Summary:

This book is now (unfortunately) abandoned because i couldn't be bothered to edit it so i've rewritten it, you can find it on my page.

Izuku had never felt involved in anything, he was small and insignificant from the moment he was born. It wouldn't help that when he was younger he couldn't control his transformations. That's why it was such a shock when he was asked by none other than the king himself for a personal quest. A quest! How could he say no?
So despite his mothers worries, he set off, determined to retrieve the sword of OneForAll, because after all, the king would want it for good right!...right?

Chapter Text

Story's can start off in various ways, the character waking up, going for a walk lost in thoughts, or the most popular throwing the characters into immediate action, with fighting and dragons and fire. Not this story, no. Our story starts off a little bit different than the rest.

Our story starts off in a small town, actually a town is pushing it, a small village. The village was named Viermur and although it was small, every town in the kingdom of Toshironi had a backstory to its name. This small village was named after a brave soldier who fought in the first war, a war where allies turned to enemy's and enemy's turned to allies.  A small cottage sat on the outskirts of the village, not far enough to be alone but not close enough to be included, except the morning comers for breakfast. That was how the Midoriya's liked it. The Midoriya family have been bakers since the early days, people from all over come to try their famous breads and pastries. It was how they were taught as a young child, but Izuku wanted something more.

Izuku wanted adventure and quests, to be the kings messenger at best. Izuku wanted to go out and see the world that he lived in. Don't get him wrong, he loves his mother and the life that she brought him up in, he knows how to cook an how to bake. Izuku knows the basics of hunting and training. He knows how to survive.

But he wanted more.
Izuku wanted to live.

Unfortunately, not much of that was possible for Izuku. His father had run off before he could explain and left Inko when she had told him about izuku. A human boy with bunny ears. Hisashi was a shifter, a rare one at that. After the war, shifters were banned from most kingdoms, and whilst the Toshironi kingdom was a safe place for them, shifters tended to keep to the shadows. Not many were accepting of their animalistic tendencies.

Because of this Izuku was half human and half rabbit shifter, most of his traits came from his mother and therefore couldn't fully transform into a bunny. Inko had no clue how to take care of a baby shifter, and read every novel she could get her hands on.

She still didn't fully understand Izuku, but he was her son, and she would do anything for him. Because of this, Izuku had to figure out his own way of controlling his transformations. Not having many friends as a child gave him lots of time to study about his species and other species alike.

But Izuku still longed for adventure, no matter how much he loved his hometown.

His mind would be racing at night, of dreams and ambitions that not even his imagination could take him on. The countries he could visit, towns and cities he could explore.

Every morning however It would be the same thing, collecting the berries for the pies, vegetables and fruit from the garden. His mother needed help, she couldn't run it all on her own.

However far his mind wandered, he couldn't leave his home. Could he?

So that was when he got requested to go and see the king his mother almost passed out from the words on the letter.

A quest, how could he say no to a quest? This is what he's wanted his whole life, from the day he was born practically. That's why, when the king asked him to retrieve the sword of OneForAll that he said yes.

At that time he didn't know what he was up ahead, who allies he would meet or who enemy's he would face.
But one thing's for sure, he was ready, he was ready to face whatever danger he came across.

It was a clear spring morning and the forest was alight with strips of sunlight, making it seem like the trees were on fire. Whilst everyone in the village was sleeping at such an early time, the small cottage held a quiet hustle. If you stood outside the door, or an open window, you would be able to hear the frantic worrying that Inko was doing over her son.

"Izuku, have you got everything, berries? map? coins? tea?" Inko hurriedly looked inside the neatly packed bag that slung over her son's shoulder. Her increasing worry formed a frown on her brow, not a very common emotion for her to hold. It would be the first time that Izuku had been away for so long, and damn anyone that would laugh at her for worrying about her baby. There had been strong rumours around the village that there would be a war starting, one of king Toshironi's old allies turned bad. She didn't want Izuku to be caught up in such stuff, Inko had heard tales of kings picking poor village people in promise that they would get a grand prize if they return with what he requested, only never hearing from them or their families again. Of course she couldn't show a trace of doubt for her izuku, if he wanted to do this so badly, who was she to stop him?

She could only steer him in the right direction, not lead him.

Izuku laughed, his green curls bouncing on his head as he stood up, reassuring his mother that he would be just fine. Izuku had checked his bag way too many times to count, he had his notebooks after all, they were the most important part of every journey. He had record lots of stuff in them, unfortunately he could only bring his latest one. Izuku took great care in his notebooks, they were leather bound and adoringly beautiful, his notes matching the outside perfectly. Drawings and pictures of berries and fruits that were safe and unsafe to eat. Recipes for when he will own his mother bakery one day. He also had notes on people, but the most he had notes on were the fokelore. Whether people believed that they were real or not he had notes on every single one. Izuku stood up and took a deep breath, this is what he'd wanted for ages. A chance to prove himself, a chance to prove that he wasn't useless, or weak, a Deku. He wasn't, not anymore.

Why would the king choose him if he was useless?

Izuku smoothed down his green waistcoat and slipped on his red boots, a sword carrier on his waist for when he finds it, and it hit him. He, Izuku Midoriya was on a quest for King Toshironi. Going to retrieve the sword of OneForAll. His mind clouded with doubt, would he really be able to do this? All on his own? His mother surely cant come with him, besides the village people need a baker, how would they get their bread otherwise?

So checking over everything, herbs in his pockets, small jars of spices and a large loaf of bread and an above average lump of cheese was sitting at the top of his bag, covering old notebooks and quills. Being the bakers son really had some perks. Izuku had tried to have a large breakfast, but nerves got the best of him and only managed to swallow a few bites. The rest of the cinnamon roll ended up wrapped in a napkin in one of his belt pockets.

Finally, izuku decided, it was time to set off. Fake confidence flowing through his veins, but a hope for a better future still fresh in his mind. He opened the door.

Bright sunlight made his pupils shrink as they got used to the sudden light, he smiled, he was going to help save the world, and he was not backing down, not yet, not ever. This is the story of how Izuku Midoriya became the first shifter hero.
