Work Text:

It had to be perfect. Steve couldn’t have the best day of his life be ruined by anything. Not his parents, not himself, not anything. Steve spent all his free time planning the day making sure everything was just as he and Eddie had discussed.

Steve had been on the phone with the flower shop for the better part of the evening and he was getting frustrated that it wasn’t working out how he was envisioning it. There was a month until the wedding and the flower shop had just called him to notify him that the flowers he had ordered wouldn’t be ready for the date of the wedding. After hours of calling different shops to see if any other shop was able to do it for them.

Steve felt his fiancés arms wrap around his waist from behind him and kiss his neck softly. He sighed and hung up the phone.

“Steve come on it’s late we can figure our the dumb flowers tomorrow” Eddie mumbled into his neck. Steve turned to look at Eddie.

“It’s not dumb Eddie I need this to be perfect for us” Steve sighed and Eddie just shrugged

“I couldn’t care less about the flowers, I just want to marry you” Eddie said and Steve frowned at him.

“Well I care about the flowers if it’s not perfect it’s just going to give my parents more excuse to complain if it doesn’t look nice” Steve ran his hands over his face.

Eddie crossed his arms and looked at Steve “I still don’t understand why your parents are invited. It’s not like they even like me or give a shit about the fact you’re even getting married” he complained once again as he had before a few times.

“They are my parents Eddie I want them there I don’t give a shit what you think they feel” Steve said his frustrations coming out in a way he wish they didn’t

“Right because I’m just imagining the years of neglect you experienced I’m so sorry for that, Steve” Eddie said sarcastically

“Well they finally want to be here for me so sorry for being hopeful I guess. You’re so fucking negative sometimes Eddie” Steve said his voice rising towards the end of his sentence and Eddie looked shocked at him.

“I’m being fucking realistic Steve they didn’t show up to the engagement party, when’s the last time they sent you something for your birthday?” Eddie said his voice was shaky.

“Fuck off eddie stop acting like you know everything about them.” Steve said, rolling his eyes at the other.

“Right, I don't know them since they never have made any effort to meet me. This is such a stupid argument Steve why did flowers off all things set this off” Eddie sighed

“Maybe because I’m putting in all this effort for our wedding and you’ve barely done anything” Steve shot back and Eddie looked at him with hurt in his eyes.

“I’ve been working hard for his wedding too Steve” Eddie said bitterly

“Oh right it must be so challenging for you to ask your fucking loser friends to play their shitty music” Steve laughed condescendingly and Eddie looked pissed.

“God you’re such an asshole sometimes this is my wedding too I might not care what fucking venue we have but I should be allowed something that I actually care about which is my fucking music. You know how much music means to me” Eddie said his emotions overwhelmed him and he began tearing up.

“Oh so I can’t make comments about your music but you can make as many comments you want about mine?” Steve laughed dryly.

“Those we’re all jokes I didn’t realize they bothered you, okay? I’m sorry.” Eddie said weakly

Steve rolled his eyes at Eddie “Sure they are jokes Eddie because that’s way more convenient for you then admitting anything”

Eddie furrowed his eyebrows and scoffed “You’re just being a jerk to be a jerk now I’m going to stay with Wayne tonight I don’t want to be near you if you’re acting like this” he said sorrowfully before going to leave the room.

“Yeah do what you’re best at and run away like you always do, Munson.” Steve called out at Eddie when he began to leave and Eddie froze before turning to him and looking at Steve tears streaming down his cheeks now.

“Fuck you Steve. All you ever care about is yourself,” He choked out and glared at him, his mind racing with thoughts before he looked at his hand and removed the ring Steve proposed to him with. He stepped to Steve and grabbed his hand forcing the ring into his hand before turning away and leaving the room to pack his bags.

Steve didn’t know what happened those next few days; he remembered waking up to a call from Robin asking why Eddie told her the wedding was off. He remembers crying a lot. He also remembers each painful call to everyone he invited telling them the wedding was off. He can recall every word of pity said to him and the tears on his pillowcase.

A year later he decided it was time to move on. He met a few people never really dating any of them for too long.

It had been 2 years and 7 months since Eddie and Steve last spoke, not that Steve was counting other than the fact that he definitely thought back to that day a lot.

He was currently dating a very nice woman he had met through Nancy. He had been dating her for a couple of months so far and he was happy with her. He knew that in time he would probably love her the way he was made to love people. Maybe she was finally the one.

“Are you sure it's okay that I invited Eddie?” Robin asked as Steve helped her set up the party she was holding at her house. He shrugged.

“You already invited him so it doesn’t matter. I can be civil around my ex just look at me and Nancy” Steve said as he taped up the decorations.

“That’s not the same you weren’t engaged to Nancy and you fell back in love with Nancy after being near her for like a day” Robin said as she watched him do the work.

“Well I’m not like that anymore Rob, plus I’m dating Dahlia so nothing will happen” Steve sighed and looked at Robin who looked at her clearly not believing him.

After the rest of the day of decorating the guest started arriving Steve stood talking to Max when he saw Eddie enter the room at the corner of his eye. Steve felt a bit breathless at the sight of him. His hair was a bit shorter than last time he saw him and he definitely had more tattoos. Then Eddie made eye contact with Steve and he froze up until he felt a hand intertwine with his and he looked at see Dahlia beside him clinging to his arm

“Hey Babe got you some beer” She said and kissed his cheek he gave her a small smile and looked back to where Eddie was to see he vanished from that spot he tried to hide his disappointment and went back to talking with Max.

At some point in the night Dahlia pulled Steve away from everyone.

“I want to tell you something Steve.” She said and held both his hands looking up at him with a smile. Steve gave her a faint smile scared of what was going to happen.

“I love you” she said and Steve instantly frowned before he could stop himself.

“I’m sorry Dahlia I don’t think I’m there yet… or that I ever will actually be…” Steve said and she frowned for a moment before looking at him and nodding

“Thanks for being honest with me Steve” She sighed and kissed his cheek. “Have a good party” she said before leaving and Steve sank to the floor and sighed. He sat there in silence for several minutes until a voice spoke up.

“Damn Harrington what a heartbreaker you are. Just saw your girlfriend leave looking fairly upset guessing you two broke up” A voice said and Steve looked up to see Eddie entering the empty bedroom. He sat across from Steve and Steve nodded.

“Yeah.. you know me…heartbreaking the hearts of anyone who loves me,” He said dryly and Eddie looked at Steve.

“Oh I sure do. Way too familiar with the Harrington heartbreak experience” Eddie said and ran his hands through the carpet.

Steve didn’t know what to say he just mumbled out an apology

“I know you are Steve, that's why I came.” Eddie looked at him, his eyes soft with emotion.

“You came for me?” Steve asked with a smirk coming onto his lips. Eddie fondly rolled his eyes.

“Not just for you Harrington I also wanted to see my friends but yeah, I wanted to see you” Eddie said looking down at his lap “I assumed you kind of did too since Robin invited me and I know she wouldn’t have without your permission” He smiled

“I regret everything I said to you, Eddie.” Steve said and Eddie looked back at him again.

“I don’t, I’m glad I left and experienced other relationships. It just solidified that what I need is you. Now I wish we didn’t wait 3 years to meet again but at least it happened” Eddie said and Steve smiled at him. He nodded.

“I missed you, even if you’re fucking weird sometimes.” Steve chuckles. Eddie got up and moved beside Steve cupping his jaw in his hand.

“Steve, do you want to get married? But not a big wedding with everyone just us getting eloped with the people closest to us.” Eddie asked and received a nod in answer. The two smiled at each other before their lips met for a kiss. Steve’s hands entered his hair before pulling away from the kiss.

“I want to marry you so bad Eddie I love you more than I ever thought was possible even after all this time it’s the same,” Steve said, his forehead pressed against Eddie’s.

“We should probably go back to the party before they come to find us” Eddie said and got up pulling Steve up with him then joining everyone.

Steve found Robin talking to Nancy and he tapped her shoulder. She looked at him and gave him a frown. Nancy left to give them space as they talked.

“I saw Dahlia leave a while ago. What happened?” She asked and he sighed

“She said she loved me and I told her I didn’t feel the same so she left. Then Eddie found me and we talked.” He said and Robin looked at him squinting at him as he talked.

“And remember when you said not to be weird about him being here and everything?” Steve asked and Robin frowned

“What did you say to my guest Stephen?” She asked crossing her arms

“Well I may have told him that I still loved him after he said he came to the party to see me and how he missed me and we decided to get married again.” Steve explained with a smile before Robin grinned and excitedly smacked Steve’s arm lightly.

“You dumbasses I’m so happy but also wow Steve you see this guy for the first time in 3 years and you immediately get engaged again?” Robin mocked him and Steve rolled his eyes at her.

“Obviously it’s not going to be immediately but it’s just gonna be us getting eloped with the people closest to us there” Steve said and Robin hugged him.

“You idiots better not screw this up again.” Robin whispered.

5 months after the reunion they finally decided they waited long enough to get married. They invited Wayne, Robin and their kids that were technically adults now but would always be their kids. They eloped then took everyone out for dinner and it was perfect for Steve to be able to be with the man he loves and his family.
