An Unexpected Cuddle

Summary:

“Yaz… Do you think I could…” The Doctor started, removing her hands from her pockets and playing with the hem of her shirt, a clear sign that she was nervous about asking, even though it was not the first time they’d done this “Do you think I could watch it with you? Please?”

aka Yaz tricks the Doctor into watching a movie in bed with her, knowing it would make the alien get some much needed rest. But things don't exactly happen as she expected...

Work Text:

“God, I’m knackered. I might go to bed.”

The Doctor turned around to meet her friend, assessing her from top to bottom.

“Are you okay though?” She asked worriedly and Yaz frowned.

“Yeah, why wouldn't I be?”

“Because you say you’re knackered? That can't be good can it?” The Doctor asked innocently and Yaz smiled fondly. She forgot sometimes that the Doctor forgets the fundamentals of how humans work.

“It was a long day. I just need some sleep and I’ll be good to go in the morning.”

“Oh.” The Doctor frowned but it didn't last long “Right, yeah, of course. You should, hm… You should get some rest then. Okay.”

Now it was Yaz’s turn to frown because the Doctor was acting a little weird. Even more than usual.

“Shouldn't you get some sleep too, Doctor? You seem a bit… Loopy.”

“Me? Nah. Had a nap like two weeks ago, I’m perfectly fine!”

“Two wee-” Yaz sighed, knowing better than to argue. Hell would freeze over before the Doctor ever admitted to being tired. And there was another way of getting her to rest a bit anyway.

The same way she had gotten the Doctor to take that nap two weeks ago. Worked then. Surely it would work now, right?

“Okay, well. I’m going to bed and watch a movie.”

With that the alien lifted her head from the console, attention solemnly on Yaz now.

“Thought you were going to sleep?”

“Yeah, but I’m gonna watch a movie first. So, goodnight.”

She turned around and left, knowing fully well she had left the Doctor debating on what to do. She might claim she’s not tired, but Yaz had figured out a while back that the Doctor can never resist a movie in bed. Especially when Yaz is there. Which is something she most certainly won't unpack just now.

And she also learned that the Doctor is incapable of watching a movie without falling asleep. Providing the Time Lord the rest she so much needs and refuses to get.

As expected, not even twenty minutes later, Yaz is already in bed with a movie ready to press play on her laptop, when there’s a knock at the door and a few seconds later a blonde head peaks through.

“Have you started yet?”

“No, was just about to though.” Yaz smirked, burying herself deeper in the cushions and pulling the blanket closer to her neck “Did you need anything?”

The Doctor enters the room fully and closes the door softly behind her. She put her hands in her pockets while standing next to the bed, looking all over at Yaz with a face looking like an abandoned puppy.

“So… What are you watching?” The Doctor asked softly and Yaz could tell it was taking everything in the other woman not to immediately jump on the bed and join Yaz. But try as she might, Yaz could always see right through her. Especially when the alien was looking at her like that . With big pleading eyes.

“Oh, just some musical. Nothing special.” Yaz shrugged trying to pretend it was nothing, but she could immediately see the Doctor shifting from foot to foot.

“Oh? What musical?” The Doctor tried to get a peek at Yaz’s laptop, but to no success and she pouted “Is it Mamma Mia?”

“Yup.” Yaz said, popping the ‘p’ for emphasis and the Doctor’s eyes widened in excitement.

“Yaz… Do you think I could…” The Doctor started, removing her hands from her pockets and playing with the hem of her shirt, a clear sign that she was nervous about asking, even though it was not the first time they’d done this “Do you think I could watch it with you? Please?”

Yaz pretended to think about it for a few minutes, if only to tease the Doctor and watch her puppy eyes grow. But Yaz’s heart could only handle so much, so after a couple of minutes (because it couldn't have been more than that), she lifted the blanket and made space next to her.

“Come on then.” She said and the Time Lord immediately jumped on the bed, forgetting something essential “Doctor, please remove your shoes! And maybe your coat, it’s warm enough in here.”

Yaz said, only then realising what she had just said could have different implications. About things she had thought about before but would never act on. Never. Ever. Because she’d be crazy if she did. Right?

Anyway, the Doctor grimaced and immediately did as Yaz asked, removing her shoes and coat and just leaving them on the floor. Yaz shook her head, getting her laptop out of the way when the Doctor enthusiastically climbed into bed again and immediately pulled the blankets up to cover herself and Yaz and made herself comfy on the pillows.

Yaz watched in amusement as the Doctor moved her head from one side to the other to try and find a position she felt comfortable in. And then unexpectedly, she moved Yaz to lay down again and then just put her head on Yaz’s shoulder, sighing contentedly.

“That’s better.” She exclaimed, acting like this was the most normal thing for them. In all the times they have watched a movie together, the Doctor had never been this close. And Yaz’s brain was having a hard time catching up with it all.

“You okay Yaz?” The Doctor asked, not moving her head and Yaz simply nodded.

“Yup, all good.” She positioned the laptop on her lap again, making sure they were both comfortable and able to see the screen properly.

“Should I go and make popcorn?” The Doctor asked, lifting her head from Yaz’s shoulder, but Yaz shook her head.

“I think we’re good like this. We’re comfy. No point disturbing that right?” She said, partly because it was true and partly because if things went according to plan the Doctor would fall asleep within minutes. It was what had happened the last time.

“You’re right.” The Doctor placed her head on Yaz’s shoulder again and Yaz could feel it turning slightly until the Doctor’s nose was touching her neck “Movies in bed with Yaz? Amazing.”

Yaz smiled fondly, remembering the first time she had invited the Doctor around to hers. And every time after. And every time the Doctor said the same thing. It was a comfort at this point.

She pressed play on the film and they both settled in silence. Yaz knew it would be just a matter of time before the Doctor got up to do her own karaoke and start dancing around (that was usually how things went when they watched musicals and Yaz was already starting to wonder if she should’ve chosen a different film entirely).

But to her surprise, half an hour into the movie, the Doctor had not moved one bit and Yaz was curious as to whether the other woman had already fallen asleep or not. But when she looked down carefully (because if the Doctor was sleeping, the last thing Yaz wanted was to disturb her), the other woman’s eyes were still open, although Yaz could see her lips moving along to the song playing in the film and Yaz smiled.

Yaz felt her heart grow in size at such a sight. And even more when she realised that the Doctor was keeping still because of Yaz. Because Yaz said she was tired and because Yaz usually falls asleep during movies as well and so the Time Lord did not want to move in case Yaz was already asleep. She didn't want to disturb. And that realisation made Yaz’s heart beat with new vigour.

Yaz tried to calm herself. She had so many feelings for the woman whose head was currently resting on her shoulder, and so many times, completely unexpectedly, she felt those feelings increase tenfold. And even though she could never voice them, for several reasons, she knew those feelings were gonna keep growing.

Another half an hour goes by, none of them have moved. But over time Yaz started to listen to the Doctor humming quietly under her breath to each song and it just made Yaz smile. And at some point, the Doctor’s hand had moved to Yaz’s thigh, drawing small circles on it with her thumb. Whether the Doctor knew Yaz was still awake and could feel it, or if the Doctor didn't even realise she was doing it in the first place, Yaz didn't know. But she wasn't about to move, let alone say anything.

This kind of proximity between them was rare, and she was making the most out of it.

After a while she stopped listening to the Doctor’s humming and Yaz looked down to find the alien sleeping peacefully. Her mouth was slightly opened and Yaz just looked at her. The Doctor was beautiful all the time, but Yaz always loved seeing her like this because it was rare. Seeing the Doctor this calm and still and peaceful was a rare sight that Yaz felt lucky enough to be able to witness.

Carefully and slowly - because she was honestly really tired herself at this point - she turned off the laptop and moved it to the bedside table. She then moved carefully until she was fully lying down on the bed, the Doctor had moved only slightly away from Yaz’s shoulder but Yaz was relieved to see she was still sleeping soundly. From the few times Yaz had witnessed the Doctor sleep, she knew she was a heavy sleeper.

(Which was no wonder, considering she only slept properly every few weeks.)

Yaz pulled the blankets up until they were both sufficiently covered and turned until she was facing the Doctor. Her blonde hair was already a right mess but Yaz found it only gave her a softer look, and her heart grew again. Her mouth was still slightly opened and Yaz could see a bit of her tongue poking out. The Doctor mumbled something all of a sudden but Yaz didn't quite understand what it was and simply smiled fondly at the sleeping alien.

All it took her was one yawn to realise she really was tired and maybe it was a good idea to get some sleep herself. Her mission of getting the Time Lord to get some rest had been a success and now she could rest as well, knowing that in the morning the Doctor would wake up with more than a bit too much energy, ready to drag Yaz into another adventure. Which Yaz already felt excited about.

Maybe Yaz would have felt trapped when she woke up if it wasn't for her body telling her that whatever was wrapped around her in a koala grip was safe and did not pose any threat whatsoever. But it did take her brain a while to catch up to what was really going on.

She had turned away from the Doctor overnight, because she was now facing her bedroom wall and she could see a little light on the laptop blinking. And then she realised she hadn't been the only one moving. Which explained the two arms wrapped firmly around her waist and pulling her close. And the nose pressed against the back of her neck. And the warm breath she felt behind her.

The Doctor had moved in a way she was now cuddling Yaz in a way that Yaz could barely move. Not that she was complaining, because as it turns out, the Doctor gives really good cuddles and Yaz actually felt quite comfortable.

But she also couldn't help but wonder what would the other woman think if she suddenly woke up and found them like that. But she also knew this might be the only time the Doctor will rest in the upcoming weeks, so Yaz decides to stay still and let the alien (and herself) rest a little bit longer. After all, a quick look at the clock on the nightstand tells her it is still fairly early (not that it means anything when you’re drifting in deep space), but there’s no point in getting up now anyway.

So, she closed her eyes and allowed herself to fall back into slumber.

The next time Yaz woke up, the Doctor still had her arms wrapped around her. But this time, there was the addition of a leg that had, at some point, wrapped over her hip and was now keeping Yaz even more in place. And somehow she still felt comfortable and warm. And more importantly safe. It was like the Doctor was holding her tightly because she was scared Yaz was just going to disappear at any moment and this was the only way to prevent it.

It was endearing, and that feeling in Yaz’s heart only increased even more. Sometimes she wondered if a human heart was capable of harbouring the immense feelings she had for the woman wrapped around her.

But the moment didn't last much longer, because when Yaz moved the slightest bit, she felt the Doctor stir behind her. The grip around her tightened for a second before it finally relaxed. Yaz didn't want to move, but she didn't need to. She felt the Doctor’s nose rub against the back of her neck and then the other woman mumbling a small “Morning.”

And then it all happened really fast. The Doctor opened her eyes, realised what - or more like, who - it was she was holding and then immediately disentangled herself from Yaz. Yaz felt the loss immediately. All the warmth and safety she had wrapped around her was suddenly gone and she turned around until she was facing the Doctor who had her head buried in her pillow and Yaz could see the beetroot read on the tips of her ears.

It was quite adorable, she had to admit.

“Doctor?” She called softly, rubbing the blonde’s shoulder until she finally turned her head to look at Yaz. Her cheeks were as red as the tips of her ears.

“I’m so sorry, Yaz. I didn't mean to just grab you like that during sleep, I promise!” She immediately started apologising, sitting up and moving her arms around “Honestly, I don't know what got into me! It won't happen again, I promise you that! I am honestly so-”

“Doctor!” Yaz sat up as well, laughing and shaking her head in amusement. She couldn't believe the Doctor would actually think Yaz would be mad at such a thing. If only she knew how much Yaz had actually enjoyed it “It’s okay. Honestly. I didn't mind.”

“Oh.” The Doctor said, visibly more calm “You didn't?”

“No.” Yaz laughed to lighten the mood “I actually… I actually enjoyed it. It felt nice. I felt safe. It was- Yeah, it was really nice.”

“Oh.” The Doctor frowned, seemingly debating something “So you didn't mind? For real?”

“For real.”

“I also didn't.” The alien said timidly not looking at Yaz “I was only a little embarrassed cos I thought you could be mad, but I- I also liked it. To be like that. With you, I mean.”

The Doctor was most definitely doing everything in her power to not look at Yaz and she was playing with the hem of her shirts, which had gotten loose from her trousers during sleep. The Doctor was nervous, that much was clear.

“Hey.” Yaz hooked a finger under the alien’s chin, making her lift her head to look at Yaz properly “I also really liked it and… I wouldn't mind if we- If we did it more often? Maybe? If you want, I mean we don't have to if-”

But Yaz didn't even get to finish her sentence because the Doctor was nodding her head vigorously with the biggest grin Yaz had ever seen. And then she did something Yaz most certainly wasn't expecting: she threw herself at Yaz until they were both lying on the bed again and the Doctor positioned herself until she, once again, had her arms and leg wrapped around Yaz.

Except this time they were facing each other and had their eyes locked on each other. Yaz could swear she saw the Doctor's eyes drift down to her lips more than once, but none of them was moving an inch closer.

Not until the Doctor closed her eyes and moved her head enough until it was tucked under Yaz’s chin and Yaz felt the Doctor’s nose nuzzle her neck.

“Cuddles with Yaz? Amazing.” The Doctor exhaled and Yaz decided that maybe for today, an adventure could wait. Especially if it meant they could stay like this a little longer.
