Mikasa wasn’t sure if she was the luckiest girl or the unluckiest.
“-They’re better dipped in coffee, actually, but if I have coffee this late I’m gonna be all squirrelly later and my dad’s not gonna be happy about that.”
How many times had she imagined being alone with Sasha like this? None of those scenarios had ever involved her needing to get her Lexus jumped in a near-empty mall parking lot, but Mikasa wasn’t one to look a gift horse in the mouth.
“But it just feels wrong, y’know? Like, if I’m gonna go out of my way to grab donuts from the fancy shop, I oughta get coffee to go with them. Otherwise, it’s incomplete!”
Sure, it was freezing outside and her parents were absolutely going to murder her for being late to their annual Christmas party (doubly so when they found out it was because she’d left her lights on while working a late shift for a job she didn’t even really need), but it had been weeks since she’d last seen Sasha, one of the best friends she’d made in college and the object of a rapidly-burgeoning, intensely embarrassing crush.
“‘Kasa! Are you listening to me?”
“Huh?” Mikasa felt a traitorous blush begin to creep across her cheeks as hearing Sasha say her name pulled her out of her lovestruck reverie. “Oh, I’m sorry. You were talking about the donuts?”
Sasha was currently munching on the donuts in question straight from the box as the two waited for the battery of Mikasa’s car to charge while it was hooked up to Sasha’s ancient-looking and dirt-encrusted pickup. Mikasa knew the shop Sasha had gotten them from, though it wasn’t exactly what she’d call ‘fancy’. Even though she normally wouldn’t allow food in her car and the other girl was getting powdered sugar all over her nice leather seats, she couldn’t bring herself to complain. Sasha was helping her out, after all (making herself late to her own family’s Christmas party in the process), and she was simply too cute and endearing to be mad at.
“Yeah, I know, they’re supposed to be for the party.” Sasha mumbled around her mouthful, “But they’re so much better when they’re hot! Besides, I’m gonna end up eating most of them, anyways…”
Mikasa smiled, even as her eyes found themselves drawn to a sprinkling of white sugar that had made its home on the corner of Sasha’s mouth. If only she could press her lips against it and get it off…
“You’re sure you don’t want one?”
“Yeah, I’m good.” Mikasa forced her gaze away as she looked down to her manicured hands as they twisted in her lap. “Thanks again for giving my car a jump. I’m sorry I’m making you late to your party.”
Sasha shrugged with her usual cheerfulness. “It’s okay, really! Honestly, I’m kinda over the holiday season at this point, y’know? Family around all the time, hurrying to get all the preparations finished, finding money for gifts…it’s nice, but you can have too much of a good thing.” She added with a little chuckle that sent Mikasa’s heart fluttering.
Everything about Sasha was just so lovely , from her thick, chestnut hair to her round, freckled cheeks to her too-loud laugh. Mikasa wasn’t the type to fall for someone quickly, but she’d fallen for her classmate hard and fast. Sasha was everything she wasn’t: Outgoing, boisterous, lively, and sweet. Though she could be a bit ditzy from time to time, Mikasa knew how hard the girl worked to put herself through college, maintaining an athletic scholarship on the school’s archery team and working multiple jobs throughout the semester.
“Yeah, I get that.” Mikasa murmured. “My grandma’s going to be pestering me all night, asking me when I’m going to bring a nice boy home with me…”
“Ugh, I hear that.” Sasha huffed. “Honestly, who needs ‘em! I’d rather hang out with my best girl right here.”
If Sasha’s very presence in her car wasn’t enough to make her heart pound and her knees weak, that definitely was, especially when coupled with the playful shove she gave her. It sent a pleasant buzzing sensation radiating all throughout her body that she knew she would still be feeling even after the other girl was long gone.
Mikasa leaned over to brush the faint dusting of powdered sugar from Sasha’s lips. Only when her eyes met Sasha’s wide, brown gaze did she realize herself. There was that damn blush again. Mikasa quickly withdrew and coughed awkwardly, dusting her fingers off on her dress.
“S-sorry.” She mumbled. “Force of habit?”
“Aw, that’s okay, ‘Kasa! Thanks for getting it for me, that would’ve been embarrassing.”
Sasha glanced at her phone and, much to Mikasa’s disappointment, pushed the passenger’s side door open, letting a chilly blast of December air into the car.
“It’s been about twenty minutes, so your battery should be all good now. Just let me know if you get stranded by the side of the road somewhere! I’d be more than happy to help.”
“Y-yeah! Thank you again, Sasha.” Realizing she might never get the opportunity to do it again and struck with a sudden bolt of bravery and determination, Mikasa ducked forward to press the quickest, lightest little peck on Sasha’s cheek. Chaste though it was, it was enough to send her heart pounding at a maddening pace.
When she pulled away, bracing herself for the inevitable expression of confusion (or, at worst, disgust) on Sasha’s face, she was pleasantly surprised to find only a cheery, dopey smile. Maybe even a hint of a blush, too, though Mikasa chalked that up to the cold.
“Thanks! Uh, I mean, for thanking me, I guess.” Sasha laughed awkwardly, her fingers tapping against the side of the donut box. “Here, take one for the road!”
Before Mikasa could refuse, a donut was pressed into her hands as Sasha retrieved her jumper cables and skipped back to her vehicle. Unable to resist, Mikasa took a bite. Maybe it
wasn’t
the fanciest, but it was sweet and delicious. The memory of the flavor would stay with her for the rest of break as she looked forward to seeing Sasha in class once more.
