A Good Day

Summary:

Years after Ash decides to join Eiji at the airport, they live together and are happy. They have good and bad days, but this was a good morning.

Notes:

I saw some sad Banana Fish fan-art, so I did the only rational thing; writing a fluffy fanfic.
Enjoy

Work Text:

Eiji blinked his eyes open against the sunlight streaming in through a window. He felt Ash’s leg shift over his calf and smiled, moving in closer so that his head was against the other’s chest. He closed his eyes again when he received a kiss to the top of his head and a sleepy mumbled, “Good morning.”

He sighed deeply, losing himself in the warm feeling of Ash’s body against his own, pillows and blankets piled all around them.

Yesterday had been a hard day, Ash’s brain not letting him forget what he’d gone through in America. Those days make Eiji sad, it's so hard watching Ash fall apart, but he’s always there to comfort him. Holding Ash and rubbing his back, combing through his hair with his fingers, placing gentle kisses to his face and hands all help, and they get through them together.

Now, he tilted his head to look at Ash’s face. His breathing was slow and relaxed, not harsh and shallow as it had been the day before. He had a slight smile playing at his lips, even in his sleepy state, which was a good sign. Ash reached down to grasp Eiji’s hand, intertwining their fingers together.

As much as Eiji was enjoying this, he was starting to get hungry, and knew from experience that a hangry Ash was not the most pleasant to deal with.

“Alright, I’m gonna go make breakfast.” He chuckled at Ash’s grunt of disapproval before slipping out of the bed, sucking in a breath at the sudden loss of warmth.

He hummed a random song that was playing on the radio as he started making breakfast. He made Ash’s favorite; dried horse mackerel with Japanese radish, natto with green onions, - which Ash had slowly warmed up to, and now enjoyed as much as Eiji did - rice, miso soup, and boiled spinach with bonito flakes.

He set everything up at their dinner table, untying his apron and returning to their bedroom.

“Ash, I made food.”

He smiled fondly, he could see Ash’s bedhead and grumpy pout peeking out from the top of the covers. Food obviously hadn’t worked as motivation to get him out of bed since he’d made no move to get up, so he tried a different tactic.

“I can’t exactly give you a kiss if you're all tangled up in the blankets, now can I?”

That did the trick as Ash rose from the mattress, his sleep shirt sliding down his arms when he stretched and yawned. Eiji did the same, slightly annoyed that yawns were so contagious.

Ash put his arms over Eiji’s shoulders. “I got up, can you kiss me now ?”

He was happy to oblige, holding Ash’s middle close as he leaned in. Kissing didn’t give them the same rush of feelings it had when they’d first done it. It was different. Instead of speeding their heartbeats up and making them nervous, it calmed them down with the feeling of familiar intimacy.

Eiji pulled away to place a quick peck on the tip of his nose, enjoying the way Ash’s eyes tried to follow his lips between them. Then he grabbed him by the hand and led him through their kitchen and to the dining room.

After they sat down, Ash placed his hands together as Eiji did the same, “Itadakimasu.”

Though he’s had this very same meal countless times - making it himself often since they both contributed to cooking - he always acts as if he’s never tasted anything like it.

His small sounds of delight and the hearts that practically appear in his eyes, Eiji wonders, as he sometimes does, how he could have possibly ended up with someone as amazing and adorable and-

Safe to summarize, Eiji is deeply in love with the man sitting across from him and very happy that the feelings are reciprocated.

He forgot to turn off the radio when he was finished cooking, and the moment they both realized what song was playing, they locked eyes with matching expressions of joy on their faces. It was their song, the one they cleaned and sung to, the one they laughed and kissed to, the one they were going to play at their wedding.

Ash extended his hand, and Eiji quickly took it, pressing themselves together as they moved across the room. Their dancing was not the best, but neither of them cared, only laughing when toes were stepped on and tables were knocked into. They were each imperfect, but they loved each other with their entire hearts.

A lot of days were hard, but today? Today was a good day.

Notes:

Eiji made the same breakfast as he did in episode 12.
