Work Text:
You may ask why Joe and Nicky were lying in an attic on Christmas eve looking down at a group of Nazis soldiers, instead of dancing around a Christmas tree?
It all started ten days ago, when they caught a Nazi officer, they were after for killing a family. On the Nazi officer, they found papers telling of a meeting to deal with a town that was too American friendly. After dealing with the Nazi officer, they came up with a plan. Instead of killing the Nazis before the meeting, they would use the meeting to gather information, they might could use later on. That was why Joe and Nicky were lying in the attic looking down at the group of Nazis at this moment because they all knew there were two reasons why it shouldn't be Andy and Booker:
- Andy and Booker didn't have the patience to lay still for days.
- Joe and Nicky were better at picking up the small details that could make the difference between a quick or a long mission.
With that in mind, Andy and Booker were lying low somewhere near the house, ready to help if needed. Their job was also to count how many people came and left, find out what weapons they had, and vehicles.
At this point, Joe and Nicky had been lying in the attic for six days. There was no room to move at all, so they were lying on their stomachs. It wasn't the longest time they had tried to not move. One time back in the 15th century, they spent four long weeks on their backs when they were lying under a floor also trying to gather information. The trick was to ignore your sleeping limps and your sore stomach or back. They hadn't brought much food or water with them, because they also had no access to a bathroom or a bush.
You may also ask, how did Joe and Nicky get up to that attic?
There wasn't access from the living room, so when they came to the single-floor house they made a hole in the ceiling in one of the bedrooms near the wall just big enough for them to crawl up into the attic. Then Andy and Booker pushed a bookcase so it covered the hole before they made a mess in the room, so it looked like the family who once lived in the house had left in a hurry. They did the same thing in every single room in the house. They just got out of the house when they saw vehicles getting nearer. While the first Nazi soldiers were getting the house ready for the meeting, Joe and Nicky moved around the best they could in the cramped space. As they were making a peephole so they could see down into the living room, they just hoped they had guessed correctly. The day after they got their answer when a table was placed just under them.
Nicky's job was trying to remember as much as he could from the different maps the Nazis used with different positions, while Joe's job was trying to remember as much he could from the Nazis' plan to attack the town. Along the way, they also learned other things.
Now on day six, it was clear that the Nazis were done planning their attack when women showed up and the Nazis started to party with them. In the attic, they could hear all the noise coming from down below them. Joe rolled his eyes when it became clear that one of the Nazis was having sex with a woman in the room to his right. It wasn't because of the sex, Joe was rolling his eyes. It was the lack of romance in it. Nicky smiled at Joe before kissing his hand. If they moved their heads they would hit the beam above them.
It was first when they heard "Silent Night" in German that it became clear to them that it was Christmas. It was there Joe found an orange and started to peel it. The smell of orange filled the cramped space and when Joe handed Nicky half of the orange, Nicky gave Joe's hand another kiss before Joe kissed Nicky's hand.
"Merry Christmas!" Joe whispered. "Love you."
"Merry Christmas!" Nicky whispered. "Love you."
They shared their Christmas meal in silence while enjoying the music. It wasn't so bad a Christmas after all because they were together. It took further two days before they came down from the attic and it was thanks to the information Joe and Nicky had gathered, they were able to prevent the attack on the town.
