Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire (Gilgamesh x Reader)

Summary:

(orig. posted to my writing Tumblr atomwritez 12/14/22)

What could be better than sitting by an open fire on a cold night? Toasting winter treats with your beloved, of course.

Work Text:

this time of year was the most perfect for you and gilgamesh. there was nothing either of you liked more than being bundled up in sweaters while on the couch, watching a holiday movie or just a classic that you both love. or walking around the small town you lived near, looking at the light displays or the window decorations put up by store owners. but for the two of you, there was one activity that bested them all.

you sat outside one night, bundled in warm clothes as the stars twinkled above you. in front of you was a roaring fire, illuminating your face and keeping you warm as well, and the smell was like heaven. you could hear faint bustling from inside as you reclined in your seat, and you exhaled slowly. the world felt at peace, and like there was nothing anyone could do to change that. behind you, you heard the sliding glass door open, and out came gilgamesh, carrying several things in his arms. you tilted your head as he came around, gently setting the things down on one of the tables you’d set up in your backyard, and he took his seat beside you.

“what’s all this?” you asked, shifting in your seat to look at him.

“i figured that this time of year called for a very special treat,” he replied, and you smiled a bit as you looked to the fire.

“and what might that be?” you asked.

“i thought we could roast some chestnuts, perhaps some marshmallows, and just enjoy each other’s company for a while,” he said, and you nodded with another smile.

“you know what? that sounds absolutely perfect. but … how do you roast a chestnut, exactly? marshmallows makes sense, but i’ve never roasted nuts on open flames before,” you said.

“that’s where this comes in handy.” he reached over to a wire rack and held it up, then set it over the open flame. then, as you watched as he carefully arranged the chestnuts on the rack.

“that’s … a lot easier than i thought it would be. have i ever told you how smart you are?” you asked as you reached for a pair of wooden sticks and a bag of marshmallows.

“you mention it every so often, darling,” he replied, and you laughed. you tore into the bag and grabbed two of the marshmallows, pushing them onto the skewers, then held one out to your husband, which he took from you gently. then, with one arm, he scooped you up and took your seat, settling you onto his lap as you laughed and snuggled up to him. you were almost tempted to remove some of your heavier winter clothing, because when the love of your life was a human furnace of cosmic energy, who needed a sweater?

“i love you,” you said softly as you held your skewered marshmallow over the flames not hindered by the chestnuts.

“i love you more,” he said, tilting his head up to press a soft kiss to your cheek. after your marshmallows were toasted and eaten, he was careful as he leaned forward to check on the roasting nuts. he gave a satisfied nod and took one from the rack, and the crisp night air helped it cool faster.

“here, try the first one,” he said, holding it out for you. you took it gingerly, the food warm against the tips of your fingers, and you popped it into your mouth. you hummed as you chewed, the smokey flavors dancing on your tongue as you ate it.

“glad they turned out all right,” he said, and you nodded, so he ate one of his own. you sat in comfortable silence with one another, eating your holiday treats as the stars twinkled above. there was no better way to spend your winter nights.
