Work Text:
The infirmary was busy for the past week and you being the head medic did not make work any easier. You swear you thought you had to patch up Soap about five times already making this the worst mission you all had been given. The only thing keeping your mind at bay was knowing König didn’t need any serious medical attention so far and hopefully not any time soon.
You had finished off the last stitch on a sergeant’s arm ready to wrap it up when you heard someone barging through the hospital doors followed by the protests of a familiar voice. Oh no. You whipped your head around not believing your ears until you saw the mountain of a man being ushered by the only other person even close to his height, Ghost, before you could process what happened to König you instructed a nearby medic to wrap the man in front of you. Once they had received and acknowledged your orders you motioned for Ghost to follow you, ushering him to an empty bed with a small group of medics trailing behind you guys ready to jump into action. “What happened?” The question was for you to do your job properly but also for you personally, wishing it was just a scrape and König is overreacting maybe even being a big baby. “The enemy came from behind, one shot his right shoulder another landed a knife right below.” Ghost responded back quick and curt knowing the severity of the situation if it’s not treated fast. You only nodded trying to drown out König’s protests mixed with cries of pain that felt like they were being groaned directly into your ear.
Once you all had reached the bed no one wasted any time; the small team began to gather supplies needed for operation, Ghost began to set König down on his stomach while you helped to ease him on the bed quickly thanking the lieutenant and sending him on his way. Now it was all hands on deck, scissors were handed to you and you began to cut away at the blood soaked fabric clinging to his body and it was a bloody mess. The bullet wound was deep and actively gushing blood while the large gash from the knife ran from under his shoulder blade towards his mid back, it was like they tried to cut him in half. You couldn’t help but stop and stare at his back until you noticed his back rising and falling rapidly as he was trying to breathe. Taking in the scene around you it looks like chaos and König is wide awake with a group of people surrounding him, he’s panicking. You would too in his situation and yell for all but one medic to leave the area.
“Rojas I need you to sterilize his wounds, I’ll work on his breathing for now.” You receive a short nod and turn back to König who is now straining to look at you, he still hasn’t calmed down and it’s not helping his situation. The mask has to come off , you realize knowing if he’s not breathing properly throughout this he may pass out and you don’t want to consider the possibility of him never waking up again. “I need to lift your mask okay?” You kneel down, the question coming out a bit more rushed than you’d like which causes him to shake his head. “I need to König. It’s just me, you and one other person. Please?” Adding the last part is what finally got him to cave and he shut his eyes as you lifted the fabric from his head noting how the back end of the fabric was soaked with blood as well. You gave him a quiet thank you as you got up and began working on getting the bullet out of his body. There was no time to fully prepare him for the operation so you ordered your fellow medic to monitor and hold him in place as your forceps made their way into his flesh earning a yelp of pain and slight movement from König.
Minutes had passed when you finally pulled the last fragment of the bullet from his body, the rewarding sound of the hard metal making impact with the other pieces in the tray allowed you to let out a long sigh. “You still with me König?” A low hum is made in response allowing you to continue with, “I’m going to stitch you up now, then you can rest.” Another hum follows and he carefully shifts bracing himself for the needle to pierce his skin. With that you allow the other medic to go fulfill their other duties leaving the room empty with just you and König.
You worked in comfortable silence only breaking it with quiet “I’m sorry”s when he’d react negatively to the metal weaving its way through his skin. Once you had tied off the last stitch you told him he was finished while leaning down to plant a gentle kiss on his sweaty temple. “Let me clean you up and I’ll leave you be,” you stated before walking away to remove your gloves and run a towel under warm water and another under cold water. You came back placing the cold towel on his forehead as best you could with the position he’s in, the other you worked gently across his back cleaning up any remaining blood. Satisfied with your work you discarded of the used towels and went back to König’s form sprawled across a bed slightly too short for him, with the mask off you get to really see the bags under his eyes and how he was fighting sleep to just gaze at you, take in all your features. Gently, you planted another kiss on the corner of his mouth and quietly plead for him to get rest now before you turned to check on the rest of the infirmary, wanting to make sure things have calmed now that night is approaching. That was until you felt a large hand grasp onto your wrist urging you to return to your spot and before you could turn towards König you heard a raspy “stay.”
It felt like your heart broke into a million pieces upon hearing that single word, so you obeyed. Once he let go of you, you found a chair and pulled it up to his bed side, your left hand finding a home in his hair. He always fell asleep fast whenever he’d lay his head in your lap and you played with his thick hair, even though you aren’t in that same position you know the trick will work regardless now wanting him to get much needed rest. Even as his blinking got slow and his eyelids became heavier and heavier with each second he kept his focus fixed on you, taking in your scent and tracing the lines on your face with his eyes until eventually sleep overcame him. König is a peaceful sleeper only letting out the occasional light snore completely countering his large appearance and you always thought it was adorable. Even with extreme fatigue he barely made any sound earning a soft smile from you before you briefly parted ways with his sleeping figure to clean yourself up and ensure the infirmary is indeed empty before you change into normal clothes.
Once you made your round through the infirmary and change into some pajamas officially letting yourself be off duty you found your way back to his side. You kept your hands to yourself this time not wanting to disturb his sleep and instead opted for watching the way his body moves when he breathes deeply, how his hair falls into place perfectly, how his lips are just slightly parted and inviting you to place yours upon them. Whilst doing that you fell into your own slumber only realizing you had done so when the sound of heavy footsteps making their way towards you woke you up. You quickly realized what your position eludes to and you got up to go find the source of the steps.
It was Ghost, he too looked like he needed some rest though you weren’t going to point out his awful sleep schedule. “Is he going to be okay?” It wasn’t uncommon for Ghost to check on his injured comrades yet the single question sent heat to your cheeks. “Yes, he just needs to rest and let his body heal,” you reply sending a quick glance back at König. “Good. I also came for something to relieve a migraine.”
“I recommend some sleep lieutenant,” you joked before continuing with “but I also have some pills you can take, wait here.” You felt his eyes bore into your back as you retrieved some pills and a glass of water returning with them in either hand and holding them out for Ghost to take. Once he was finished he handed the now empty glass to you, gave a dry thank you and flicked his knowing eyes from you to König before returning to where he came from.
The look he gave you replayed in the back of your mind, like he was silently reminding you of the dangers of being in a relationship like yours. You both understood the consequences of loving each other yet neither you nor König cared when you held each other in your arms. The threat of either of you dying abruptly always loomed over your heads but that just encouraged you to love as hard as you can before either of your eventual departures. The thoughts continued to plague your mind, more so now that you consider the very real possibility of König dying in front of you a few hours ago. You returned to your seat staring at your hands for a short while until you saw a larger one take the both of yours. Your gaze slowly met his and you sighed enjoying the small skin to skin contact you got from him. You scooted closer to him, chair now flush with the side of the bed. He began to play with your fingers always finding comfort in it before asking “am I going to make it doc?” You let out a shaky laugh before replying with “barely” letting your eyes fall once more into your lap.
He began to rub your knuckles now before saying a quiet “I’m sorry.” You shook your head and he forced you look at him lifting your head by your chin before once again saying “I’m sorry.” You opened your mouth to say something but he beat you to it, “I should’ve been more careful and for that I’m sorry. I don’t like seeing you worried mein Engel.”
“I know, but these things are expected in our line of work. I’m just glad I get to see you live for another day.” You reply taking his hand from you chin into your own softly kissing his knuckles. He smiled before lightheartedly saying “yes you’re mein Schutzengel, always making sure I’ll never die.” You both chuckled at the comment before finally landing a kiss on the lips, you melt into him not wanting to pull away and find yourself dissatisfied when he eventually does. He laughs at your discontent face before closing his eyes and drifting off to sleep once more, leaving you to take his hand in yours and allow yourself to do the same.
