“Just be quiet for a minute, okay?” Chiaki cooed softly, “You’ll get to meet him soon enough. ♪”
Chiaki gave one last smile to the small kitten hidden in their bathroom, pushing himself onto his feet. He couldn’t help but be proud of his gift choice. It was Christmas, and Chiaki had decided on the tiny cat to give to Rei. After all, what was a better gift for the love of his life than their own adorable pet? They had talked about possibly adopting pets in the future, after all. Their apartment was pet-friendly, too. What could be better than that?
Giving a small wave to the kitten, Chiaki finally made his way to the living room, pushing the door open to see his fiancé lounging on the couch. On Chiaki’s entrance, Rei glanced up with a smile.
“It’s nice of you to join me, finally. You left this old man waiting…” Rei gave a teasing pout, opening his arms to the brunette.
The hero left out a playful huff, but smiled nonetheless as he entered his embrace. “You’re only a year older than me, silly…”
“Am I? I suppose my memory isn’t as it used to be…”
Chiaki merely giggled, rolling his eyes. “Mm… Well, shouldn’t we get to giving presents soon? I can't wait for you to see what I got you!!”
Rei chuckled at Chiaki’s eager grin, raising an eyebrow, “Oh? Well… I think my gift might end up surpassing yours in the end.”
“I doubt it!! You’re going to adore my gift! I know it! I’ll even give you the benefit of going first!”
Rei hummed, “If you say so. Allow me to blow you away.”
The self-proclaimed vampire pressed a small kiss to his lover’s forehead before releasing him, pushing himself to his feet.
“Okay, now close your eyes, dear. ♡”
Chiaki’s cheeks flushed red, but he obliged, shutting his eyes. He could hear Rei's footsteps, followed by a bit of shuffling. He heard a small, inaudible comment from Rei before he heard footsteps again, signaling the ravenette’s return.
“Open your eyes, hero. ♪”
As his eyes blinked open, he let out an involuntarily gasp, eyes widening.
There, in Rei’s hands, was a small puppy—a golden retriever, he thinks at a glance.
“You— A puppy? Really ?” Chiaki couldn’t hold back the excitement in his voice, childlike wonder seeping into his eyes.
“Mhm. ♪ We had talked about pets, had we not? I thought now was as good a time as any.”
At that, Chiaki froze for a moment, his face contorting into shock. “Oh my god. No way. No Fucking Way .”
Rei’s eyes widened at his sudden mood change, along with the uncharacteristic swear. “Chiaki? Is everything alright?”
“Yes— I just— Oh my god. Just, hold on—“ Chiaki suddenly pushed himself to his feet. A nervous Rei was left in his wake as he quickly made his way back to their bathroom.
After a moment, however, Chiaki emerged, the small black kitten in his arms.
“We um… We both had the same idea, apparently…”
Now it was Rei’s turn to look shocked, before he burst into pleasant laughter. Chiaki couldn’t help but laugh along, sitting back down on the couch alongside him.
“I suppose we really are two peas in a pod, aren’t we?” Rei chimed as his laughter died down, leaning to press a kiss to his fiancé’s temple, “We are so similar, yet so different. Yet another reason I love you so. ♡”
Chiaki felt his face flush again, but he merely smiled, nodding. “I love you, too..! Ah, here!” He held out the kitten to his lover, and the two carefully swapped the small pets into each other’s hands.
“Ah, she’s so soft, isn’t she?” Rei smiled, placing the kitten gently into his lap. “What’s her name?”
“She doesn’t have one yet… I wanted you to do the honors!!”
“Ah, so thoughtful. ♪ … Hm… How about… Andromeda?”
“Andromeda… I think it’s pretty… and of course you’d pick such an extravagant name,” Chiaki laughed, leaning onto Rei.
“And? What about your little guy there?” Rei hummed, stroking Andromeda gently.
“Hm… I um… Hold on I’m thinking…”
Watching his fiancé’s face scrunch up in concentration, Rei couldn’t help the small laugh that escaped his lips.
“… Ah!! I’ve got it!!!” Chiaki exclaimed excitedly, grinning up at Rei.
“Oh? And just what is his name, then?”
“Jupiter!!” Chiaki grinned proudly, bringing the small retriever to eye level, “It fits with your sister’s space motif. ♪ You love it, don’t you, buddy?” The puppy licked his face in return, earning a loud laugh from the brunette.
Rei couldn’t help but fondly smile as he watched the two.
Bringing Jupiter back to his chest, Chiaki looked back up at Rei again, returning Rei’s smile with a huge grin.
“I still can’t believe we had the exact same idea… What are the odds??” Chiaki mused, tilting his head.
“As they say, soulmates have a special connection.” Rei remarked with a sly smile, “We’re no exception, of course. ♪”
“You’re so cheesy … I think I might die.”
“Nooo, that would leave me but a lonely widower… with only a cat and a dog to my name… Oh woe is me…” Rei dramatically leaned onto Chiaki—who was still leaning on him—, a hand placed dramatically on his forehead.
Chiaki stifled a giggle. “You’re so overdramatic .”
“Hm? And you’re not?” Rei teased. Seeing Chiaki did not intend to respond, he lifted his head again with a hum. Interlacing their fingers together, the ravenette brought the brunette’s fingers to his lip to kiss lightly. “Mmm… I love you.”
Holding Jupiter to his chest with one hand, the hero smiled wider in return, quickly leaning in to peck Rei on the lips. “I love you, too!! and I love our little guys… ♪” he chirped.
“Ah, this old man is already being replaced so soon… I can feel it…”
“Oh, hush you.”
“If you say so. ♪”
With a sly yet fond smile, Rei leaned forward, ‘hushing’ them both as he caught Chiaki’s lips in a more prolonged, sweet kiss.
And if they shared many more that day, who’s to say? That’s between them and their new little family.
