Chapter Text
Mackenzie wasn’t a very popular dog at his school. He only had a few friends, but that was okay with him, he was content with his small group. One of his friends however posed a major problem for him as he had a massive crush on her. His long time friend Bluey was the cutest blue heeler dog he had ever seen. She changed from your innocent child that looked pretty homogenous, that was until she dyed her fur purple and generally changed her demeanor entirely. He always loved his friend, but not in a romantic way until she changed the way he saw her.
‘Ugh, why am I like this?’ Mackenzie shook his head, trying to clear his mind in the middle of his history test. Trying to focus the year Australia was founded was pretty tough when you’re going through puberty and your whole world view changes to view everything in a sexual nature. Though he didn’t look the part, he already discovered the world of masturbation, which then led him to start having “feelings for his classmates”.
It felt like his classmates were all tempting him into committing some inappropriate actions with them. It was such a confusing feeling to see your best friend in ways you never thought before.
Well maybe his feelings for Bluey were mutual anyway, he'd been catching some mixed signals from his friend who’d make sexual jokes touch his thigh and even hug his body. At least that’s what his mind would tell him in these scenarios, getting aroused by Bluey in the weirdest and smallest triggers.
‘Ugh stop!’ Mackenzie frustratingly pushed down his bulge growing in his fur. ‘Not now!’ He didn't want to be the laughing stock of the class with his “parts” acting up in the middle of a history test. ‘I just have to get through this then the day is over’ he sighed to himself.
He glanced at the clock, seemingly taunting him going slower and slower the longer he stared at it.
He looked around the beige brick walls, occasionally writing down new answers on his test. It didn’t help that the pencil had been sharpened so many times that it was barely 6cm long. He finally finished the last answer on the test, quickly handing it in to his teacher. Not caring to double check his answers before handing the test in.
He sat back down in his seat, picking at his dead ends hanging from his thick coat. He was going to have to ask his mum for a trim again if he wanted to look good enough for his friends. Hopefully his mum wouldn’t continue to say how “handsome” her “baby” had become. Those words made Mackenzie cringe every time she said it like he was still a little kid.
He did feel insecure whenever his appearance was brought up as all his friends looked like models while he felt like the most boring friend in the group with no real interests. Bluey had her art and sketching, Rusty had football, Jack had everything space and science, Chloe was the school photographer and Indy could probably make someone an entire wardrobe in a night. He tried to think what his “thing” was in the group. ‘Perving on Bluey?’ he thought, thinking that's all he could even do. He was so in his own head until his favourite part of the day finally rolled around.
The bell finally rang.
Mackenzie quickly got up from his seat, he did not want to be a moment longer in this building, especially any more than he needed to. He picked up his checkered pattern backpack and swung it around his back. At least he could finally see his friends once he finished his class.
His friends all planned to meet up after school at the mall near his house and “do some shopping” as Chloe said. ‘I don’t get an allowance like you do Chloe!’ Mackenzie mumbled to himself. ‘I don’t know why I was thinking otherwise, this is clearly us just going to the shops to look at the news cameras.’
Mackenzie dreaded getting dragged into his friends interests when all he wanted to do was go home and play some games on his switch. Maybe with Bluey if he was being honest with himself. ‘Ugh! Stop it!’ Mackenzie said walking with his legs together trying to hide what he would want to do with Bluey if they were alone.
“Thump!” Mackenzie felt something grab onto his back, making him jump back into the thing that touched him. “Kenzie!” a familiar voice joyfully latched onto his shoulders. Mackenzie turned his head to find Bluey herself. “What are we doing tonight? Are we gonna play some games at your house tonight?” Bluey rapidly threw questions at Mackenzie. “What? I thought we were going to the shops with Chloe, Indy and Jack?” Mackenzie scratched his head.
“Welllll, I told them that we would be going to your house afterwards to see your new switch.” Bluey leaned into Mackenzie’s space. “L-like my room?” he stuttered. “Yeah? Isn’t that where your switch is?” Bluey tilted her head confused.
This was a total shock to Mackenzie, he didn’t know his friends were coming to his house. It would be perfectly fine if his room didn’t look like a bomb exploded in their with dirty laundry and smells filling the room.
Mackenzie stood flustered and Bluey noticed lightly jabbing him in his shoulder teasingly. “Oh c’mon Mackenzie, it’s not like we all haven’t seen what underwear you wear!” “Bluey!” Mackenzie’s cheeks would be glowing bright red if it weren't for his thick fur covering his face. “What? You Rusty and Jack share a P.E. class. I’m sure you’ve all seen each other changing.” Mackenzie was shocked how Bluey was so comfortable talking about people like this.
“Whatever, you're making this conversation weird, let’s go!” Bluey tugged on Mackenzie’s paws pulling him forward. He followed behind Bluey still had a tight grip on his paw. Mackenzie was flustered again, feeling the details and pores in her paw pads and the smooth, neatly trimmed fur in between her beans.
Mackenzie followed behind while she talked a storm on what they will do when they meet up with their friends. “Maybe we could get some drinks, or ooh! We could get some milkshakes!” she rambled on. Mackenzie had no idea what she was talking about, but that didn’t stop him from blushing.
Bluey and Mackenzie finally arrived at the shops, looking for a place to sit where all of their friends could fit. “There! That should be enough seats.” Bluey said, still dragging Mackenzie. The table was a black metal grated table with complimentary chairs with the same colour scheme and texture. The pair quickly sat down and started talking.
“So when are the others coming?” Mackenzie asked. “Well Chloe and Indy are coming together and they said they should be here in ten minutes.” Bluey explains. “Rusty and Jack should be coming sometime after them, but I don’t know, I haven’t gotten a reply back.”
“Do you have money on you, Bluey?” Mackenzie looked at Bluey. “Yeah, I got some dollabucks from my dad.” she looked in her bag. “Well he only gave me a ten,” Bluey sounded annoyed by this. “What did you bring,”Bluey looked back at Mackenzie.
Mackenzie didn’t say anything, however his silence must have been a good enough answer for Bluey as she said “You know what, I’ll get go get us both a smoothie for the stand over there, sound good?” Mackenzie nodded his head.
Mackenzie watched as the Blue Heeler pushed her chair back, making a loud screeching noise then pushing it back in. She turned towards the stand and swayed over to order the drinks. Mackenzie was a bit embarrassed as he caught himself looking at Blueys behind as she walked. He had to admit that she was cute and he was very happy that she cared as much as she does.
Bluey came back with the two drinks in hand and put them onto the metal table. “What kind did you get?” Mackenzie inspected the drinks. “Oh yeah, I got you a mango smoothie and I got a strawberry banana! I hope you like it, you didn’t tell me what you wanted so I just picked one.” Mackenzie giggled “Yeah sorry, it’s my favourite anyway.”
They quietly sat, sipping from their straws trying to avoid getting a brain freeze.
Bluey shot up, suddenly putting her drink down. “Chloe! Over here!” She said flawling her arms in the air. Bluey sat back down once the others noticed them at the table.
Chloe and Indy both arrived pulling out the noisy chairs, grabbing a seat. “Hey guys!” Chloe joyfully exclaimed, excited to get this night started. “How are y’all doing?” she quickly bounced to the new subject.
“Ugh, my teacher was scolding us about the dress code today, like c’mon, our fur covers everything anyway! Who cares about how long my shorts are!” Bluey said annoyed. “Oh is that Ms. Malamute?” Indy asked. “Yeah, she's so annoying.”
Mackenzie looked at his phone, checking the time as he waited for Jack and Rusty. What was taking them so long? “How long are we waiting for Rusty and Jack?” Mackenzie finally blurted out. “Oh, I have no idea, they should be here by now, but you know Jack,” Chloe replied.
It was a little annoying that the two boys took so long. Even though Jack had ADHD and his friends excused him for being late a few times, it still got annoying to his friends occasionally. Usually Rusty would help him out with his ADHD, but he also sometimes used it to his advantage by having excuses for being late.
“Ugh, let’s just get going to Mackenzie’s already,” Bluey said. “Jack and Rusty are going to have to find us eventually if they ever show up.” Chloe sighed “I guess so,”
The four of them got up from the metal chairs and took the trash they accumulated into the trash. They started walking towards the exit until they ran right into Jack and Rusty.
“Where have you two been?” Bluey questioned. Jack and Rusty looked at each other guilty. “Y’know…uhh,” Jack stuttered. Rusty sighed “We forgot and just played games on our phones.” Rusty said while rubbing the back of his head like he had been caught. Bluey rolled her eyes looking back at the others who also looked a bit annoyed.
“Okay, let’s go. I don’t want the night to end up sour because of this.” Bluey finally said. The six of them continued down the street walking towards Mackenzie’s old style house next to the park with the magpies. At this time of year the magpies weren't as bad so it wasn’t a worry now.
Mackenzie opened a zipper from his checkered backpack taking his house keys out and unlocking the door for him and all his friends. Everyone filed into the house, putting their backpacks at the front entrance. “You guys can sit on the couch if you want to.” Mackenzie told everyone.
Mackenzie froze, he completely forgot about his room. Throwing his backpack on the ground and running into his bedroom. He quickly shoved any unsightly things into his closet making sure nothing embarrassing was out. Especially his underwear, which he felt was considered too childish for his age.
“What are you doing?” Bluey called Mackenzie. Mackenzie jumped. “AHH, don’t do that Bluey!” Mackenzie said in between his heavy breaths. Bluey laughed, “I said nobody would care to see any of your stuff, it's fine.” Bluey said giggling.
Mackenzie was embarrassed but he plopped down onto his bed, Bluey shortly joined him. “Everything will be fine Kenzie, trust me,” Bluey said in a sincere tone. Mackenzie looked at Bluey, almost having tears in his eyes.
What would happen next would change everything for Bluey and Mackenzie’s relationship. Mackenzie leaned onto Bluey with Bluey doing the same. “I love you so much,” Bluey broke the silence. Mackenzie didn’t know how to answer, all he could do was turn towards his best friend and push his lips into hers.
Mackenzie and Bluey shared their first kiss together.
