Work Text:
Wednesday Addams will not be defeated by something so simple as height. Just because she lacks a few inches doesn't mean she'll let that stop her, nor does it mean she needs pity or help. Nope. Wednesday Addams doesn't need any help with her height, no matter how long it takes she'll find a solution all on her own... Eventually. After all, it's not as if she hasn't been this height for most of her life.
Enid Sinclair on the other hand will not allow Wednesday to struggle nor accept no as an answer. If she spots her pocket sized roomie struggling you can bet your left leg that she isn't going to watch her struggle. Though Enid respects Wednesday's boundaries and is well aware that the Addams' doesn't want help, she still offers anyway and waits for the girl to eventually cave and allow her to help. Though Enid had never really realised how much the girl struggles until recently. Ever since the whole thing with that dead pilgrim and everything else Wednesday and Enid seemed to grow closer, developing a stronger sort of bond knowing that both girls risked their lives for one another. Not to mention that Enid wolfed out for the first time ever just to protect Wednesday from that bastard monster that Enid would much prefer not to name. So of course Enid's going to go out of her way to ensure that Wednesday doesn't have to struggle, anyone would do the same. The girl saved the school and thousands of people for crying out loud!
One of Wednesday's battles includes reaching a jacket off of the top shelf in her closet. She had been on the tips of her toes with her arm fully stretched out as she swiped for the jacket, aiming to at least snag the sleeve of it down. She'd tried jumping up to grab it but to no avail. She'd even tried using a stick to get it down but all that did was make a mess and get her a few noise complaints. At this very moment Enid was watching the girl drag a chair into her closet to reach the damn thing. She had been watching the whole thing go down since the moment Wednesday decided she wanted the jacket. Who'd have thought The Wednesday Addams - the same girl that took down a frigging undead evil pilgrim, their murderous teacher, and put up a good fight with a monster and stood her ground against the local Sherriff - would have so much trouble grabbing a single jacket off of a shelf? The girl can solve a paranormal murder investigation case but can't find a solution to getting her jacket off of the top shelf. How did the jacket even get up there in the first place?
Enid gave out an amused huff as she walked up to Wednesday's closet, struggling to conceal a grin. "Hey Wednesday, do you need some help?"
"No. I'm fine. I don't need any help, Enid." Wednesday strained as she climbed upon the chair she'd pulled in the small room with her.
"Alright." The blonde couldn't conceal her grin any longer when she saw that Wednesday still couldn't reach the shelf, even when stood on the chair. She attempted a few hops then sighed heavily in frustration. "So, wanna reconsider my offer yet or~?"
Another sigh of frustration before the Addams crawled off of her chair and pushed it out of the way for Enid. She glanced at the werewolf and nodded ever so slightly, finally letting Enid help.
The girl's bubbly blonde roommate strolled into her closet and casually plucked the jacket off of the shelf and handed it to Wednesday in no longer than 3 seconds. The black haired girl had been trying for over an hour.
Wednesday slid said offending fabric over her shoulders and let out a steady breath as she fixed her composure and thanked Enid. She then passed the girl and headed out of the room, presumably on yet another investigation of hers. Almost as if she hadn't been fruitlessly struggling for an hour, though it's just like Wednesday to act as if nothing's just happened. Unless it involves something morbid that is.
Enid shrugs then leaves the room herself to go find Yoko so she can share the latest gossip with the vampire.
Next Enid finds Wednesday struggling to keep up with Xavier as the two were walking, Xavier's steps being long strides compared to Wednesday's attempt at long strides. The girl was lagging behind more and more and the boy hadn't even noticed. Enid decided not to question what the two were talking about as it had previously mostly been Wednesday just pointing accusations and Xavier attempting to defend himself, the werewolf found it hard to imagine them talking about anything else though she hoped that Wednesday wasn't doing any interrogation on the artist again.
Enid stood not far with Yoko, they had been in a conversation about Bianca's relationship status with the Mayor's son until the blonde noticed the dark and gloomy student from her peripheral. She excused herself from Yoko, after having the vampire call her attention 5 times before she got a response, and quickly caught up to Wednesday and Xavier. Without so much as a second thought Enid simply scooped Wednesday up in her arms, bridal style, and jogged slightly to catch up with Xavier. It had clearly caught Wednesday off guard because the girl had taken a few seconds to react and only when Wednesday reacted did Enid realise what she was doing. There cradled in Enid's arms was a surprisingly flustered Wednesday who seemed to be as stiff as a brick, upon seeing such a sight Enid couldn't help but also feel herself stiffen as her cheeks flushed to a similar shade of bright red. All three of them stopped still, Wednesday and Enid had yet to break eye contact and Xavier was as lost as ever. It took the artist clearing his throat for Enid to burst back to life.
"W-Wednesday! Fancy seeing you here!"
"Enid, we are literally on school grounds and you literally have me in your arms." Wednesday states as flat as ever yet there seems to be a slight wobble to the end of her sentence.
"Shit... Okay, so let me explain. I saw you struggling to keep up with Xavier and thought I'd help you keep up!" The blonde had blurted so quickly that Wednesday almost missed what she was saying. Almost.
"I didn't ask for any help." Wednesday grumbled, she then crossed her arms, "And you can't surely be planning on carrying me around every time I'm lagging behind someone, Enid-."
"I don't hear you telling me to put you down~" Enid drawls.
"Right. Yeah, whatever this is I'm not questioning it. Do you still want to know about that abandoned building or not?" Xavier interrupted, waiting for Wednesday to get back on topic.
The girl nodded then gestured for Enid to follow him.
Another struggle defeated if Enid dare say so herself.
Another time, Enid was sitting in class when Bianca elbowed her lightly and gestured her head to the bookcase in the corner of the class.
"I think your roommate needs some help." Was all she said before turning off to go talk to some of the other students.
Enid looked to the bookcase to see Wednesday staring down a book on the top shelf. If looks could kill then Enid could guarantee that the book and the case it was stood in would very much be dead, well technically both were already dead so she's not that far off. The blonde slides off of her chair and skips towards the Addams, clasping her hands around her back and leaning forward next to Wednesday's ear when she gets close enough.
"Howdy roomie! Need some help?"
"Enid." The girl responds, slowly turning to face her. "I may be in need of assistance, yes. This case is taller than my closet..."
"Which book is it your after?" Her blonde hair bounced around as she looked up and down the highest shelves of the bookcase.
"The one that looks like the scales of an emerald tree boa snake."
Enid handed Wednesday the book and was met with a nod and another thank you before she took off out of the room again.
Enid felt another nudge from behind, turning to see Bianca once more. She raised an eyebrow at her and the siren smirked in return.
"You're like Wednesday's height knight or something. Every time I see her struggling to reach something you're always the first over to help her."
"Of course, she's my friend! Why wouldn't I help her?"
"Mhm, 'friend'. Anyways see you round, tell Wednesday I said hi."
"A-Alright, bye?"
Regardless of Enid's confusion she still counts it as a win on helping Wednesday, she didn't even put up a fight with her this time.
About an hour after helping Wednesday with the bookcase she found the girl attempting to involve herself in a conversation with two classmates. For a few brief moments Enid was filled with pride till she realised the girl was most likely about to interrogate them. She watched for about 5 minutes as the two students continued conversing, not seeming to give Wednesday a second thought as she stood in-between them. She watched for a little longer before she realised that the students weren't ignoring her but had literally just not seen her. Before Enid could come to help though, Wednesday had interrupted their conversation and startled the shit out of both of them.
The pair were looking around them to find the source of the voice and just missing the top of Wednesday's head. Enid had heard them put it to being a ghost and really began to question why everyone's so surprised that a person can be as violent as Wednesday. Wednesday seemed to cock an eyebrow at their lack of notice and seemed to be enjoying it? Enid knew there was only one reason Wednesday would seem to enjoy something and that's if she had some form of dark intention or idea. She had seriously begun to fear for the lives of the two students. She watched as Wednesday gestured to Thing in the corner behind the door. Wait Thing was hiding in the room? Who was Enid kidding, of course Thing was in the room. He's Wednesday's 'loyal servant' after all! Thing made his way over to the students feet and proceeded to mess with their laces, once he was done he climbed up Wednesday and hid in her bag. Wednesday then spoke once more, causing the students to startle again but this time both of them had noticed her and attempted to take a step back each. At this point Enid had realised what Thing had done and that was tying their laces together which in turn caused them to tumble to the floor upon their movements.
Ah. Wednesday, ever the one for revenge.
Yet another time was once again in class.
Wednesday had been called up to the front to solve an equation on the board. It was obvious the girl knew the solution. Only issue was, when Wednesday had gotten to the front of the class and was ready to write on the board she discovered she couldn't quite reach the equation. Enid had never seen someone so done with the world until she saw how Wednesday looked right now.
The girl reached on her tiptoes but found it hard to write a clear answer from the angle she was on, she then proceeded to attempt to hop but was met with the same result. She seemed to consider pulling up a chair but shook her head at the thought. Wednesday stopped for a moment then took a rather deep inhale before she had settled for writing on the lower part of the board, leaving an awkward gap between the equation and the solution. Of course the girl nailed it, it had just been a bit more difficult to see from the back where Enid was situated with Yoko.
The teacher apologised for the struggle and proceeded to praise Wednesday for her knowledge. The girl was top of the class for a reason so of course she knew the solution, it came as a surprise for nobody.
She then went back to her desk and sat next to Eugene who attempted a high five with the girl. Wednesday stared at his hand for a moment and Enid began to pout at the idea of Wednesday leaving someone hanging but was surprised to see Wednesday's hand timidly reach out to gently high five Eugene. Her roommate really was evolving.
Another thing Enid notices is that Wednesday is perfect ruffle height.
Whenever someone's in the midst or finishing a light hearted conversation with the girl and she makes them giggle it seems natural to reach out and ruffle the girl's hair. Enid herself has found herself doing it multiple times, and each time the deadpan look matched with the messed up fringe makes Enid giggle even more. Some of Enid's favourite memories with little miss doom and gloom are like this, featuring the hair ruffle. This only seems to have started with everyone after their return this semester. Perhaps it's due to discovering Wednesday has a heroic side where she's willing to put her life on the line for others or perhaps it's just because the girl seems to be a bit more well known now and people aren't as scared she'll kill them and feed them to her pets? Well, people are still very scared of her doing that but not as much as they previously had been before this semester.
Enid's even caught Bianca and Eugene doing it once. Bianca seemed to regret it more then most people do and perhaps that's due to Bianca seeing Wednesday kill and torture people first hand, or maybe it's due to her knowing that Wednesday isn't afraid to enact revenge on her, who knows?
And the other remaining things Enid has noticed about Wednesday and her height is how she seems to vanish when she takes off her shoes in the dorm. One moment she could be making eye contact with the girl whilst discussing their latest homework and taking their shoes off and the next she knows Wednesday's no longer at eye level.
She could walk into the room and completely miss the fact her roommate is in the room when Wednesday isn't wearing her platforms. Its like when a black cat closes it's eyes in the dark, she completely loses sight of her.
She's glad she sees Wednesday wearing her shoes most of the time or else Enid would have some serious neck issues with all the looking down.
It's like knowing there's a spider in your room that was there seconds ago that just vanished upon blinking and you know it's still around you just can't see where. That is the exact feeling you get when Wednesday takes off her shoes. And in Enid's defence that fear has good reason, after all this is Wednesday Addams we're talking about here! She could come out of anywhere and attack you!
Though Enid must admit this is an issue she can't find a solution for, it's not her fault the girl's the size of a tree frog! She even blends in with her dark side of the room!
Granted Enid does enjoy an excuse to help Wednesday, she saviours each memory and houses it deep in her mind to keep her smiling. Though if Wednesday ever found out her contact name was "Pocket Sized Roomie" on Enid's phone she'd surely never see the light of day again.
And for those wondering, yes. Enid did make it a habit to carry Wednesday around when she noticed she couldn't keep up.
