My Foolish Heart

Summary:

Hanzo is interrupted while doing the dishes

Notes:

Saw a writing prompt on TikTok and cranked this bad boy out. If you see an error -- no you don't.

Work Text:

Hanzo stands at the counter of the kitchen in the mess hall of Gibraltar, humming quietly to a song as he chips away at the pile of dishes in the sink. The song — something by Frank Sinatra, Hanzo doesn't care enough to really check the title — is loud enough to block out the sounds from outside the kitchen, but not too loud to drown out the archer's thoughts.

And apparently, not loud enough to hide the sound of the kitchen door swinging open. Hanzo pauses, turning to face the door with plate and sponge in hand, and meets the gaze of Cole. The cowboy is carrying a couple dishes of his own, most likely as a cleanup from a small gathering in the dining area. He doesn't say anything as he approaches the sink, just nods and squeezes himself beside Hanzo.

The archer contemplates saying something — like telling the cowboy he can just drop the dishes off and leave — but he stays quiet, turning back to face the sink and paying attention to the plate in his hand. Cole essentially does the same thing, reaching across the sink for a brush so he can get started cleaning out a mug.

Hanzo can feel Cole glancing at him, and does his best to focus on the dishes. He can smell the cigarettes lingering on his breath and can't help but bask in the warmth the cowboy was radiating. Perhaps it was just how close they were, but beside Cole, the archer couldn't help but calm down a little, shoulders untensing as he began to hum along to the music once more.

The cowboy notices, of course. As if staring at Hanzo wasn't one of the only things he was doing. He can hear the archer's breathing, see the small tug upwards at the corners of his mouth as he hums. Cole recognizes the way Hanzo's shoulders relax the way they did when the archer thought he was alone, and thanks anything that's up there that Hanzo felt comfortable enough to relax like that with him.

They work in silence for a while, no sound minus the playlist the archer had on. Hanzo at one point steps to the side to dry and put away dishes. The two fell into a bit of a rhythm, and within no time the sink was down to just a few dishes. By this point Cole had grown a little tired of the work, and turned to watch Hanzo neatly arrange a couple mugs in a cabinet. The archer turns, visibly embarrassed when he sees that Cole was watching him, but relaxes when the cowboy smiles.

The next song plays as Hanzo returns to the sink, and Cole is hit with a brilliant idea. He takes a moment to dry off his hands, before offering one to Hanzo — a clear invitation to dance. Hanzo raises an eyebrow, admittedly a little nervous. He didn't dance — it wasn't that he didn't want to, it just wasn't something he picked up as a kid. Cole seems to recognize the expression, and beckons Hanzo over in a way that reassures him that he'll be alright.

The archer caves, tentatively taking Cole's hand and allowing the cowboy to guide his other one to his shoulder before he places his own on Hanzo's waist. It's a little awkward for a moment as the archer finds himself rather caught off guard by the touch, and his demeanor seems to change, his widened, nervous gaze shifting to one more relaxed as he returns the cowboy's smile.

Cole takes this as a sign to begin to lead the other in a two-step, and it somehow doesn't take long for Hanzo to catch on. His gaze is trained on his feet, but Cole is watching the archer with nothing but adoration.

The song, My Foolish Heart by Frank Sinatra, ensures that the tempo of their dancing is a little livelier than most would expect. Cole puts a little swing in his step and it receives a chuckle from Hanzo when he notices it. As the archer finally gets into the groove he lets go of Cole's hand, wrapping his arms around the cowboy's neck and closing the distance, his face just inches away from Cole's. Cole in return wraps his hands around Hanzo's waist, offering a sly smile to the archer. Hanzo rolls his eyes, well aware that he has fallen for the other's charm, but remains mainly focused on their simple little dance.

"Her lips are much too close to mine, beware my foolish heart." The song rattles on in the background, and Hanzo can't help but notice how close they are. His gaze keeps flitting down to Cole's lips, and he does his best to look away. Cole sees this and is confused as to why Hanzo seems so nervous, especially when Cole had been unabashedly checking him out the whole time. The cowboy hums, a subtle go ahead for the archer.

Hanzo hums in response, steeling himself as he meets Cole's gaze. A smile returns to the archer's face as he realizes how eager Cole looks, and he wastes no time in closing that little gap, hand on Cole's jaw as he melts against the cowboy.

And as the two settle into the kiss, the song nears its end. "This time, it's love my foolish heart."
