it was another one of those quarterly projects where the teachers partnered students to complete it together and you were always anxiously looking forward to this in hopes of getting partnered with your crush
"y/n and mitsuya" mitsuya's eyebrows quirked in surprise and he let out a soft smile, turning his head a bit towards you and glancing towards you to see your reaction
he doesn't want the others to know, but he has a really cute crush on you. he finds you very warm and nice that you remind him of the warm feeling he gets when he sews something for his sisters, you remind him of the excitement he felt when toman was just recently formed and he made the gang uniform by hand for the founding members, and you remind him of his mother who, arriving from work at a friday night, would smile at him and thank him for taking care of his sisters while she was busy
it's a puppy crush he has on you and knowing that you get to be his partner brings an uncontained smile to his face. he stands up and walks towards you
he can't forget how you caringly inquired about his well-being right after he got back at school when he was gone due to a gang fight. he can't forget how politely you gave him the homework that he missed, and he can never help but feel the butterflies in his stomach when you offered him your help to tutor him on the lectures that he missed (to which he denied because he doesn't want to abuse your kindness)
he never interacted with you like this before, it was always quick hellos and goodbyes
that's why seeing you sigh in dejection made him instantly frown
did you not want him as a partner?
you're mitsuya takashi's crush, but he wasn't yours
you always were attracted to guys who play soccer– who are athletic. someone who has a very charming smile, and especially someone who has a very goofy personality. it's no wonder you have a very big crush on your classmate who's a star soccer player at your school

you looked at your best friend in the classroom as if saying 'it's here!' before sneaking a peek at your crush who has his chair tipped back and boyishly smiling at the teacher
then you hear your name, "y/n and mitsuya" and you can't help but sigh in disappointment. oh well, better luck next time. you slumped on your chair waiting for the teacher to finish
after everyone's names are called, she gives the class the rest of the time to work on the project
you stand up with your pen and notebook in hand to go to mitsuya but he was already walking towards you with a soft smile, "hey" and says your name. you greet him back with a small smile, still feeling a bit down about the outcome. you watch him pull the chair from the table beside you and sit just next to you
he's sitting so close to you that your shoulders are almost touching. normally you would have blushed and said that you're not used to close contact but you let it slide since you're not in the mood to be all blushy and friendly
"so do you have an idea of what we should work on?" you ask. he leans his elbows on your table and faces you with a soothing smile
he shakes his head and asks you if you have an idea in return
mitsuya has something in mind for the project. the cheeky side of him wants to mess with you and see your thinking face so he decided not to share yet. he wants to see how you bite your pen and furrow your eyebrows, and he really wants to witness up close how you would suddenly chirp an 'oh!' almost like a light bulb has suddenly lit up
and that's exactly what he saw moments later after brainstorming. your bashful smile would beam at him as your excitement got to you and he just shakes his head, giving you a compliment about how unique your idea for the project is and how he's looking forward to working with you
he gets your number later on, saying that he needs it so that you two can just hit each other up without needing to talk at school. but inside, he's elated. he's overjoyed by the fact that he got your number and he can just text you – maybe even call you. then he'd hear your voice up close through the phone
it's just a one-sided crush anyway. he's not expecting much from this partnership you have with the school project. just having to talk to you is enough. to have you near him as you go on about the next step to take on the project, to see you with your mischievous eyes as you whisper to him how you saw the other group's work before you let out a snicker and say that your and mitsuya's work is better
he doesn't mind if what he has with you is nothing more than just friendship, you two are young. however, if he's being honest, he does hope to score a date with you after all this
