Work Text:

Seeing Loki in that cell felt surreal. You couldn’t believe he was ready to sacrifice everything for the sake of ruling the world. And now he stared at you, waiting for your answer, like he expected you to pull out a key to free him, to help him create more havoc, destroying more lives.

You already felt guilty with being in love with him. You did love him, but you knew you shouldn’t, not after everything he had done. He wouldn’t change, he went too far. When he had been a teenager, his trickster personality was innocent and even adorable, one of the reasons you had fallen in love with him. You remembered putting cockroaches under your teacher’s pillow after she had publicly stated that Loki is a poor example of a respectable Asgardian - you had gotten angry and decided to have revenge on her, and soon you and Loki were running along the hallways, laughing like crazy when you heard your teacher screaming in horror.

You had gotten some discipline actions from Odin and your parents after that, but it had been worth it. And you had always thought that his pranks would stay that way - but instead he decided to take a path of a villain.

“I don’t even know who you are anymore, how do you expect me to love you? To help you?” you whispered, and Loki’s grin dropped. “You deserve being here, you’re dangerous. You almost destroyed Midgard, disrespected your father, tricked your own brother-”

“I get it, I’m a monster.” he scoffed and turned away from you. “Despised by everyone, even by the love of his life. The one he always trusted.”

Tears welled up in your eyes, as you watched Loki walking back to his bed - he wasn’t that man he had pretended to be. For a few centuries, you actually thought he’d change, that he’d learn to respect the simple things in life rather than power, but you always had known deep inside that he’d never change. He’d just break your heart again and again. Even when he loved you more than anyone else, he loved power more.
