Chapter Text

“Ethan! Detention. Again. How many times is this going to happen for you to get?” Mr. Leni honestly seemed more tired of it than anything else. “As many times as you want Teach.” Ethan smirked. Matt laughed at him while Ethan walked out of the room. “Good one!”

“Matthew, you’re going to be next if you don’t sit down and get to work.” Matt chuckled a bit but sat down.

Matt and Ethan, or better known as Ethan and Matt, were best friends. Ethan was the popular theater kid, and Matt was just the slightly popular...kid. The juniors both went to Plywood High School.

Ethan was the ginger and the loud one. While Matt was the black haired, and skin toned, quieter one. Matt was almost just as loud as Ethan though.

School was over and Matt was packing up his stuff when he walked over. “Hey Matt,” he looked around, “Uh, why are you by yourself? Aren’t you usually with that...uh... Eren kid?” He asked.

“Ethan, and he got detention again.” He explained, putting his backpack on his shoulders.

“Again?” He tilted his head to the side in confusion.

“Yeah. He’s sorta famous for it. Well, I guess infamous.”

The guy laughed and changed his bag to his other shoulder.

“So Sage, why’d you decide to come and talk to me?” They were both walking out of the school.

“You just looked kinda lonely, so I stepped in. I know you walk home, so you can walk with me if you want.” Sage gave him a grin.

‘Oh. Didn’t expect that from him. He’s usually the one that’s lonely, not the other way around.’ Matt thought.

“Well, I usually go with Ethan but,” he waved to the empty space next to him, “so yeah sure, we can walk.”

Sage smiled again before walking right next to him. They weren’t standing too close, but close enough for Matt to smell his slight flowery scent.

“Yours or mine?” Matt looked over to him to make sure.

“Yours of course. I’m walking you. Remember?” Sage’s face screamed with almost disbelief that he had needed to say something that seemed simple.

“Right right.” Matt laughed out as if he had just realized.

The two walked in comfortable silence until they reached Matt’s house.

“Well, this is my place.” Matt started to pull out his key.

“See Ya!” Sage yelled while walking away and waving.

“See Ya dude.”

After unlocking the door, Matt walked in and noticed neither his dad's, nor little sister's shoes were there.

‘Guess they’re not here.’ He thought before walking upstairs. His backpack fell with a thump as it dropped to the floor.

“Ugh.” He groaned.

‘It’s funny when he does that shit in class, but afterwards I... I miss him. It’s so irritating that he gets his phone taken while he’s in trouble, so I can’t even call him. This one must be the worst because he got three weeks of detention. THREE WEEKS.’ Matt threw himself down on his bed.

‘It’s usually only 2 days or maybe, if he was pushing it, a week. But almost a month?’

He sighed before pulling out his phone to his Instagram.

(Me and this ugly ass boy at the arcade!)

It was a picture of two guys in his class.

‘Of course, they’re out having fun while I'm at home only looking at it. I hate Ethan so much.’

He was lying of course; Ethan was his best friend after all. Has been since the third grade.

(Matt had been sitting down at his lunch table with a couple of kids from class. He was pretty much someone who was friends with popular kids, but not really the same popularity as them alone.

“Matt. What shows do you watch? You know I watch Deremy.” It was some random popular kid talking to him. If he was being honest, he couldn’t be bothered to remember his name.

“I watch Deremy too. It’s cool.” He was lying through his teeth. He hadn’t watched the show at all. It wasn’t in his tastes, but he lied anyway.

“Oh really! I knew you were cool! You remember what happened in episode 2 with the superbugs?” The kid seemed super excited, though Matt could not meet it. Matt smiled anyway.

“Yeah. That’s where they killed them with the rocket.” Matt answered. He knew he would have to know a bit about the show if anyone asked him about it, so he did simple research on it.

Ethan looked over at him. ‘He’s lying. I can tell.’ Matt looked back, feeling him staring at him. ‘That’s Ethan. The most popular kid in our class...Why is he staring at me like that?’

“You need something?” Matt asked, interrupting whatever the other kid was talking about. Ethan looked shocked, and slightly embarrassed that he had gotten caught staring.

“I-uh...No?” Ethan tried to sound confused, as if he wasn’t the one in the wrong.

Matt just turned back to the guy that was talking to him. “What were you saying?" He asked, even though he didn’t really care.

“Oh, I was-” The kid then got interrupted by the bell.

‘Wow, I was really saved by the bell.’ Matt thought to himself, picking up his lunch tray. "Well...bye I guess.” He then threw his trash away and headed for the door to recess.

Ethan quickly got up, throwing his trash away and following him.

Matt groaned, hearing Ethan’s footsteps behind him. ‘I’m not in the mood for these kids always bothering me.’ Matt turned towards Ethan, who almost bumped into him.

“What do you want?”

“I... I just wanted to know. Why were you lying?”

“About?” Matt was slightly worried.

“Deremy. I could tell you were lying about liking it.”

Matt was shocked. Usually when he lied so people would like him, no one ever picked up on it. He didn’t know how to react to the question.

Ethan smirked. ’So, I was right.’ “If you don’t like Deremy, why not just say that?”

Matt was a bit taken aback, so he responded quite hostilely. “It’s none of your business.” He started to walk away.

Ethan then ran over and grabbed his shoulder. “Yes. It’s my business now because I know you were lying and now, I get to know why!” Ethan proclaimed.

Matt looked off to the side to see Ethan’s friends and random girls staring at the two. “Don’t you have your friends and like a million girlfriends to talk to instead?” Ethan was confused and then looked back. “Oh yeah! I forgot about them.”

“It’s fine. I would rather talk to you.” Matt’s face went into a small blush. “You really mean that?”

“Uh yeah! That’s why I said it. I not a liar like you.” Ethan teased. Matt then hit him softly on his arm. “Oh, so it’s like that?” Ethan then began chasing after Matt as he ran away.)

He then heard a ‘ding’ from his phone, so he picked it up.

He frowned. He was having fun talking to her. Now, it was just him. Matt sat for a couple of minutes before deciding to pull out some homework.

Matt got bored and pulled out a notebook. Matt was actually good at playing the guitar and had okay singing skills. Nothing really noteworthy, just good enough.

‘Is it bad I want to write a song about Ethan?’ He knew he shouldn't do it. It would make him have to admit the feelings he’s been trying to dismiss. He groaned loudly as he put his head down.

Matt had been struggling with trying to push down his feelings for Ethan. He had been in love with Ethan since basically seventh grade. The year everyone as a whole hates. And for Matt, he can relate to the hatred for the year. It was the year that he had not only realized his feelings, but he also had to realize what they meant for him from now on.

He used to have a crush on a guy in the fourth grade at a different school. By now, he and Ethan were pretty good friends. They were close, but he was only 10 years old and barley figuring out his sexuality, so he definitely did not want to tell Ethan he was possibly gay.

He really liked the boy, and the other boy was someone who he thought was gay. Whenever someone asked him what girls he liked, most of the time he would say that he wasn’t into dating girls. The kid would just say other things that made it seem like he liked guys. Plus, they were really close friends.

So, Matt wanted to be brave and decided to tell the guy how he felt. He told him to meet him at an afterschool park. When he had sad no, of course Matt was regretting his choice, but then the kid made it even worse.

He began to call him all different types of slurs and told the kids at his school about Matt. Matt was embarrassed, but glad he at least didn’t tell the kids at his own school.

With this in mind, he knew he could never tell Ethan he had a crush on him, let alone the fact he was gay.

“Fuck...I shouldn’t do it... But....Maybe it will be a good way to just let out my feelings without actually letting them out.” He began to write down a couple of notes he already had in mind. He knew it was a terrible excuse to write a song about his feelings for Ethan, but he wanted to do it anyways.

‘It’s not like Ethan would ever find out anyways. He’s going to be gone for the next three weeks. Which was something I didn’t need to be reminded of.’
