So Different

Summary:

Imagine being Charles’s adopted human daughter and your boyfriend Kurt Wagner being insecure about your relationship, with him being a mutant and you’re a human.

Work Text:

When it rained, the sound of it felt very calming as you sat on the couch, your head pressed comfortably into the many decoration pillows gathered from around the room. Kurt usually was sitting on an armchair beside you, his tail lifting up a cup of tea onto his lips every so often.

Spending time in the Xavier mansion with your boyfriend Kurt was something you truly treasured. Being adopted by Charles Xavier as a child, you had lived in the mansion for years - and you were the only human there, which usually had the newcomers being scared of you at first - but as they discovered you were the sweetest person possible, they all eventually liked you.

Charles had met you when he took Jean in. You had just been orphaned by a house fire, and even Charles knowing you weren't a mutant - something in you had dug into him. It wasn't pity - he felt like he had known you for years.

As weeks went by and Charles had visited you, and you had formed a strong bond almost immediately - which eventually led Charles adopting you. Of course, everyone was shocked because a mutant adopted a human child, but as they saw how happy you were with him, everyone's doubts melted away and you were let to go with him.

And ever since then, you had lived in the mansion with your father and his students. You had befriended with so many mutants and even found love from one.

But you, being a human, had to go to an ordinary school - and after your classmates saw a polaroid picture of you and Kurt taped onto your locker door, a rumor was quickly spread all around the school - how could a pretty girl like yourself date a blue devil?

When you first heard how Kurt was described, you insisted that he wasn't a devil and that he was sweet, and you pointed out that he was a devoted Catholic, in fact. But that, unfortunately, didn't stop the whispers and rumors that the devil had possessed you, and you got pitiful looks from some students as you walked by them.

And eventually, as a result of unfortunate series of events - Kurt got to know about the looks you got at school, and the reason you got them as he heard you and Charles talking about it in an empty classroom. And it struck him like someone just poured a bucket of ice water on him - people thought he was too different to be with you. And that just made his own feeling stronger, because now it wasn't just in his head - a lot of people agreed with his insecurity.

So when you hadn't seen Kurt for days, and when you did, he teleported away, you knew something was wrong. Usually Kurt was the first one to meet up with you as you came home from school - but now he had stayed hidden from you for days. So naturally, as you finally caught him sitting under a tree and reading a book, you sneaked up and took hold of him as the first thing, so he couldn't teleport away without you - but he just flinched when he saw you, and didn't even try teleporting. He slowly turned his gaze back to his book and you sat on the grass beside him, still keeping your hand on his jacket.

Neither of you spoke for a while, and you just stared at the book Kurt was holding. But when you finally got your mind together again, you slowly took Kurt's large hand in your own and buried your face into his shoulder.

"Why have you been avoiding me?" you muttered against his shoulder and you felt Kurt stiffen at the question, making you lift your gaze up at him, but he looked away the moment he saw your eyes staring at his face. He retreated his hand away from your grasp which caused you to furrow your eyebrows.

"You're a human... you- you deserve someone who doesn't look..." he muttered but you silenced him before he could even properly start.

"You heard me and dad talking."

Kurt nodded. "If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't-"

You shook your head, placing a soft kiss on his cheek. "Do you think I'm dating you only because of how you look? I fell in love what's inside of you. And even before I had even talked to you, I saw a cute boy standing there with Hank and Raven. Definitely not a demon."

Kurt looked down for a moment, examining your hands. His large, three-fingered hand which had long claws in each finger, and your human hand, with nicely trimmed fingernails and five fingers.

He turned to look at you, slowly closing his book. "What if the rumors circling around your school will continue? That I am possessing you? You don't deserve-"

"Do you think I care about those petty little rumors that much? Dad just heard my frustrated thoughts about it and wanted to ask if I'm bullied and is there anything he should help me with." you sighed and gave Kurt's hand a little squeeze. "And even if I did care about the rumors and they would be overwhelming for me, I still would never leave you, not even a question."

Kurt was quiet for a while, before he slowly placed a kiss on your temple. "I don't understand what have I done to deserve someone like you."

"You've been you. That's all it takes." you answered, and Kurt pulled you to lay against his chest and circled his tail around your waist, as he opened his book again. And there you laid together in the park, with your father observing you from the window and smiling softly for his daughter's and Raven's son's happiness. You had proved it once again - how kindness and your love can mend together broken hearts. It wasn't a mutation - but it was a special trait you had always had with everyone.

And because of that, Charles knew it had been the right decision to adopt you all those years ago. You were extraordinary - and that's why everyone in the Xavier Mansion loved you. Charles sighed happily at the sight of you and Kurt, and then he left from the window, leaving you two cuddle under the tree in peace.
