I still get jealous

Summary:

Xavier tried not to get jealous, he knew it wasn't Tyler's fault that Xavier wasn't enough for Wednesday but man was it hard not to point fingers

AKA

Wednesday and Xavier had been getting close when Tyler arrives back in town. Xavier assumes that's the end of their short lived relationship but Wednesday had different ideas

Work Text:

Xavier was happy to report that Wednesday had in fact come back to Nevermore for the next term, and the term after that and the term after that. It had been over a year since everything went down with the Hyde and Wednesday had not been keeping out of trouble at all.

Since the events of last year, Wednesday had uncovered not one but two murder plots, had figured out that the new mayor was corrupt and kidnapping Nevermore students to experiment on them and she had figured out that there was a graveyard hidden in the woods, she had yet to fully crack that one though.

Her and Xavier were also pretty much one entity at this point, wherever one was, the other was, usually with Enid and Ajax in tow. Perhaps that's why everyone just assumed the two were a couple, neither of them corrected anyone because what was the point? Wednesday didn't care and Xavier wanted it to be true.

And he really thought they might be getting somewhere. Wednesday was smiling more, she was blinking more (Thing had blabbed to him that she only did that when she felt strong emotions), she even posed for him so that he could paint her and she asked him to the Rave'N again but this time they actually went together, just as "friends" but it was still a great experience.

Xavier was working up the nerves to ask Wednesday out officially when Tyler blew back into town and messed everything up. Wednesday started spending less time with him and more time with Tyler, she said she just wanted to make sure he was okay after everything that happened but it still stung. Xavier couldn't even blame her, he didn't really blame Tyler for anything that happened the year before either, it was very obvious he was manipulated into it.

Every time Xavier asked to hang out it was "I'm going to see Tyler that day" or "Tyler agreed to help with the graveyard case", even though it would normally be Xavier that helped her on her investigations. Eventually he stopped asking and it wasn't long before other people noticed something going on too.

Everyone assumed they broke up and when one of the gorgons from the year below questioned him about it, he didn't know what to say. It felt like a breakup but they were also never actually dating so he didn't know how to answer the question.

When Ajax said how sorry he was about the break up, Xavier was kind of incredulous. How he hadn't noticed that even their closest friends thought the two were dating, he would never know but when he told Ajax that the two weren't dating and had never been dating, Ajax just gave him a disbelieving laugh.

"Oh you're serious," Ajax said when he saw the look on Xavier's face. Xavier just nodded.

"But you're like totally in love with each other…" He trailed off, confused.

'Me too, buddy. Me too,' Xavier thought to himself.

"Well I definitely have feelings for her, there is no point in denying that, but I don't think my emotions are returned. She has barely left Tyler's side since he got back into town," Xavier said bitterly, he tried not to be jealous but it's not something that could be helped sometimes.

"Have you thought that maybe Wednesday is just weary of him still? He did try to kill her and succeeded in killing multiple other people. It's not a stretch to think that maybe she doesn't trust him completely."

"Wednesday doesn't trust anyone completely, and even if you are right for now, I don't give it long until the two are going back to how the were before everything happened."

"You know, I don't think that's true. Either point. Wednesday trusts you Xavier. Yeah she trusts Enid and Thing too but that's still a very small circle to be in. And as for Tyler, she has you now. I doubt she is going with him," Ajax comforted.

"She had me last time too, didn't stop her from framing me for murder."

"Have you considered that you might not be as over that whole situation as you are trying appearing?" Ajax questioned, Xavier left without answering.

Another 2 weeks went by with minimal contact between the two former friends. Where they ex friends now? That thought made Xavier upset but it seemed like a pretty fitting description.

There was a knock on the door of Xavier's art shed before Wednesday walked in. Had they really gotten that distant that Wednesday had to knock.

"Why have you been ignoring me?" Straight to the point, like she usually is.

Xavier scoffed, "I think you'll find it was the other way around. You've been so busy I thought you had forgotten about me and I didn't want to disturb your precious alone time with Tyler."

Wednesday bristled and Xavier was hit by how rude that came off.

"What's that supposed to mean?" She asked, with narrowed eyes.

Xavier sighed.

"Nothing, I just feel like we aren't exactly… friends anymore. You have been spending almost all of your time with Tyler recently and I feel like I've been tossed to the sidelines. I knew a year ago that I was your backup option but I let myself hope nonetheless. Now that Tyler is here and you have your number one back, I'm beginning to realise that hoping might have been a mistake."

"Xavier… I'm not sure I understand," Wednesday said slowly, it's not often that emotion confuses her anymore, thanks to Enid's help, but this has her perplexed.

"Oh Jesus Christ, I'm in love with you Wednesday, like heart-stopping, earth-shatteringly in love with you and it hurts to know that you will always pick Tyler over me," he replied, tears in his eyes. He moved to go around Wednesday and leave his shed, it was raining outside.

'How very fitting,' he thought. Wednesday followed him out.

"Xavier wait, you can't possibly think- well I-"

Xavier kept walking.

"I'm not in love with Tyler, I'm in love with you, you stupid boy!" Wednesday shouted. Xavier stopped in his tracks.

"It's true that I thought I had feelings for Tyler at one point but they are nothing for what I feel for you. I don't think they ever were, maybe that's why I tried so hard to convince myself you were the Hyde. It was easier than confronting all of that," Wednesday confessed.

"You framed me for murder because you thought you liked me?" Xavier was angry now and he flashed back to the conversation he had had with Ajax.

"I don't know, okay? I had never felt anything like that before and it was scary. I panicked," Wednesday was fiddling with her dress and chewing on her bottom lip, both signs of the anxiety she was feeling. Those feelings only amplified as the silence stretched on.

"Well? Please say something Xavier."

Xavier moved closer to Wednesday and before she knew it the two were kissing. Wednesday could feel his chapped lips and his cold hand pressing against her cheek. The rain poured around them, soaking their clothes through completely. It was addictive.

Xavier pulled back, "we have a lot to talk about but first I kind of want to kiss you again."

Wednesday readily agreed.
