Chapter Text
They hum as they whisk the batter in the bowl, clumsily so. Occasionally their eyes wander to the big box their father bought recently, currently it’s playing their favorite show full of puppets and sometimes people. They liked to have something in the background while they did anything, it helped with the silence when their father was away.
They’d make themselves breakfast and maybe later that day they’d wander into the front of the apartments to draw with calk. Anything, anything but stay inside the apartment any longer to see the sun leave the room and show how barren it really was. Besides that, they messily pour the batter into a pouring cup and start up the stove. Butter. They remember.
They make sure when they’re done cooking to do all the things that dad told them to do after, put the dishes in the sink. (Which still had dishes from last week in it.) And to turn off the stove. They’d made two pancakes, both had chocolate chips and one that was supposed to look like their father. They pour syrup on both and only grab one before heading to the living room.
They eat their pancake in front of the TV now, watch the mouths move but never taking in the information in full. And when they finish they rush to grab the chalk set and go outside. They frown when they make it outside, it’s foggy but that didn’t matter. They draw a happy image, a father, mother, child, sibling, dog, cat. Anything they can think of.
Their minds slightly wonder to where their father went, he was absent and god knows where. Sometimes in a self-loathing stupor they think they’re too dumb to recall where he said he’d wander off to. But that didn’t matter because when he got back, everything would be okay.
