Work Text:
Enid and Ajax had been sort of not-quite dating for a awhile now. And you see as much as Enid liked the stoner boy, she could never stand the intimacies between them.
She told herself over and over again that she would eventually get over her initial disgust when it came to kissing, but the uneasy feeling was still there when the two of them would make out. She had always dreamt of having a picture perfect romance and this was far from it. If only she could decode the reason as to why.
It was a sunny afternoon and all Enid could do was lay on her bed feeling sorry for herself. She wished the sun could infect her with it’s overbearingly bright attitude today.
Enid pulled out her earphones that were blasting music in her ears and sat up to talk to her gloomy roommate, “Wednesday?”
Wednesday immediately picked up on Enid’s dejected tone.
The Addams girl turned around to face Enid properly with a look of concern on her face, “Don’t tell me that boy of yours has done something to upset you again, I already gave him his last warning.”
“No, no, nothing like that… It’s me. I’m the problem,” Enid bit her lip nervously.
Wednesday looked stunned at the blonde girl’s admission, “Whatever do you mean by that?” She raised a curious eyebrow.
Enid hesitated before confessing the truth, “I don’t like kissing Ajax all that much…”
Wednesday’s response to Enid was immediate, “Well I’d imagine so, boys are unhygienic creatures by nature,” she spoke nonchalantly.
Enid looked up from where she had been picking at her nails, “Really? So it’s perfectly normal to feel this way?”
Wednesday thought for a moment, “I suppose so, yes.”
A feeling of relief washed over the blonde girl,“Thanks Wednesday!”
Wednesday had to stop herself from smiling dumbly at the other girl, “Now please keep the noise down so I can work on my novel without any distractions.”
“My mouth is zipped shut from here on out!”
——
Enid was feeling much better during the days after her conversation with Wednesday. It seemed like every girl experienced some level of disgust when it came to dating boys; which meant her feelings were completely normal and she wasn’t going crazy as she originally thought she was.
What she wasn’t feeling so good about however, was the fact that she had to sit and listen to Xavier’s lovesick ramblings. The tortured artist was getting on her last nerve recently.
Yoko wanted to sit with the Fangs today, so Enid was blissfully alone until the Thorpe boy decided to make himself her company. Xavier had sat down across from Enid looking like a kicked puppy before going on an unwarranted tangent about his hopeless crush on her roommate.
“I mean she’s been sending me all these signals and everything, but when I ask her out on dates and stuff she keeps making stupid excuses. It’s always ‘you wouldn’t be able to handle me’ or something like that.”
She had been listening to him for too long. Enid was at her wits end and it was high time that she knocked the boy off of his high horse, “Or maybe Wednesday just doesn’t like you like that.”
Xavier’s jaw practically dropped open, “Okay, what is your problem? You’ve been glaring at me this entire time.”
“WHAT’S MY PROBLEM? You’re the one that decided to interrupt my peace and quiet,” Enid felt like a volcano on the verge of erupting, “and it’s clear that Wednesday couldn’t give less of a rats ass about your romantic conquests.”
“Are you jealous? Because you’re acting like Wednesday’s possessive ex-girlfriend right now.”
Out of all of the things Enid expected Xavier to respond with, that was not one of them. Enid? Jealous? Puhhhleaseee.
She cleared her throat and held her head up high, “Of course I’m not jealous, I just don’t appreciate the fact that you’ve been smothering my roommate non-stop since the beginning of the semester.”
Xavier looked fed up, “Fine whatever, but you’re being seriously out of line right now”
“And you’re being seriously delusional.”
Enid sent Xavier one last warning glare before standing up to leave. She couldn’t deal with his hormonal messes anymore.
——
Today was her date with Ajax. She should have been feeling over the moon but she only felt an impending sense of dread.
She turned around from where she was picking out an outfit and held one of her shirts up to show Wednesday.
“What do you think about this one?”
Wednesday deadpanned, “I think this onslaught of bright colours will make me go blind, Enid”
Enid whined, “Come on! Just tell me your honest opinion.”
“My honest opinion is that your not-quite-boyfriend better spoil you rotten regardless of whether your date outfit is hideous or not.”
Enid’s face flushed, then she put on her best teasing grin, “Or I’m guessing you’ll torture him with one of your medieval toys?”
Wednesday picked up her nearest axe to show it off, “These are not toys, they’re very much real,” she added on, “and deadly.”
Enid smiled before turning to look at the time. She immediately paled, “Oh fiddlesticks! I’m going to be super late if I don’t leave right now!”
Wednesday muttered a few supportive words under her breath, hoping that they would go unnoticed, “Good luck on your date.”
Unluckily for Wednesday, Enid had werewolf hearing, “What did you say?”
The Addams girl’s cheeks turned aflame with embarrassment, “I said good luck on your date! If you breathe a word of this to anyone, I’ll kill you.”
“Thank you… I mean it,” Enid felt a strange heat creep up her neck before shaking the feeling off. She was ready to go. Enid took a deep breath to psyche herself up for her date with Ajax, “Now I better get going, see you later roomie!” She gave her roommate a small wave before dipping out the door.
——
Enid was not having fun at all.
As it turns out, Ajax’s idea of a romantic candlelit dinner was going to a restaurant that’s catered towards vegetarians and only vegetarians! Everyone knew that werewolves were strictly meat eaters.
Ajax was on the verge of despair as he looked at his soon-to-be girlfriend’s face. Enid looked bored out of her mind, as if she was attending her least favourite class rather than a date.
Ajax cleared his throat, “Are you doing alright Enid?”
Enid took a deep breath in and out, Ajax was a really sweet boy. She couldn’t and wouldn’t explode in his face, especially after he went through all of this trouble for her.
She faked her best grateful smile, “Why wouldn’t I be?”
Ajax could see right through the bubbly girl’s facade, “You know you can talk to me about anything right?”
Enid considered telling him the truth, and soon came to the conclusion that it would be for the best seeing as she really had no other choice, “I’m a werewolf.”
Ajax looked utterly confused, “I know that already?”
“What I mean is, this is a restaurant for vegetarians and werewolves can only eat meat,” she clarified.
“Oh.”
She sighed, “Look, I know it was an honest mistake on your behalf so I’m not mad or anything-”
Ajax quickly interrupted, “You have every right to be mad at me, I’m so so sorry about this.”
Enid felt an immense wave of guilt surge through her at the boys apology, all despite being the one that was brought to a restaurant that she couldn’t eat at.
Maybe it was karma for the disgust she had been feeling towards Ajax’s displays of affection this entire time. In her head, she was the one that should be apologising, not him.
“It’s okay, I forgive you,” at this point she just wanted to go home to Ophelia Hall and sleep for an eternity. Maybe then she could look Ajax in the eye.
Ajax suggested, “We could go somewhere else instead, if you’d like to.”
Enid felt herself soften at the sincerity shown on Ajax’s face, “I’m a bit tired, can we just postpone for now?”
“Of course! Would Friday night do?” Of course Ajax was as understanding as ever.
“Yeah, yeah, that’s cool with me…”
When Enid finally got back and unlocked the door to her room, she all but collapsed into her bed with a huff. It had been a long long night.
——
Enid found that she would much rather be making out with Ajax, when Thing and Eugene interrupted their snogging session with the news that Wednesday was in danger.
She felt her entire world collapse at the thought of Wednesday being hurt, or worse, left for dead. Enid could feel tears building up in her eyes, but this wasn’t the time for crying. She had to get to Wednesday and make sure she was safe.
After discussing the plan of action with the Nightshades, a secret society that had existed beyond her knowledge until now, Enid took thing with her and ran towards the woods bordering Nevermore as if her life depended on it. And it kind of did. She had to find Wednesday.
Five minutes into her desperate search, Enid felt a gut-wrenching pain wrack through her entire body and she fell to the forest floor, thing flying off of her shoulder.
It was the worst pain that she had ever felt, the feeling of her bones snapping and her skin stretching becoming unbearable. Looking down at her hands, Enid felt her heart stop. She was wolfing out.
She didn’t feel excited or happy at the fact, the only emotion that plagued her mind was hope. Hope that she could be of better use to Wednesday in her wolf form.
As soon as Enid fully transformed, she found that her hearing ability had increased by leaps and bounds and she could hear the whispers of a conversation coming from deep in the woods. It was Wednesday. She would be able recognise those deadpan replies from a mile away.
Enid moved towards the sound with her newfound speed and prayed to the gods that she wasn’t too late.
When she finally arrived at the scene, Enid saw Tyler in his Hyde form, and he was holding Wednesday down against a tree stump with his claws raised. He was going to strike and kill her.
Enid wasn’t going to let that happen. She leapt up and tackled him to the ground, sending the both of them flying. Enid slowly turned around from where she had successfully thrown Tyler against a tree and when she saw Wednesday standing before her with all of her limbs attached, her werewolf features softened ever so slightly.
The relief that washed over her at seeing her roommate safe and sound was only temporary though. Tyler noticed Enid had her guard lowered and used the opportunity to attack her from behind. The fight was on.
Enid barely remembers the events that followed after that, being high off adrenaline and dizzy with pain. She could only remember bits and pieces. Wednesday leaving a panicked expression evident across her face, a gunshot ringing through the air moments before Tyler would have won the fight, Thing holding her hand to comfort her while her wolf form slowly faded away.
What she did remember clearly however, was how worried she had been when she couldn’t spot Wednesday among the crowd of students that gathered at the edge of Nevermore. She couldn’t be less worried about her own wounds and the grime that was stuck to them in that moment.
She looked around with her heart begging to jump out of her chest, “Where’s Wednesday?”
Her distress only lasted for a few moments before she noticed three forms approaching from the distance. The shortest of them had two messy braids cascading down her shoulders. She immediately recognised the girl as Wednesday.
Enid didn’t hesitate before running up to hug Wednesday’s small form. Enid squeezed the air out of her roommate before realising her mistake and pulling away. Not hugging had always been their thing.
Only she didn’t expect the Addams girl to leap back into her arms and return the embrace just as tightly.
After all of this time, Enid finally felt like she was home.
——
The first person Enid Sinclair saw upon waking up in the hospital was Wednesday Addams.
It took awhile for Enid’s eyes to adjust to the fluorescent hospital lights but when they did she felt herself smile. Wednesday looked as beautiful as ever, albeit slightly dishevelled.
She suspected that she was hallucinating because when she studied the other girl’s features it looked as if she had been crying. Wednesday’s eyes were red-rimmed and her cheeks were more colourful than usual.
“What’s wrong?” Enid asked her.
Wednesday looked away from the bedridden girl, “Nothing is a matter, I’m just… glad to see that you’re finally awake.”
Although the Addams girl wouldn’t say it out loud, Enid knew Wednesday had been concerned for her well-being. It showed in the slight chance of expression on her face, that only people that knew Wednesday well would be able to notice.
Enid searched through her memories and attempted to recall the events before she blacked out, “What happened? After I won the fight against Tyler, I mean.”
She didn’t think it was possible for Wednesday’s face to gain any more colour, but she was proved wrong, “You ran up to me and… hugged me, before passing out cold from your injuries.”
“And you hugged me back,” Enid stated.
Wednesday cleared her throat before putting on her best neutral expression, “I have no idea what you are talking about.”
“And you’re embarrassed.” Another statement.
“Embarrassment is such a trivial emotion.”
Enid grinned, “See! You didn’t denied it.”
She continued, “But really, I’m happy you’re here Wednesday. And don’t worry! I won’t tell anyone that you’ve visited if it makes you feel embarrassed.” Enid winked.
That flirtatious wink triggered a bout of honesty from the shorter girl, “It’s a fault of mine to feel this way towards you…”
“Embarrassed?” Enid questioned.
“No, worse. I’ve started to feel a disgusting emotion that closely resembles affection and dare I say it, love.”
Enid couldn’t believe her ears. She felt butterflies flood her stomach in an instant and a warm blush permitted her face.
She mustered up all of her courage to ask, “What do you mean by that?”
“My parents were right, as much as I hate to admit it. I’ve fallen victim to the treacheries of love.”
Wednesday looked around and then hesitantly reached for the other girl’s hand, trying to show the sincerity of her words.
Enid reciprocated the gesture with the biggest smile plaguing her face, “You love me?”
“I’d kill for you, I don’t do that for just anyone,” Wednesday admitted
The blonde girl snorted with a newfound joy radiating from her eyes, “As disturbing as that sentence was, I’d probably do the same for you in a heartbeat.”
“We’re gross.” Wednesday had the smallest of smiles on her face.
Enid ran her thumb over the back of her roommates hand, “Totally gross.”
