in!” Shinya laughed and came over to him. Without a warning he grabbed him by the shoulders, kicked his legs with a quick movement, so that Guren lost his balance. He fell backwards into the water and his head dipped fully in.

For a second he had fully lost his orientation before he came up again. Guren spluttered out the water he accidentally swallowed,

“Shinya?! What’s wrong with you?!”

But Shinya just laughed loudly. It made Guren even more furious.

“Come here! You will get that back!”

Guren tried to grab him to push him down as well. But Shinya probably knew that this was coming. Even though Guren tried his best, Shinya managed to keep his balance and only dropped partly into the water. It was the beginning of a fight who would get dropped more into the water. Even though they both already were fully wet, they were splashing the water around and trying to pull the other under.

But it wasn’t easy. Even though Guren had been training Kendo for almost his whole life, Shinya seemed to know some martial arts too. And he was a lot more muscular than Guren had expected. He couldn’t only see it through the black t-shirt that was sticking to his chest but Guren could also feel it, when he grabbed his arms and back.

Guren felt that his anger slowly turned into excitement. This wasn’t about taking revenge anymore but about winning their fight. Gradually Guren was about to get the upper hand. He was wrestling with Shinya, trying to push him over, when Shinya caught his blow with his hand. He intertwined their fingers so that Guren could not pull back his hand.

The next blow. This time with Guren’s free hand. But Shinya caught that as well, again intertwining their fingers. And leaving Guren no chance to pull back.

“Got you!” Shinya laughed, watching Guren trying unsuccessfully to free his hands, “Should we agree on a tie?”

The tension of his grip faded but he kept his fingers around Guren’s hands.

"Huh? You’re giving up?” Guren was breathing heavily. He hadn’t even noticed how exhausting the fight had been. Cold air filled his lungs. But yet he couldn’t stop smiling.

It was still raining, but not as intense as before. And by now Guren didn’t even notice the rain anymore. He was wet all over and it rather felt like a light shower on his skin.

Shinya’s face was as red as his own probably was. He was panting, mixed with laughing. But his blue eyes were gleaming in the dim light. He looked like he was really enjoying himself and Guren liked seeing Shinya that way. There was something about his cheerfulness that made Guren feel happy as well.

When Shinya noticed that Guren was watching him, his expression changed into a smile and their eyes met. This smile was different from his usual grin. It felt warm and kind and made him look even more handsome.

There it was again. That silence. But this time Guren felt his body tighten. His heart was pounding and his senses sharpened. He could feel the light touch of Shinya’s hand on his, while their fingers stayed intertwined with each other. Guren didn’t dare to pull back. Weirdly it felt good, even though it made him nervous somehow. Shinya’s eyes wandered over his face, down to his lips and up again, trying to catch his glance.

It was Shinya that first broke the silence,

“I’d rather want to kiss you right now.”

Guren’s chest felt so tight, he couldn’t breath. Shinya couldn’t be serious, could he? He must be fooling with him. To make him look even more ridiculous.

“You’re joking, right?” Guren muttered under his breath.

“I’m serious,” Shinya moved one step closer and gently squeezed his hand tighter.

He was so close now. Guren could feel his body warmth against the cold air. His own lips were tingling. But he could not take his eyes off Shinya. The way he looked at him and the firm tone of his voice made Guren freeze. Why? Why was he doing this? Probably he would be backing away laughing every minute.

Carefully Shinya put his hand on Guren’s cheek. On his overheated face the touch felt cold but soft. Somehow the touch gave Guren comfort and his mind went blank.

“Can I kiss you?” Shinya asked again in a low voice.

But Guren didn’t know what to reply. Somehow Guren didn’t want Shinya to pull away now. Even when he was fooling with him. Even when he would back away every minute and probably laugh about him. This felt nice. And slowly Guren felt like maybe Shinya actually wanted to kiss him… But wasn’t he a guy?

So here they were. Standing in the water, just an inch away from each other. Shinya’s fingers wandered over his cheek and down to his chin. Anytime Guren could have backed away now. But Shinya’s touch gave him chills. His smell was pleasant. It was addicting. Just like his laugh.

With one finger, he gently pulled Guren’s chin towards him. Guren followed, exactly knowing what was about to happen. But he wanted to let it happen. At the leatests when their lips touched, he knew it was worth it.

It sent a hot shiver down Guren’s spine. Shinya’s lips were cold but incredibly soft. Guren closed his eyes and focused on that warm feeling that spread all throughout his body. So this was what it felt like.

But Shinya’s lips didn’t just stay on his. Gradually he started removing his lips from time to time and gently kissing him again over and over again and running his lips over his. Each time, their lips opened a bit more and they got closer to each other. Until Guren could feel the tip of Shinya’s tongue tenderly brushing his lips.

This was going way too slow in Guren’s opinion. Shinya kept teasing him, making him wait. Briskly Guren put his hands on Shinya’s cheeks and pulled his head closer. Guren opened his lips and pushed his tongue forward.

He could feel Shinya jerk. But seemingly it had been a bit too brisk, because Shinya broke the kiss shortly afterwards.

“Not so fierce,” Shinya panted but hurried to get his lips back on Guren’s and thereby almost knocked him over. But Guren could keep his balance.

Now Shinya set the pace. Cautiously Shinya put his arms around his shoulders and embraced him tightly. His chest and hips were now touching his. Guren could feel the firm grip of Shinya’s arms around his shoulders and it made him want to feel him even more.

And even though it felt intense, it was incredibly gentle. Shinya knew just how to touch him in the right places with his tongue and lips to make Guren shiver. Kissing him felt so good. His whole body felt like it was on fire. But in an incredibly pleasant way.

This just simply felt right. Reluctantly Guren’s hands now moved away from Shinya’s face and down around his waist. Over and over they kissed each other while they were holding each other in their arms. And slowly Guren felt like he was understanding how to kiss him back properly so that he could make him shiver.

Slowly Shinya’s hands now wandered down Guren’s back and down to his ass. He gently squeezed it but in a way that tingled. A lot. Guren let out a squeaking sound. It must have been so loud that laughingly Shinya broke the kiss.

Guren opened his eyes. The unpleasant feeling of embarrassment made his cheeks feel hot. Did he really just squeak like a little girl?!

“You’re cute…” Shinya purred, carefully moving his hand over Guren’s ass to not tickle him again and giving him a seductive look.

It wasn’t until now Guren fully comprehended the situation he was in. He was standing right in the middle of the pool of the Hiiragi in the rain and making out with a guy he just met. A man. Shinya was a man. He was kissing a dude.

He had just been caught up so deep in the moment that he hadn’t even thought about this. But he remembered now that he saw Shinya in front of him. In what kind of trouble had he gotten himself into? How could he have been so stupid?! If anyone found out -

Shinya bent forward to kiss him again but Guren backed away and resolved their embrace quickly.

“I have to go somewhere -” Guren muttered quickly and turned on his heel. As fast as he could, he waded through the water, climbed out of the pool and grabbed his clothes

“Hey, Guren!” he heard Shinya calling. But Guren didn’t turn around and quickly headed up the stairs to the mansion. His heart was still pounding loudly in his chest.

“Guren!”

Fuck! What if anybody had seen that?! He was a dead man.
