Work Text:

Sirius is excited. They feel so excited they could just die. That’d be a lot less exciting, though, so they are not planning on that.

She feels like she’s bursting at the seams, like she could run an entire marathon right now out of pure excitement. They feel like a child on christmas morning, which is extremely ironic if she were to think about what’s actually happening. She feels like she could just turn into a superhero and fly around the earth 20 times and still have so much energy. They could defeat every villain that ever existed in comic books and still have energy.

They’re glad they have energy, she’s been so nervous about this for weeks but now that it’s so so soon? And now that they have plans with Remus? They’re pumped and ready to go. She’s so happy.

Sirius was nervous about this because it’s her first Hanukkah since her and Regulus converted to Judaism. She really didn’t want to fuck anything up or say anything wrong. Both them and Regulus had been researching everything about Judaism that they could since they tried to get their sibling relationship back on track, but shes still so scared she’ll fuck it up somehow.

And to make matters worse, Regulus said he’d rather not celebrate Hanukkah with Sirius and Remus, that he’d rather celebrate with his own boyfriend. How dare Regulus leave his older sibling alone in a crisis such as this? The audacity he has, astonishing honestly.

Though as much as Sirius would like to act as if she’s upset, as much as they’d like to grab Regulus by the shoulder and force him to act brotherly, she doesn’t care that much. They’re kind of excited to have alone time, on Hanukkah, with Remus.

They’d celebrated Hanukkah with Remus since Hogwarts, all four of the marauders huddled around a small Menorah that Remus could barely fit in his trunk. Everyone was supportive. They’d support James celebrating Diwali, support Remus celebrating Hanukkah, support Mary, Dorcas, Evan, and Pandora with Kwanzaa. Sirius has always been grateful for their supportive friend group. They wouldn’t have found themself in Judaism if it weren’t for them.

However, Sirius might explode from their energy level as well as not knowing what to wear level if James doesn’t get off of his ass and come help, respectfully.

They haven’t seen their boyfriend in just over a week. A very long and hard week at that. A very slow and tiring one. She misses Remus, but she’s so happy.

“James!” She raises her voice again, just higher than last time she yelled James’ name. They need help. They need to dress well to impress Remus and to look good for their group chat. They haven’t posted one of her outfits in the group chat in a while, everyone must be starving.

“I’m coming, I promise!” Sirius hears before she hears a thud. It sounds like James. A James sounding thud and then ridiculous amounts of laughter.

“Did you fall?“ She shouts.

“.. No..” James shouts back

“Did a James shaped plant fall over?”

“A James shaped thing definitely fell over.” He replies, his voice sounding a bit louder by the word, as if he’s walking to her room very slowly.

Sirius moves from in front of her mirror to her doorway, James standing a few feet away, down the hallway. He definitely fell, he’s holding onto his hip like an old man would and he doesn’t have his glasses on.

They can’t resist laughing.

“Okay, yeah, I get it. Laugh it up.” James says, a wild smile on his face from where he stands.

“Oh I will.” They reply, still laughing.

James stands there for a minute before laughing as well. Sirius shuffles over to grab onto his shoulders before falling down with just how hard they’re laughing.

“Okay, okay. We’ve got to sort this out, Prongs. I can’t pick which skirt.” Sirius eventually says after the laughter has died down some. “I don’t know if the black with stripes or the plain blue one is better, I can’t decide.” They say, pushing off of James to stand up better. James goes plummeting down to the floor with the gentle push, smiling some more. Sirius offers him her hand and pulls him up.

“Go put one on, let me go get my glasses really quick.” He says before shuffling off in search of said glasses.

Sirius turns around and walks back into their room, taking a breath before looking back at both of the skirts. The blue one looks good with the shirt, but also the black with stripes is something she’d wear more. They both look good and they like both options.

She quickly shimmies the blue one up her legs and does a small little twirl, they can’t help the smile that lights up their face.

The blue one is also more.. Hanukkah. She’d wear red and green to a Christmas party so shouldn’t she wear blue to a Hanukkah party?

James comes into her room while fixing his glasses and failing to straighten them. Sirius takes a step so she’s in front of him and then fixes them so they’re straight.

James whispers a little thank you before looking at the skirt options. Sirius holds up the other skirt to her waist and takes it away a few times, trying to show James what they both look like when on. James pauses for a minute.

“I see what you mean..” Sirius swears they can hear the smile in James’ voice. She’s so happy.

“Yeah! I mean, shouldn’t I wear blue? Its Hanukkah.”

“Yeah! I think they both look look cute but its more.. Hanukkah-ie. You know?”

Sirius nods, she knows. James looks at his watch and then his eyes widen. Uh oh.

“Uhm.. Sirius…” he says quietly.

“Yes..?”

“You need to go, like, super soon. Like super duper soon. It’ll be sundown in like 30 minutes.” he says before scratching the back of his head.

“Oh.” Sirius says before immediately looking around their room for the stuff they need to bring. Clothing in the bag, check. Phone, check. Wallet, check. Remus told them to not bring any food, so she doesn’t have to stress about that. She glances around her room, quickly taking a photo of herself in the mirror, before gently pushing James out by the chest and following. They shut the door behind herself and look at him, exhaling.

“I miss him so much.”

“I’m sure he misses you more.” James smiles, stuffing both of his hands in his sweatpants’ pockets.

Sirius rolls her eyes as she stuffs everything in the bag with the clothes. She quickly sends her photo to the group chat and quickly their phone buzzes with notifications. “Sure, because that's possible.”

“Yeah yeah! Just go, I feel like a father sending his daughter away. You’re going to be late!”

“Okay! Going! Going going.” Sirius laughs before walking to their front door. They turn around slightly to wink at James as he waves and fake cries. He fake cries as if he’s sending his child off to the military or certain death or something along those lines. Sirius loves him.

As they walk to their bike they can’t help but smile. Lily is with her family and Marlene for Hanukkah, Barty and Regulus are together, she’s going to Remus’ and everyone is happy. They love it when everyone is happy.

They find her bike quickly and don’t care about the helmet this time. They want to feel the breeze in her hair.

The drive to Remus’ is fairly fine. No one is annoying on the road and it just feels normal, it feels happy. Sirius is so happy. The Christmas lights are beautiful as always and she’s so happy.

Remus is waiting outside for her when Sirius pulls up. He’s wearing one of his usual sweaters and his brown yarmulke, he’s wearing his normal everyday jeans, his star of David necklace and Sirius thinks he’s angelic.

“You.” they say sweetly, flipping one leg off of the side of the bike to rest on it, Remus walking down and standing in front of her. Remus looks so happy, Sirius is so happy.

“You.” Remus sighs, grabbing her by the cheeks and softly kissing their forehead. “I missed you.”

She’s practically vibrating. “Can we go in? I’m so excited I could die.”

“Have fun with that.” Remus replies, grabbing her hand and walking her into his house.

The whole thing is decorated so beautifully. Remus has a few menorah decorations all over. There’s blue ribbons hanging from one side of the roof to the other. There are fake vines in places and pictures of everyone. The pillows on Remus’ couch are blue and white. There's a few dreidels here and there and gelt on almost every surface and Sirius is in love. They have to pause to take it all in. She’s home.

“You like it?” Remus asks, looking over at her from where he stands by what looks like freshly made Latkes.

“Yes!” She says excitedly, walking over to him and latching onto his arm. They, again, feel like they could just explode. Explode all over Remus. That wouldn’t actually be such a bad way to go.

“We need to light the candles before we eat because of the time, pick which one you want and you can keep it. They’re all from my family but I’ve always used my dad’s old one.” Remus gestures to a table where about seven menorahs stand.

Sirius looks at them and immediately feels drawn to them all. She quickly takes off her shoes and puts them by the door and then walks back to the table. There's so many and they get to keep one of them. Forever, literally. These are heirlooms from Remus’ family and he’s letting them have one. Oh, she’s so in love.

They stand there for a second, taking them all in. There is so much fine detail to all of them, they’re all old and beautiful and Sirius doesn’t know which one they want. She’d be grateful to have any of them.

They take a second but eventually decide on a small one in the back. It’s gold and the little arms to hold the candles aren’t very far apart. The base is circular. It looks old and used and it’s her’s. They pick it up with all the care in the world and turn around, showing her choice to Remus.

He nods and brings over the candles, putting one in the middle for the shamash and one on the side as it’s the first night. Remus sets his own menorah beside her’s.

The candles are white and blue, the tip being white with a blue gradient down to the bottom. Sirius is ready, they know the prayers and they know which ones to sing. She knows when and how to light the candles. They feel as if they’ve waited their entire fucking life for this. Every moment has led up to this.

Remus leads the prayers because Sirius is a bit nervous, but they sing all of them together. She lights their candles and steps back to look at them.

This is where she was meant to be, this is home. They’ve always been meant to do this.

Remus looks over at them and smiles, Sirius swears the flames burn a little brighter.

Notes:

i might write what barty and regulus were doing on regulus’ first night of hanukkah too? and mayhaps lily and marlene.
