Work Text:
“Enid,” Wednesday spoke from across the room.
“Hm?”
“Did you sleep with Ajax when you were together?”
Enid’s eyes widened as she looked at Wednesday at her typewriter. After some hesitation she replied. “Yes. I did.”
She could see the way Wednesday clenched her fist a bit tighter. “A lot?”
“Twice.”
Wednesday finally looked at her, her expression softening when she saw the worry on Enid’s face. “Oh.”
“Why?”
“I just was wondering.”
“Do I get to wonder back?”
Wednesday took a breath. “There’s nothing to wonder about. Tyler was my first kiss. You were my second.”
Enid nodded. “Does that…change how you think of me?”
Wednesday stared, blank as ever. “Why would it? It’s very normal for someone our age to have had sex.”
Enid nodded again. “That’s true.”
Then it was silent. Enid looked back at her phone, deciding Wednesday must not want to continue the conversation.
It didn’t come up again, but a few days later Enid returned to their room to find Wednesday pacing. When she entered Wednesday stopped.
“Enid, I think we should break up.”
Enid let her shoulders sag and her bag fall to the floor, but she didn’t let too much disappointment overtake her. This was not the first time Wednesday had tried to break up with her in a panic that could be calmed with a conversation.
“Why?”
“Because you slept with Ajax.”
Tears filled her eyes. “I thought you said it didn’t change the way you thought about me. Do you think I’m a slut now or something?”
Wednesday finally looked a little guilty. “No, of course I don’t. Sluts don’t exist, they were made up by the patriarchy to shame women. But if you are interested in that activity being part of your relationships then I don’t think we should be together.”
Enid softened and stepped forward. “You don’t think you’re ever going to want to sleep with me?”
Wednesday avoided her gaze. “I don’t think so. So we should break up.”
Enid closed the space between them, standing directly in front of the shorter girl now. “And what if that’s okay with me?”
Wednesday, as usual when caught off guard by Enid’s words, froze. “You would want to stay with me even though I don’t think I’ll ever want to sleep with you?”
Enid took a final step and laid her hands on Wednesday’s cheeks, something she did often to convey her seriousness. “Yes.”
Wednesday had the most emotional response Enid had ever seen from her, her eyes filled with tears and her hands came up to rest on Enid’s wrists. Her gaze dropped to the floor. “Really?”
Enid moved a hand to lift Wednesday’s chin. “Yes,” she said again, just as firmly as before, making sure to look directly into her eyes. “I don’t care if you never want to sleep with me, Wednesday. That is not important to me. I would choose being with you over having sex ever again.”
Wednesday was silent.
“So can we not break up? Please?”
Wednesday nodded shyly, lightly pulling Enid’s hands off of her face. “I’m sorry for trying to break up with you without talking about it. Again.”
A small smirk made its way across Enid’s face. “That’s okay. Fifth time’s the charm?”
Wednesday nodded. “Maybe.”
