You never know

Summary:

Before leaving the library Huey runs off to grab the original woodchuck guidebook, and Louie follows him.

Notes:

I 100% believe this happened before they left, and you can't convince me otherwise.

Work Text:

Huey retraced his steps through the lost library, trying to find something. He had to find it again before they left, because it was way too important to leave behind.

Eventually he reached his destination. Bradford's office, and right there on the pedestal was the original Junior Woodchuck Guidebook. There was no way he was leaving this behind.

He began flipping through the pages, admiring what was probably the most valuable artifact he'd ever found on an adventure.

"There you are Hubert." A voice calls behind him. Huey, startled out of his thoughts, quickly turns to see his youngest brother standing in the doorway.

"Come on it's time to go home." Louie said, motioning towards the hallway, only then did he notice what Huey was holding.

"Whatcha got there?" He asked, genuinely curious.

"Oh nothing, just the original junior woodchuck guidebook." Huey declared, practically shoving the book in Louie's face.

Louie's eyes momentarily widened in surprise, before he caught himself and put on an indifferent expression.

"Ok cool, you found more nerd stuff whatever." He said, putting his hands on his pockets.

"Oh come on, you're impressed and you know it." Huey said teasing his youngest brother.

"What n.. no I'm not." Louie stuttered, pulling his hood over his head. "It's just dumb, useless nerd stuff."

"Right, and this useless nerd stuff totally didn't help you rescue me today." Huey replied, a smug smile on his face.

"Well...I.... fine" Louie sighed in defeat, putting his hood down. "I'll admit, it's a neat find."

"I KNOW RIGHT" Huey shouted "The original guidebook made by Isabella Finch herself. This is the coolest thing I've ever found."

So you gonna carry around two of those nerd books now?" Louie asked

"No of course not." Huey replied "I'm donating the original to the junior woodchucks, this kind of artifact deserves to held in a museum or something."

Huey put the original guidebook under his hat, and then pulled his usual one.

"As for this one I've got an idea for it. One that I've been thinking about for quite a while now. And by a while I mean like half an hour.

"Ok... and that would be?" Louie asked

"Well as you know I basically have this thing memorized from cover to cover. Sure I use it to check stuff sometimes, but I've pretty much memorized all of it."

"Where are you going with this Hubert?" Louis asked, confused by what his brother was saying.

Long story short, I want you to have it." Huey said handing it over to his shocked brother.

"What no i can't take that, plus I have no use for it anyway." Louie said, refusing to take his brothers most prized possession.

"Louie you used it to save me today." Huey said, continuing to hold the book out.

"It was Dewey's idea to use it, all I did was take it with."

"You still took it with, and you also used it."

"But won't you still need it, you have it memorized sure, but I've seen you go without it, you're a complete mess without it." Louie insisted

"Lou I can easily buy a new copy, it costs like 20 bucks." Huey replied. "Seriously take it, you never know when it could come in handy. Just like it did today."

Louie took a moment to think about his brothers words. He wasn't sure how they would have found Huey without the guidebook today. Plus there were plenty of times where the info in it had been helpful. And maybe there was stuff in it that could help him with his own interest, he'd never actually checked.

"Are you sure Huey, I mean it is your most prized possession?" He asks.

"I know it is." He replies "but I want you to have it now. Like I said I can just get a new one"

Louie hesitates for a moment before reaching out and taking the book, looking at it in his hands for a moment before smiling.

"I'll..... take good care of it." He says, smiling at his brother.

Huey then puts his hand on Louie's shoulder. "I know you will Lou." He says before waking past him and out of the room. "Come on let's get going."

Ok I'll be right behind you." Louie says as Huey walks away. He looks back at the book in his hands before pulling a pen out of his hoodies pocket.

Opening the book to the first page, he sees the words "Property of Huey Duck" written on it. He takes the pen and crosses out Huey's name before writing his own name underneath it. Smiling, he puts the pen and book into his pocket and runs down the hall after his brother.

Notes:

Hope you guys enjoyed this story. Like I said before I firmly believe this happened.
