Chapter Text
A breeze flowed through Hyrule Field. A beautiful breeze that made Link feel more alive than he had in a while. It’s what he lives for now.
He wasn’t sure what he lived for 100 years ago but…well, it can’t beat this.
He remembered Zelda and bits and pieces of the Champions but not enough to form a proper picture.
Though thankfully, he was pretty damn good at living in the present.
“Keep up slowpoke!”
“You’d think that Voe would be a bit faster than you are now-“
“Especially with that divine beast of yours.”
“Yeah Link, you should be going far faster than us!”
But Link had the new Champions. And he knew them all too well.
“Oh, I see how it is. Perhaps I should speed it up a bit!”
He revved up his Master Cycle 0 and full speeded it across Hyrule Field, a grin on his face. The wind blew in his hair, jiggled the Master Sword and Bow on his back, and he felt…free. Sidon, Riju, Teba, and Yunobo were desperate to catch up, laughing all the while. Sidon was swimming across the lake, Riju on horseback, Teba in the sky, and Yunobo sliding down hill in his ball form.
Teba chuckled. “Don’t make me play dirty Hero!”
Link looked up with a grin. “What does that even mean?”
“It means-THIS!”
At that moment everyone simultaneously tried to run Link off the road. “Whoa, haha, hey! Take it easy!”
Sidon kept trying to splash Link with water. “Not a chance! You’re simply too powerful to continue to race!”
“For once, Sidon and I agree!” Riju cackled. “We agreed we wouldn’t let you win a race before we started!”
Yunobo hit his wheel straight on with laughter. “Give up Link! You’ve lost!”
Link was grinning wide, laughing all the while. “Never! I’m the Hero of Courage and I’m never giving up-WHOA!”
His bike tumbled out of control and spun, sending him face first into the dirt while his bike vanished into nothing.
Immediately, the four champions stopped the race and stopped in their tracks, immediately going to his side. “Link! Are you okay?”
But Link just laughed. “Ouch. My soul. My feeeeeelings. How dare you try to take my throne as race king! I’m unstoppable! In fact, you guys trying to take my throne just proves that I’m a legend!”
Prince Sidon and Yunobo chuckled, while Teba put his head in his hands, and Riju struggled not to laugh. Sidon lifted up Link with a grin. “Well, Link, I’d say you performed pretty well for your eighth race. And as much as it frustrates my colleagues to admit, they are certainly impressed.”
Riju scoffed. “Speak for yourself.”
Yunobo sighed. “Still, it was fun though! All of us champions spending time together like that. We don’t get to do it often!”
“We literally just hung out two days ago,” Teba deadpanned.
“Two days is a long time!”
Link groaned with a slight chuckle. “Well, the only reason we’re waiting this long is because Zelda is taking her sweet time finding out details of what the Yiga are planning.”
Prince Sidon raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t that kind of talk sacrilege of the highest order?”
“Yeah well…my status has a knight has been questionable for the past year or so.”
“Well, I’m sorry, but were you not reinstated just a year ago by the Queen herself?” Riju spoke up. “We were all there with you! You earned the right to be a knight, to be the most incredible knight in all of Hyrule!”
Link grimaced and Teba immediately noticed. “But it doesn’t feel right, does it Link?”
Yunobo looked at him with a sad look. “What’s wrong?”
Before Link could say anything, they heard a giant siren sound in the distance. Everyone was on guard, except for Link who just took a deep breath.
“Everyone get on your knees. The Queen is here.”
The five knelt to the ground as a giant hulking Guardian came burrowing through the field and appeared in front of them. It was modified slightly, slightly damaged on the legs, but it was a Guardian just the same. The head of it opened up revealing a pilot’s seat, with Zelda piloting, and both Purah and Robbie standing by.
Purah immediately grinned. “Linky! It is great to see you again!”
She immediately jumped out of the cockpit and ran into Link’s arms with a big hug. “I see you are making good use of my Master Cycle! “
“Hah, it’s good to see you too Purah.” Link looked up at Robbie with a small grin. “And you Robbie. I see this new Guardian of yours has been made well.”
Robbie grinned. “Made perfectly to our specifications! It is also a pleasure to see the Champions again! How are your Divine Beasts running?”
Riju groaned. “Straight to business huh?”
Sidon nodded. “Yup.”
Zelda got out of her seat, royal gown and all. “We have all worked hard on the new Piloted Guardians. Especially Link, who had a very up close look at the Guardians Calamity took over.”
Link chuckled. “It’s good to see you too Zelda.”
Zelda looked shocked for a moment. “You…You really are talking more. Why?”
“What’s wrong?” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Don’t like my voice?”
“No…No it’s nice. You seem…happy.”
There was a bit of an awkward silence until Teba cleared his throat. “Okay, well, that sure was something. Your Majesty, what did you find out about the Yiga?”
Zelda immediately perked up. “Well, it appears they are carrying a massive shipment of more ancient Sheikah tech.”
She went to grab her sheikah slate while Link turned serious. “How are they carrying in the shipment?”
“That’s the weird part.” Zelda handed Link the slate, a picture on it.
It was a giant boat but it looked more ancient, and much much larger. It was capable of carrying so many supplies and immediately Yunobo was baffled. “What is that?!”
Purah stepped in. “That’s old Sheikah tech. Very old. Around the same time as the Guardians and Divine Beasts were created. Meant to scour the seas and oceans and travel the world, and carry a bunch of supplies along the way. The Sheikah used it to explore the world until…well, the Calamity.”
Link sighed. “Right, well if this thing is out on the ocean then we need to get the drop on them quickly. Sidon can take Riju, take the ocean. Can you carry Yunobo?”
Sidon grinned. “I can, and I will.”
Both Riju and Teba rolled their eyes while Yunobo perked up.
Teba took a deep breath. “So does that mean I got you Link?”
“You can drop me in?”
“With pleasure.”
“Good, well, that works.”
Link turned to Zelda with a serious expression. “What exactly are the Yiga bringing in?”
She turned hesitant. “I’m unsure. Perhaps something to bring back the Calamity?”
Link didn’t buy it. Of course he didn’t. But he just sighed and nodded. “Okay, well, we can’t let that happen.” He turned to the Champions. “You guys ready?”
They all nodded and Link grinned. “Good. Arm up. We leave in half an hour.”
———————————————————
“What’s the plan Link?”
Link held out his own sheikah slate and zoomed in on the giant boat. “You drop me in and I clear the deck. You guys come in and we split up. Sidon and Riju look for the package, Yunobo deals with any trouble, and you help with recon. Sound good?”
Teba and Link were high above the ocean, darkness filling the skies above them. It would’ve been a beautiful view if the circumstances weren’t so dire. Teba nodded. “Sounds good.”
“Good.” Link smirked. “Commit that to memory in case the plan goes wrong.”
Teba grinned. “Like the last time we hit a Yiga outpost? When you lost your Sheikah outfit? Is that why you’re wearing those pajamas?”
Link was wearing his currently glow in the dark radiant suit. It wasn’t exactly his first choice but it got the job done. He took a giant swig of the stealth elixir he kept stashed and grinned. “Listen, it works. Well Teba, I’ll see you on the other side!”
He jumped off of his back, not caring or listening to Teba yelling at him to deploy his glider.
Link liked it to be down to the wire.
He fell straight to the surface, nothing slowing him down, until he finally deployed his glider and slowly floated over to a safe and quiet spot on the boat.
Link pulled out his small knife, gifted to him by Riju, and his bow and arrow. He took a deep breath.
It was up to him now.
He drew his bow and started sneaking around the boat, hiding behind cover. By his count, there were about thirteen people on the main deck. First one, a Yiga standing on the edge, over looking the ocean. That…was certainly a tactical oversight.
Link shot him right in the head, and he fell over into the water. No one was watching him as he fell.
Good.
Maybe he could speed things up a bit.
He took out his shield and his sword and began to run across the deck of the boat, using his full stamina to run and not caring about if anyone spotted him. They wouldn’t be fast enough to spot him.
Second guard and third guard, playing some sort of game. Link sped in and beheaded one, and threw his knife at the other’s face, blood splashing out before they both collapsed to the ground. He grabbed the knife and kept running. Three down, ten to go.
His footsteps echoed slightly across the metal machinery below him. He could vaguely hear the sounds of Riju, Sidon, and Yunobo circling the boat and scouting out what to do next. But right now Link’s focused on the running.
There were three guards, all stood around each other, watching the stars gather in the sky. Link could vaguely hear them talking, but that didn’t matter at all. Link’s been asleep for 100 years.
Time to put on a little bit of a show.
He rolled into the hallway, and immediately raised his sword and slashed right at the Yiga’s arm and before he could react, he threw him over the edge of the boat. The two other Yiga immediately had their blades out, but Link quickly took out his bow and arrow and fired it right at the hand of one warrior, and the head of the warrior who went straight for the horn. Link ran straight to the injured soldier and tackled him to the ground, and immediately knocked him unconscious.
Suddenly, two other guards came running at him and tackled him straight to the ground, and was about to wail on him, until Link tried something he had only practiced once before. He grabbed the arrow from the unconscious Yiga’s hand, grabbed his bow and arrow, and used his leg to pull it up, and used his left hand to pull back the arrow. It fired and
Hit the Yiga’s leg.
Link groaned out, “It was worth a try,” and quickly threw his knife at his head instead. He jumped up before the body hit the ground, and used the bloodied knife to place it right into the second Yiga’s head before he could react.
Eight down. Five to go.
Link took a deep breath and sighed. The stealth elixir was starting to run out, so he didn’t have much time. So he kept running,
Preferably the last five would all be in one close together spo-oh wow, that was convenient.
Lo and behold, the last five were all gathered around a table on the main deck, playing some sort of gambling game. Link grinned. He took out his bow that was more suited to firing three arrows and aimed it right at the three standing next to each other.
“This should be easy,” Link muttered to himself.
Boom! He let the arrows fly and they hit one, two-
And the third arrow missed and hit the guy’s hand.
Uh oh.
Link ran in to face the last three guys, throwing a knife at one’s leg. He went to pull out his sword, but a Yiga punched him in the face. He staggered back, feeling his teeth vibrate, and grinned. He spit blood on the ground and ran in. The two standing tried to fight him, but he was a natural fighter, sword or not. Bang! He delivered a punch to one’s knee, another to the the jaw. Yiga number two tried to swing his sickle, but Link moved his head just slightly and finally got to take out his Master Sword.
He swung it just slightly, and ripped straight through the Yiga’s arm. He collapsed, and Link took the sword to the bloodied and bruised Yiga before he could get it back up, tearing it straight into his chest. But before he could worry about the third, he had slashed right at his arm.
Link was knocked backwards with a wince. But before the Yiga could go for a killing blow, an arrow hit him straight in the head. He slowly crumpled to the ground as Teba finally landed. Link grinned. “Thanks.”
Teba smirked in response. “Well, you were clearly going to die without me, of course.”
Link kept smirking. “Did you tell the others to continue the plan?”
“I did. And I also figured out whose in charge here.”
“Anyone I know?”
“Kron.”
Link turned around sharply. “Kohga’s son?” Then he sighed. “That was quick. You’d think he would spend more time mourning.”
“He probably spent more time hating you. He was almost a teenager when he died. He probably still believes you killed Kohga.”
“…Dammit. Okay, well, you continue recon and cover me if anyone tries to start something. I’ll find Kron.”
“On it.” Before Link could wander off, Teba grabbed him. “And Link. Be careful.”
He just grinned and nodded. Teba flew off and went back to patrolling while Link drew his bow. At the top of the ship was a small tent, which no doubt contained the Yiga.
So Link grinned and drew his arrow towards it. “Okay Kron. Let’s hope you are a better fighter than your Father.”
———————————
Kron had been planning his uprising for four years. He was going to take over the Yiga Clan and rule it with an iron fist. Finally take the clan to their rightful place alongside the Calamity. Halfway through though, things changed. His father died because of a long dead Hero of Hyrule. Who just came in and completely undid years and years of training and preparing by doing nothing.
So once the Calamity was defeated and Kron finally took over, the plan changed. Now they would rewrite history and destroy Link once and for all. Then bring back the Calamity and destroy Hyrule.
So they started looking for their weapons of mass destruction. Started digging around the outside layers of Hyrule, and in underground cities left destroyed and completely undone. And they found some old Sheikah relics long before their time. This boat and some old fashioned Guardians.
But then they found something else. True weapons. Capable of destroying not just Hyrule but far beyond.
So now him and his people were guarding this ship and its shipment.
Kron would immediately take the fight to Link and ruin him once and for all.
And then-
An arrow with a bomb tip.
“Oh SHIT!”
————————————————-
Kron jumped out of the tent and scrambled out, along with three of his other lackeys. Link put his bow down and looked in shock as he scrambled out with his sword raised.
“…Huh. He sure can run when he wants to.”
Kron saw Link on the main deck and reeled back in shock. Then he threw his mask off and scowled. “LINKKKKKKKKKKKK!”
He jumped onto the main deck with a large leap. Link grinned. “Hey. Kron is it? You look…” He took a long look at Kron and his outfit. He wasn’t as wide as his Father, he looked more fit and athletic. But he wore the same garb. His face though was covered with light scars and everything.
“…vaguely like your Father?”
Kron scowled. “You dare disgrace my father’s memory?! After what you did?!”
“You do know he killed himself right?”
“YOU LIE!”
Kron charged at Link with his sword raised and Link instantly parried without issue. He kept wildly swinging while Link just swiftly dodged each swipe. “I’m serious! He summoned his giant metal ball and it fell over and crushed him. That’s it. I had nothing to do with it!”
Kron growled and then took a deep breath. “You talk too much for a knight. You act so high and mighty because you defeated Ganon. But you are nothing. Just a pathetic old fool in a world that doesn’t need him anymore. Of course you are good with a sword. But can you beat me…”
He dropped his sword and spoke in an ancient Sheikah tongue. “In hand to hand combat.”
Link was shaken slightly by his words. Truth be told, maybe he was a bit arrogant. But…why shouldn’t he be? He had just crossed a demon monster from beyond his time and brought peace to Hyrule.
Why wouldn’t the world need him? Kron was obviously trying to get in his head.
And yet.
But Link grinned. He couldn’t show that here and now. He planed the Master Sword deep within the hull of the ship and took off his own mask. He raised his fists and spoke in the same tongue that Kron had spoken to him. “Let’s dance.”
The two of them dashed at each other as Kron went to throw his first punch. Link dodged and delivered a punch to his chest and then an uppercut, slamming straight into his jaw. Kron staggered backwards and spoke with a grin. “That’s more like it.”
He dashed forward and leaped into the air, directing two kicks straight to his abdomen. He stepped back and tried to throw two stars straight at his head, but Link dodged one and caught the other. Link threw it right back and ran at Kron. He dodged, but Link had already made the journey and started throwing a flurry of punches to his chest. Kron tried to kick back, but Link hit his leg with one hit, almost dislocating it. And before he could throw one last punch, Link delivered a killer uppercut that sent him flying backwards.
He shook his fist with a sigh. “Stay down! Just show me where the shipment is and we can just take you in, no problem at all.”
Kron scowled. “Never.” Then he saw the Master Sword by his side and grinned. “NEVER!”
Link immediately noticed and shouted, “Wait, don’t!”
But it was too late. Kron had grabbed the Master Sword. Immediately, his arm started searing. The flesh on his arm began to burn and turn a dark black color. He screamed out in pain and Link immediately reeled back.
“Let it go! That sword isn’t yours, it will kill you! It’s not worth it!”
“I can’t!” He started to tear up and at that moment, he didn’t look like the fearless leader of the Yiga. He looked like he was just a kid. “It won’t let me let it go! I’m sorry I-I was a fool! I don’t want to die!”
Link was about to step forward…until he heard something. Something dark and insidious.
Whispering. He heard whispering.
He heard a multitude of names whispered.
“link....
kron…
skull…
zelda….”
The whispering increased in volume and it seemed that Kron heard it more than even Link did. He strained himself to move as the Master Sword made a soft droning sound. “No! Please, leave me alone!”
Link could hear the feedback of the whispering, faintly hearing the words, “-want to live right?”
“Yes! But I can’t-!”
“Then Do what is necessary. Or are you a coward? Like your father?”
“No! No I’m not a coward!”
Link tried to run forward and grab the sword, but then Kron pulled out something from his pocket that stopped him dead.
It was a mask.
A purple and red mask with an ancient pattern and spikes along the edge of it. Most of it looked worn and scratched up. Like it hadn’t been touched for thousands of years. But the eyes…those golden dark eyes looked untouched.
Link could almost feel it staring into his soul.
Kron’s right arm was almost destroyed and his left hand was shaking. He looked up at Link desperately. “Link…listen to me, if the Yiga Clan knows what happen here, they will follow you. I have no control anymore and-agh!” He threw up blood. “I’m sorry. None of this was worth it. A storm is coming and it is all my fault. It doesn’t matter who you were or who you are, only you can stop it.”
And as Kron began to slip on the mask, he choked out, “Only you can stop Majora.”
Once the mask was on, Kron let go of the sword, and its droning ended. The flesh on his right arm was not even remotely healed. A low laughing began to emerge from Kron as his body started to
Contort in a way that was inhuman. His head began to spin-literally. His arm moved into an incomprehensible position and his bones cracked. He started floating in the air.
Teba flew onto the deck and Riju, Sidon, and Yunobo came up from the lower deck. Teba looked at Link with wide eyes. “Link! What the hell happened?!”
Yunobo looked straight up and started trembling in fear. “Uhhhh is that normal?”
Sidon caught the sight and his face fell. “No, I don’t…particularly think it is.”
Link closed his eyes as Riju poked him, asking simply, “What are you going to do?”
He grinned. “I’m going to get to the bottom of this.”
A wind pushed him upwards, soaring him into the airs as he deployed his glider and came face to face with the floating Kron with the red energy. The man with the mask. Link was ready to fire an arrow straight into the Mask’s eye.
But then it looked straight at him. And Link felt the whole world stand still, and his heart go cold.
The mask almost grinned and it spoke in a dark and eerie tone. “I know who you are.”
Link’s eyes immediately went wide as he fell back onto the ship’s deck and started to writhe with agony. All outside noises left his mind as images began to fill his very soul.
“Alright Link, here’s how you make this dish. Are you watching?”
“Mhm!”
“We have some news for you Link. You are going to have a little baby sister!”
“That’s right, son. Her name is Aryll.”
“Hey sis.”
“Hey Link. How are you doing?”
“…Okay. Dad says we are leaving Terminus soon.”
“ WHAT IS THAT THING?! ”
“Oh my gods. It’s the Calamity! Everyone run!”
“Link, get your sister out of there. Rune, protect them with your life. I’ll cover you.”
“ WAIT, IT SHOULD BE ME!
“ MOM, NO! ”
“Goodbye.”
“Link!”
“ Link!”
“LINK!”
Link’s eyes went wide as he finally began to stir. He immediately saw Riju right standing right besides him.
“Wake up! This guy is kicking our asses!”
Link looked around and immediately saw fire rage around him. The boat was in flames. He looked up and saw this…Majora thing firing blasts everywhere. He said no words, made no noises. Just kept moving in incomprehensible ways, doing incomprehensible things.
He saw Teba in the skies, Sidon in the water, and Yunobo trying to hit him as hard as he could. Nothing was working. Link let out a groan. “Riju…do I still have any ancient arrows on me?”
Riju looked at Link’s back and grinned. “You do! Be careful though, that was a long fall!”
Link pulled out the arrow and drew it against his bow, pointing it right at Majora. “I’ll take my chances.
I just hope this guy dies.”
Link fired the arrow right at the monster, and it connected…
And nothing happened for a moment.
It was like time itself had stopped. Then…
The mask fell from Kron’s face and both it and Kron fell to the ground with a resounding crash.
Everyone on the boat breathed a sigh of relief. Then they all turned to Link.
Yunobo spoke first. “So…what now?”
“Now?
Uh.
Grab a crate or something to hold that mask. I don’t think anyone should touch it. Teba, see if you can find out where the other Yiga went, and carry Kron’s body with you while you’re at it.
Sidon…take Riju, Yunobo, and…me with you.”
Link’s eyes started to flicker. “I’m…going to go to sleep now.”
With that, Link passed out.
Not knowing that would be the last good night’s sleep he will get in a while.
