Existential Reflection

Summary:

Based on a dream I had.

"Have you ever found a hole in the universe and fought the overwhelming urge to look away?

Did you stare into that small, empty speck until the light filtered past the vast emptiness and met with your retina? So then as they say; you stared into the abyss and it stared back at you. The proof being that your eyes are now full of stars."

Chapter 1: Preface

Chapter Text

Have you ever found a hole in the universe and fought the overwhelming urge to look away?

Did you stare into that small, empty speck until the light filtered past the vast emptiness and met with your retina? So then as they say; you stared into the abyss and it stared back at you. The proof being that your eyes are now full of stars.

While taking in the sheer vastness of the beauty before you, how are you not overtaken? How do you hold on to what makes you, you? This hole in the fabric of reality is just a glimpse of a gap. Something that shouldn’t exist but existence couldn’t be if not for inexistence.

It’s like time, something that is ever marching but unique in its form and essence for everything that is subjected to it. It can’t be explained; we can try to ignore it but the matter is, it is a part of life. It has always been there and always will be whether or not you’re looking at it.

But then if it is a part of life and has always been there, is it not a part of you? You may feel as though you’re being sucked in, you may feel you’re losing your sense of self but when the shock of it all fades you’ll realize it isn’t taking you, nor you it. But you’ve been a part of the universe and it in you far longer than you’ve been alive. You are very much tethered to reality.

If you think of all the things it took to get you right where you are; on this planet, at this time, this very moment. The exact thing you fear sweeping you away is what put you here.

It would not overcome you so much as it would self-destruct. There are constants in chaos. Right now, there are two parts of a whole looking at and acknowledging one another and respecting their mutual existence. This is but a reflection.

You looked into a mirror, and so you know yourself more than you ever have before.

Notes:

Thanks for reading if you made it this far. I have a lot of weird dreams, I plan on detailing the dream this poem is based on in the next chapter. I figured since I wrote it, it would be nice to post it instead of just letting it collect dust in my journal.
