Work Text:
Everyone in Yokohama was asleep.
...Except for Dazai Osamu. Yes, it was no surprise that Dazai Osamu lay awake another night, another night mindlessly staring at the dark ceiling above him whilst still hearing the rain patter against the window, less merciful than other nights. But yet, Dazai stays awake during all of this. It’s been like this for a while now. Multiple nights without a blink of sleep. Dazai had always had a destroyed sleep schedule for as long as he can remember. But this week, he could not sleep whatsoever. And of course, it didn’t go unnoticed by his co-workers, even Chuuya noticed Dazai’s lack of rest.
Ah yes, Chuuya. They don’t know how but, they started having coffee together. Once Dazai saw the chibi in his favourite place for coffee, without a word he sat next to Chuuya. Then, it just repeated. So, they both having been seeing each other more than usual, Dazai would annoy the chibi, Chuuya would leave before he was late, and so on.
The thought of the red-head made him smile.
----
He walked into the coffee shop as per usual, the warmth inside was a nice change from the unforgiving weather outside. It was winter after all. He notices Chuuya in the booth he sits in usually, there wasn’t any line this time around. He asked for the drink he usually gets, and swiftly walked over to where the chibi was sitting, he sat across from him. “Hello, Chuu-Chuu!!” He greets with his usual chirpy annoying tone. Chuuya doesn’t say anything for a minute, he stares into Dazai’s eyes, He assumes Chuuya notices the dark eyebags he didn’t bother to cover up. Eventually he says something in return, “Dazai, have you been getting enough rest?” Dazai is a slight bit caught off guard, it was so... out of character for Chuuya to express his concerns. The way he said it with real concern made him confused, finally he responds with “Aww, does chibi care about me?” Chuuya’s previously slightly concerned face changed into a scowl as he says “Go to my apartment at 8, Don’t be late.” Chuuya quickly finished his coffee and got up and left, obviously knowing Dazai was going to be late. Probably on purpose too.
----
Dazai looked at the clock, 7:54. He probably should’ve started to get ready a while ago. But he was Dazai, and Dazai always made sure if there was a chance to annoy Chuuya, he would take it. He quickly grabbed gloves and a hat, because even with the bandages, it was still freezing.
Dazai started making his was over to his car, it was only about 15 minutes of a drive, and even without sleep he could drive perfectly fine.
He showed up to Chuuya’s apartment, knocked at the door in a pattern, and said “Chuu-Chuu, open the door!”
--------
Chuuya opened the door to the aggravating man. “Your late.” “Fashionably late chibi.” Chuuya did a quick eye roll and got a glass of wine, he was probably going to need it if he was about to start getting answers out of the stubborn, sleep deprived man that was currently sitting on his couch.
“So, why did chibi want me to come here?” Dazai questioned as he raised his eyebrow. Chuuya made himself comfortable on the opposite couch before answering, “Because, like earlier I wanted to know why you weren’t sleeping.” It was a very direct question, it didn’t catch Dazai off guard unfortunately. “Chibi needs to learn to mind his own business!” He responded in that annoying whiny tone. But Chuuya wasn’t in the mood to argue, he wanted to know exactly why he wasn’t sleeping. He would never admit this out loud but, he was worried about him and he really did want him to get proper rest. He would make sure of it.
Without a word, Chuuya moved over to the couch where Dazai was sitting. “So, is that it? You’re not going to tell me?” He didn’t respond. He turned his head the opposite way, and crossed his arms. As if he was a child sulking. Fine, if he didn’t want to cooperate. Chuuya thought of a way. He abandoned his glass of wine on the coffee table, and proceeded to make Dazai turn his head around, “I think I figured out a way for you to sleep” He held out his hand, “Care to take a look?” Chuuya then dragged Dazai to his bedroom for a hopeless attempt at Dazai finally getting some sort of rest.
Okay, He hadn’t anticipated how weird this would be. It was just like when they were 15 again. It definitely wasn’t new that Dazai wasn’t sleeping again but, usually Chuuya was there to help. It was just like that except they were a lot older and Chuuya had a proper bed.
The two males stayed in Chuuya’s bed, Dazai’s breathing becoming slower. Chuuya had snaked his arms around Dazai’s skinny waist, it was only Chuuya that could do this. It was only Chuuya that could make Dazai fall asleep so easily. They were both under the comfort and safety of Chuuya’s comforter.
Chuuya heard Dazai’s breathing go steady and slow, he could easily be faking it though. For now, it was just the two of them. Some peace and safety in their bloody world.
Soon enough, Chuuya fell asleep too.
----------
Chuuya was cooking breakfast when he heard Dazai stumble out of bed at 11:30 AM, “Morning, Mackerel.” Dazai was unfamiliar with the intimacy of waking up with someone, and them cooking breakfast for you. He replied in his usual tone. “Good morning chibi! I didn’t know you could cook.” He added the last part with a smirk on his face. Chuuya didn’t reply but Dazai could see Chuuya’s face adjust into a familiar scowl.
He sat down on a stool on his kitchen island, it was directly across from where Dazai was sitting. He handed him his plate of eggs and bacon. “Wow! Thank you chibi!” It was said in the annoying tone but Chuuya could sense the real gratitude laying behind the words.
It might’ve been the strangeness of it all.
But to hell with it.
Chuuya abandoned his stool and plate of food, he swiftly moved around the kitchen island and,
kissed Dazai Osamu.
And he kissed back.
