Work Text:

You could say that for Gus, it's a dream come true to be in the human realm, although all of them didn't have a choice, they were stuck there, without an option to return to the demon realm. They all had to blend in, so no one will suspect them for not being humans.

Hunter and Gus probably loved the human realm more than anyone else. Hunter enjoyed having a normal life for once- it was a place where his lack of magic didn't matter to anyone. He could've start fresh here, without people knowing about Belos.

The human realm for both of them made them happy, they also got obsessed with a book they found at Luz's house. They had a bond here, but they couldn't erase the absence of the boiling isles- their home.

It was a subject no one of them mentioned, but the time passed and they couldn't avoid it any longer, so Hunter wasn't surprised that one night, when they sat in their room at Luz’s house, Gus mumbled “I miss my dad…”. When he realised he said it out loud, he immediately apologised to Hunter, knowing it could upset him. “I'm sorry,” Gus told him, he realised it was a tactless thing to say to Hunter.

“It's okay, you don't have to apologise for that. It's not surprising you miss your family, and it's not your fault I have no one waiting for me in the boiling isles.”

Gus looked at him. “It's not true, Hunter. I'm sure there is, and there are plenty of things to miss in the boiling isles.”

“No, I don't think so,” Hunter responded, “I've been my whole life in the emperor's coven, I've made so many mistakes in my life… I'm sure everyone there hates me right now. I helped Belos so much.” There was quiet in the room for a couple of seconds, until Hunter continued. “I prefer this place, it fits me better. I mean, it's not like I'm going to stay here… okay yes, I thought about this a few times, but the boiling isles is my home, and I'm not going to abandon it, but there's nothing waiting for me there.”

There was silence for a second, until Gus responded. “You have us.”

“What?” Hunter asked him.

“From now on, we're your family. And there's nothing you can do to change it,” Gus smiled at him, and Hunter smiled at him back, appreciating this very much.

“And you can miss a lot of things in the boiling isles,” Gus told him, “like the food!”

“Yeah.. I guess I miss it. The food here isn't the same.” Hunter imagined himself back in the boiling isles, and enjoying the different kinds of food from the boiling isles, like fried orbs and fairy pies.

“Yeah. And there's also sports games! Like flying derby!” Gus looked at him, he was happy to get Hunter to remember the stuff he likes from the boiling isles.

“Yes!” Hunter got excited, “I played it about three times, but I like this game a lot. I wish we could come back and play this game! I mean, after we fix the problems there from the Day of Unity…”

“Hey, everything will be okay.” Gus told him, “sure now it's not, but we do try to come back. And I'll be happy to play with you flying derby once we get back!”

“Thanks.” Hunter smiled at Gus. They are stuck in the human realm, but at least they're safe from Belos for now.
