Growing Team

Work Text:

The sun was shining over the military base, awaiting the arrival of two agents from an overseas base. Inside whispers of a new criminal organization filled the base. No one besides the guard at the back entrance noticed the two soldiers approaching the base. The younger of the two had verdant green eyes framed by his curly brown hair. The thing that really stood out about him was the pair of cat ears and tail. The older man had gray hair that was tied into a ponytail behind him. Unlike his friend he hid his eyes behind a gray blindfold. “Do you think this is the right place?” The older soldier asked looking down at the letter in his hand. “I think so. I wish we were given more directions but what can you do.” Was the response from his friend. They were too distracted to notice the soldier approaching them from the base. “Are you Avrem and Stampy?” The soldier asked the new arrivals. Peeking behind the soldier Avrem noticed that no one else seemed to notice their presence. “We got a message from the general asking for some assistance.” Avrem responded handing the soldier the letter. The soldier read over the letter not looking up from the page. After he finished the soldier handed the letter back before motioning to Stampy and Avrem.

As they entered the army base all the soldiers finally noticed them, though not in the way they hoped. Avrem noticed the looks they gave Stampy as they walked past. With a sigh he turned towards the soldiers and held the stare for several seconds. Even though his eyes were covered his message was clear. It wasn’t long before they reached the tent that the general was in. “I’ll let him know that the two of you have arrived. I have a feeling that he needs to talk to you.” The soldier said before slipping inside the tent.

Inside the tent the general was looking at the files scattered all over the desk. It took him several seconds to notice the soldier waiting for him. “General the two recruits you requested have arrived at the base and are waiting outside the tent.” The soldier explained. The general silently organized the papers and slipped them into a single folder. “You can head back to your post now. On your way you can send them in for me.” The general responded. Without missing a beat the soldier left the tent and headed back to his post. Seconds later the front of the tent opens as Stampy and Avrem enter. The general slides the file across the table. Stampy grabs the file and begins looking over the papers inside. “You two showed up just in time. Now I know that you just arrived but I need some help with a mission investigating a series of stolen artifacts. You will be working with Henry, Ellie, and Charles as they are our best agents after taking out the Toppats during their first mission together.” The general explained. “I couldn’t help but notice that there’s not much information about the cases or who might be behind them.” Stampy said handing the file to Avrem. The general didn’t respond as he already knew that simple fact.

Avrem placed his hand on Stampy’s shoulder and moved him towards the door. “You will find them in the center of the base. Be careful out there as we don’t know what you’ll be facing.” The general said before the two of them left the tent in search of their teammates.

In the center of the base Henry paces impatiently. “Henry you need to calm down. Why are you so worried about having a couple of extra teammates?” Charles said as he closed the hatch to the engine. “You see that’s the problem. They’re still not here and it just doesn’t feel right when it isn’t just the three of us.” Henry responded. His response surprised Charles as Henry never talked much during the time they knew each other. Before he could really process it Avrem and Stampy approached them. “Looks like we’re all here now. It’s a pleasure to meet you guys after reading about the things that you accomplished.” Charles said as he got into the pilot’s chair. “If you don’t mind can we see what’s under your blindfold?” Ellie asked Avrem. Avrem sighed and glanced around the area. The sight of all the soldiers made him uneasy. “Once we are out of sight from prying eyes I’ll show you. I’d rather not have these guys judge us anymore than they already have.” Avrem explained. While he was talking Henry had already boarded the helicopter. Ellie looked at the helicopter and shook her head as a smile crept on her face. Not wanting to waste anymore time the three of them boarded the helicopter to officially start the mission.
