Chapter 1: Woe Is The Loneliest Number
Chapter Text
“I can’t wait to crush Ophelia Hall tomorrow and watch her werewolf roommate crumble.”
If Wednesday Addams had been a fraction less restrained (And if Thing had not already had his iron grip on the teen’s shoulder), Bianca Barclay would not have made it to the Poe Cup the next morning.
The snide remarks and intolerable sarcasm had barely pinched a nerve in Wednesday’s untouchable emotional wiring - honestly because the raven-haired girl somewhat respected the siren for having that level of irritation -, but threatening Enid brought up something different, something more primal than the Addams was used to.
It was the twinge in her stomach she’d felt when she’d found Pugsley tucked away in a locker, tied up with an apple in his mouth.
Almost a familial instinct to protect.
The Addams Family Curse that Wednesday had tried so hard to evade.
But even so, it did not make sense in Wednesday’s calculating thoughts. Enid was not an Addams and therefore should not derive such instincts from the cold and collected girl.
But it did, and as an Addams, Wednesday could not ignore that instinct.
“It’s gonna be a Poe Cup finale to remember.”
Bianca’s tone was one Wednesday was familiar with. Determination with a tone of ecstasy at the thought of completing something absolutely terrifyingly beautiful.
“I hate to think what you’ve got planned.”
Xavier was right, but not for the reason the Addams had in mind. Whatever Bianca was planning, Wednesday would exploit. The siren was smart, but by either trait or by skill, Wednesday knew she was smarter.
However, the Addams found herself somewhat respecting Bianca’s resilience. The two had things in common, whether or not they would admit it. Bianca was a challenge, one Wednesday thoroughly enjoyed.
What she enjoyed more, however, was winning .
“I like to win, is that so wrong?”
Evidently, so did Barclay.
Wednesday turned her head quietly as thing tapped out “Warn. Enid.” on her shoulder. The raven-haired girl nodded and waited patiently under the bed as Bianca exited the room.
Waiting for Xavier to leave his stupor took remarkably longer, however it gave Wednesday time to think.
No one, and especially not Barclay, got to threaten Wednesday and get away with it.
More importantly, no one dare threaten Enid while Wednesday was there without a severe threat to their life.
Bianca Barclay may have won every other Poe Cup since she’d attended the school, but fun fact about champions: Eventually, they all get replaced.

“ Where have you been!? I’m literally having a heart attack right now!”
So warning her over-enthusiastic roommate would have to wait.
Wednesday could tell how Enid restrained herself from completely throwing herself on the dark-clothed girl.
She almost missed the attempt. Almost regretted her own physical uncomfort as Enid’s hands dropped stiffly by her sides, figiting with her orange, pink, and white striped sweater.
Wednesday bit her lip.
Almost.
Just like she almost missed the way Enid’s lips flinched upwards as soon as Wednesday had entered the room, just to settle back down in a pout as she explained:
“Yoko’s in the infirmary!”
Oh, it took everything in the Addams’ will not to smile. The only problem she had with the vampire was the Enid-Givin Title of “Best Friend.” Call it jealousy - though Wednesday would personally murder anyone who said it to her face - or a competitive drive, Yoko Tanaka was not worthy of that title in the Addam’s eyes.
Needless to say the raven-haired girl was slightly amused at the vampire’s misfortune.
But voicing that thought would only upset Enid further.
So instead, she asked:
“What happened?”
“Garlic bread incident at dinner.”
Ah.
“She had a major allergic reaction. She’s out of the Poe Cup, and I don’t have a co-pilot!”
Oh, this was what Enid was upset about?
Somewhere in her dark heart, Wednesday felt a twisted relief that the werewolf was more concerned about the cup than the welfare of her “bestie”. It was so unlike Enid to care less about her friends, but then again, the blonde had been hyper-fixated on the Poe Cup, maybe this was the cause of her current distraction.
Thinking the word, Wednesday was reminded of the real reason she had bothered Enid anyway.
“It wasn’t an accedent. Bianca’s behind it.”
“How do you know?”
“Doesn’t matter.” She replied without missing a beat.
Enid’s suspision slowly dissipated. Of course the werewolf wouldn’t put it passed her to sabotage her team. Wednesday hadn’t really given her reason to think otherwise. Maybe, against her better judgement, it was time to change that.
Where the notion had come from, Wednesday really didn’t know. Nor did she know why exactly she wanted to help her bubbly “roomie”, but she did. And an Addams was determined if anything.
“You and I are going to take her down tomorrow.” The words were out of her mouth before she truely registered them.
What have I gotten myself into?
“Wait…” Enid always was a bit slow on the uptake. Something Wednesday would keep in mind. “You’re joining the Black Cats?”
If Wednesday was capable of showing emotion, she would’ve rolled her eyes.
“You’re wiling to do that? For me ?”
A tingling feeling somewhat close to spiders crawling on her skin settled deep inside Wednesday’s stomach.
Of course she would do it for Enid. Who wouldn’t?
The blonde’s bright blue eyes seemed to slice right through Wednesday’s dark ones, leaving her wondering which was sharper: Enid’s stare or her claws.
Enid had some bark, but Wednesday was also beginning to see her “bite”.
She was not exactly disappointed.
“If I wasn’t I wouldn’t have suggested the thought.”
Wednesday answered, but Enid looked much too happy about the reply, so she added:
“More importantly, I want to humiliate Bianca so badly that the bitter taste of defeat burns in her throat.”
Enid paused.
“Yeah, but mostly you’re doing it because we’re friends, right?”

Wednesday Addams deeply regreted her life choices.
Sure, maybe being in the Poe Cup gave her more time to spend with Enid, but by her late scorpion’s grave, the goddamn costume got to her.
Wednesday was just lucky it was in her color pallet. Or lack thereof.
Enid had gone to “hang with Yoko” as she’d stated after their big victory, leaving Wednesday alone with her thoughts.
And Thing.
But who was keeping track.
She was nearly finished with her twenty seventh chapter of her novel. Viper de la Muerte had just uncovered a crucial detail about the serial killer haunting her family’s town. It was one of the higher, more “action-packed” scenes Wednesday would write, therefore - by default - making it somewhat easier to get down on paper, but for a reason she just could not name, the Addams was at a block.
She never hit “writer’s blocks”, always projecting - sometimes more than others - into her writing to keep herself active in the story, always changing the plotlines and making sure her writing was immaculate as her own vocabulary.
Writing had always been her way to…
The words wouldn’t come to her mind, at least not any that made sense.
She felt no emotions, and nothing got to her, so saying she was “coping” wasn’t quite accurate, as there was nothing to cope with.
Other than her annoyance with the low education of classmates, the self-loathing she’d picked up after her first real loss with Bianca, the constant suspects and threats on her life, and the massive psychotic serial killing monster in the woods.
More often than not, a certain blonde werewolf plagued her thoughts, popping up in her mind everytime she noticed a strip of color.
Wednesday had long since stopped typing, her head resting gently on her hand.
She’d never really been in this position before, both mentally and physically.
She’d never really felt…stuck.
Wednesday blamed Enid’s side of the room for giving her a headache.
A few more clicks and the paper was out of the machine and into the box to her right.
The events of the last few days flooded back into her mind, from the first second she’d stepped foot in Ophelia Hall to waking up in the infirmary after Xavier threw her out of the way of a falling statue to the instantaneous dread she’d felt when Enid had said “costume”.
Enid, her bright, bubbling, way-too-much-color, always-bouncing, skips-when-she-walks roommate. How someone as dark and boring as herself had ever ended up paired together, Wednesday did not have an answer.
Nor did she really have a complaint.
A new piece of paper was in it’s spot just as quickly as the previous one had been removed, but writing was the last thing on her mind.
It was 1:00 in the morning before Wednesday fell asleep, and an hour later when Enid quietly snuck in.
On her bed, contrasting literally everything on her colorful sheets, was a black and white page folded neatly on her pillow.
Enid.
Ask why I am writing this or speak of this ever and I will make sure no one knows where I’ve hidden your body. I expect you to inform me on how your conversation with Yoko went. I need to know if I need to threaten anybody else.
It has come to my attention that I quite enjoyed our time together today. The Poe Cup was not at all the boring and dreary race I had expected ( minus the costumes, which I will also be burying with your body ). I wanted to thank you for accepting my presence on your team.
If you ever need
Thank you,
Wednesday Addams.
